Jackets to go with dresses

What are the options? I’ve a few lovely warmer midi-maxi length dresses that I love to wear with biker boots and my usual coat is a parka of some kind and it just looks scruffy. I am seeing a lot of short jackets, are they warm though? Thanks

Of course a jacket can be warm! It depends on how warm you want it to be and what it’s made from (apologies but this does seem like stating the obvious). Wool, fleece, denim, leather, even polyester, er whatever you like.

Do you not own a jacket? Any jacket??!!

Here’s what you need to do. Go onto Vinted and search by size and material - cord, wool, tweed, leather etc for this time of year. Buy some and try them out, re-Vint if necessary. You can then invest when you find the shapes and styles that work for you.

I’ve got a real weakness for jackets, I absolutely love them, especially with dresses and skirts. I find a fitted, cropped style works best. I must have at least 10 or 12, all of which get worn. So much better than a scruffy parka - save that for dog walks!

I'm a jacket addict, I have loads.
My favourite at the moment is a faux leather biker jacket (River Island £59) I dress it down with jeans, trainers and a white t-shirt, wear it over a dress, plan on wearing it with jeans, boots and a chunky jumper when the weather turns, I'll also wear it with a long scarf.
I'm also loving the aviator type jackets with fur on them

I love jackets and dresses too.. I love dresses because I am short and don’t get “broken up” as with separates.
I think there is not “one” jacket that fits with all dresses … it depends dress length and shape.
Generally my rule with clothes is to mix it up.. so leather biker with feminine dress, more structured with informal dress.
Go to shop with a couple different dresses and try some on.. even if you search on vinted later 😙

No I don’t own jackets, I own coats and parkas and coats that cover my bum/are long but I’ve never had the confidence for short coats which is what I consider a jacket to be 🤷‍♀️ I do quite like this as I wondered if it would look nice with long flowy dresses?

@MiniCoopers Biker jacket style usually works well. Lots of tweed jackets cut traditionally around too. Make sure it goes with the dress! Or just a full length warm coat. I’ve seen plenty of double faced wool coats being worn in London already. Just open and swishy if you don’t want belted.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/09/2025 19:10

Sorry @MiniCoopers but I’m really not a fan of that jacket. At all. I’m gobsmacked that it’s allegedly the M&S 2nd best selling jacket. 😖

Can you give an indication / photo / link of the sort of dresses you’re looking to wear a jacket with and then maybe we can suggest something?

Have a look at Arket and Cos as they do reasonably well made stylish jackets (although they’ll cost you more than the ‘cow jacket’) and see if there’s any style that appeals.

pinkpony88 · 25/09/2025 19:12

I wear my leather jacket a lot with that type of outfit.

OhDear111 · 25/09/2025 19:30

I saw that cow jacket. Not a fan - they’ve got a navy blue wool (partly wool) trucker jacket that’s absolutely great for the money. A great suede biker jacket in a light camel too. Would go with anything. So would their trench coat and any Barbour style country jacket. M&S have a look alike green one. It’s very good for the autumn.

WineOfYourFiveADay · 25/09/2025 19:49

I’m always a fan of a good trench coat. Simple, elegant, and flattering.

You could go with something classic like this one:

or, a fancy version like this? (dreaming of someone buying me this 🤣)

I love jackets and how they can enhance any outfit I wear. I usually wear a red leather jacket over a dress, which I bought from brownleatherjacket.co.uk/ at a budget price.
