Looking to buy an investment wool coat, only problems are, need petite fit and looking for something different but timeliness. Budget £300, may go more ‘the one’.

Lets try this again…

If I were looking for myself, I’d probably try on a few max Mara ones in store to figure out which size and style suit me best, and then get a good condition one off of Vinted. They’re the gold standard for investment wool coats. My mum has a few that I’m always trying to pinch. I bought one on sale last year because I desperately wanted one of my own, and because the price was so good. However, I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that it was too small for me and that I probably wouldn’t shrink two sizes anytime soon, which is when I tried to sell it and found out that you can actually get ones in great condition for a fraction of retail price.

Just keep in mind that (a) it’s Italian sizing, so allow for at least one if not two sizes larger than your usual, and (b) there are multiple sub-brands such as weekend, sport, studio, etc. and multiple models within each of those brands. So make sure you know exactly what you’re buying!

And if you do want a new one and can wait until Xmas/new year sales, John Lewis are bound to have some - i think they mostly stick to the weekend line, but finding one around £300 at that time of year (especially in a petite size) is very much in the realm of possibilities, although not guaranteed. There always seems to be better stock and discounts in-store than online.

I actually had to size down in my Max Mara coat (S Max Mara) I bought it in the Netherlands & with tax back it ended up costing around £750. It’s the best thing I’ve ever bought.

however, with a smaller budget I’d look at brands such as Jaeger, Fairfax & Favour. A lot of people also like Cos & I like their quality but I’m small shouldered & find everything oversized.

The charity shops are filling up with coats including wool and so keep an eye out. I am petite too and got a 100% wool coat for less than ten pound last year from a good brand. It might be worth considering. Just the other day there was a wool coat by Austin Reed for less than £30 and it was in perfect condition.

Another vote for Hobbs. They have a great range of petite wool coats. I have a navy Tilda coat, which fits like a dream I think the updated version is called the Cavendish.

I've been on the hunt for a 100% wool coat for a while, and am 5'4'' and a size 6, so hopefully this is helpful. Check out Vinted for deals too, although you have to be quick (the Jigsaw coat in black size 6 sold yesterday within 3 hours). It's amazing to me how difficult finding a 100% wool coat has become, even when brands advertise as "wool"! Reiss is really bad for this IMO.

Jigsaw Maxi City Coat - https://www.jigsaw-online.com/products/wool-maxi-city-coat-taupe

Jaeger Long Boyfriend Coat - https://www.marksandspencer.com/long-boyfriend-coat/p/clp60744117?color=BLACK -- beautiful coat, but the sleeves were slightly too oversized for me

Hobbs Iona Wool Coat - https://www.hobbs.com/product/iona-wool-coat/0225-3256-1049L00-MALBEC-PURPLE - their Cavendish coat always strikes me as very old fashioned but their princess coats are gorg

Walker Slater Wool Coat - https://www.walkerslater.com/virginia-coat-shetland-donegal-navy - great quality, above your budget, but slim fit (so will suit a petite figure), you can try on in store, and very well made

I had my eyes on the Hobbs Livia coat in the first post, tried it on in John Lewis and had to discard it due to its weight. Just be aware that even the petite one is huge and quite heavy. Try the tilda/cavendish range that PP mentioned. I can't afford one now and talked myself out of needing a fancy wool coat, but found a brilliant wool coat in Brighton for 20 quid so do try the charity shops in posh areas.

I was going to suggest the precise same thing, getting a Max Mara on Vinted.
