Proper waterproof coat

Havesomecommonsense · 14/09/2025 13:43

I'm about to start walking to work very regularly and I live in a bit of a rainy place. I need a lightweight but waterproof coat. It should be thin and not too hot because of perimenopause! I've currently got a pac a mac type but it's only really showerproof not waterproof.
I find things like the Rains coats too bulky and hot and sweaty
Any recommendations?

Mountain Warehouse. Just bought one today but it's warmer than you need. Lots of options there though

Seasalt or lighthouse

I've just got mine from Passenger and love it. It rained everyday in our recent holiday and I was lovely and dry.

Uniqlo

For just waterproof, I like my berghaus one. It’s relatively long (ie covers my bum) and the fabric isn’t crackly. I got larger than needed so I can fit lots of jumpers under it.
Mountain warehouse ones also good. Look for at least 10,000mm hydrostatic head for proper weather proof ness.

Womens Waterproof Jackets & Coats | Raincoats | Berghaus, @Havesomecommonsense
Women's Deluge Pro 3.0 Waterproof Jacket - Black | Berghaus

I have one and it can cope with torrential rain.

(The downside is that it doesn't cover much of my legs)

I have 2 waterproof jackets from Didriksons, well worth the money

Bitzee · 14/09/2025 19:50

My raincoat is Protected Species and it’s great- definitely waterproof, not hot and looks decent. The kids have mountain warehouse which definitely do the job but they aren’t very stylish and feel quite plasticky, I wouldn’t fancy one myself.

Can I ask which waterproof jacket you chose in the end. I need to chose one! Too much choice.

M&S do waterproof coats that are light and long and have a hood. You can put a gilet on underneath if it’s cold.
They are €140. Less in £.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 05/02/2026 18:08

Didriksons. I've got one that I've had for about 5 years, it's worn really well, washes well and doesn't give you that steam room feeling when you're wearing it!

There is no definitive jacket/coat

I live rural, Northern Ireland , we have wind and rain constantly. Right now the winf=d and rain is so fierce I cant open the back door

So I have loads of coats and jackets for wet / windy weather. Not cold today do a long length waterproof coat with hood and fixed cape - its lashing and the wind is fierce

Tomorrow maybe as wet , but warm and no wind so I will go out in my usual jumper, jacket and stick on a pac a Mac

But Im not looking to look stylish and on trend, Im looking to stay dry

Only you know how much style over substance you can live with

Myself, I want to stay dry and as warm as possible. Outer clothes get removed once inside

I would recommend North Face or 66 North
