Desperate to find mother of the groom clothes

My eldest son gets married in March next year and I’m really excited about it. It’s going to be a small wedding (around 50 people) and the event is taking place at the same venue (ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations).

But I am getting quite stressed! I really don’t know what to wear! The mother of the bride has copied my son’s suit colours and will look elegant in a velvet sheath dress. Meanwhile I am totally clueless. Help!!!
I’m 5’6”, a slim mid fifties woman with shoulder length hair, size 12. I have no cleavage 🙈, need to cover my upper arms and, even though I’m slim (no love handles etc), I have a lower tummy bump that won’t go away - honestly I’ve dieted, exercised (run regularly) but I’m stuck with it after four children. I am told that I suit “warm” colours (smoky tints), not pastels at all.
The wedding party and flowers are faun, cream, burgundy, apricot. We’re eating curry wraps so I don’t want a pale outfit just in case.
I tried this dress

but I was unhappy with the tummy bump in profile. It did cover everything else that I don’t like about me.
I feel like going in a big baggy sack.
What would you suggest?
My absolute limit is £300 as I need to fix up the rest of us with clothes. I don’t mind buying on eBay.

Type in mother of the groom on eBay and loads will come up. Find one you really like ( check you can send it back if you don’t ) then take it too a dressmaker and get it made to fit perfectly.

Little update. I am starting Pilates to attack the bumpy tummy. 7am on a Sunday morning shows some commitment, I think! I was going to get some suck it all in knickers too until I read that about the dreadful wind (omg! which is worse?!). I am going to try the cupping too. Does it squelch as it comes off? I think the best solution would be to remove from the tummy and stick it on the boobs as I couldn’t muster a cleavage if I dragged the flesh round from my back 🙈. I’m an athletic build, except for the tummy thing.
I feel a bit rushed because mob has her dress fixed up and wants to know what I’m wearing. Is that usual?
I’m going to try on lots of different dresses, inspired by what you have sent to me. I love so many of them! Thank you.

I’m not going to panic as 6 months IS a long time. As you say, a whole new range of dresses will be coming in soon.
I will do the JL shopper idea too and send/return stuff. Been looking on eBay. Some gorgeous dresses.

You have loads of time, don’t let her rush you…..take your time

Polyester velvet never looks right.

Wjdbxb · 14/09/2025 20:36

Has anyone suggested Hope and Ivy yet? They have some beautiful dresses that skim the body. I’ve just had a quick look online and they have some lovely dresses marked as coming soon.

My very stylish friend is wearing a dress from One Hundred Stars, some beautiful dresses on their website

No link. Is £300 including shoes and hat?
March is likely to be cold so you will need a coat/tunic/jacket as well.

Shibumi on EBay?

if every thing in same place don’t have to worry about coat I would think and seemingly not church so hat optional. Concentrate on something comfortable that you don’t have to think about choose a colour that suits and maybe get a wrap for extra warmth and to disguise any spill stains.

Catdaysofsummer · 14/09/2025 22:57

Another vote for Phase Eight - they've got nice dresses and usually have different colour versions of this style of dress - elegant and simple!

Why are you looking at dark navy etc if you suit warm tones? Seasonal colour analysis obsessive here, guilty as charged. Cut and shape of course v. important too but if truly want to look your best, go for your best colours.

This is what I'll be going for if / when I need a MOTG/B dress. Haven't bought any yet but saw it recommended on here a while ago and their made to measure crepe dresses are gorgeous. £395 which for the occasion might be manageable.

It says they also do these in jewel toned velvets - would that be something like what you're after?

This is my mother of the groom dress , made by Lipsy.
It was £150 from next , hat was by coast around £30.
Vinted is a very good site to buy almost new too.
Lipsy , coast , phase eight are excellent brands.
I got a dress , hat and bag for my other son's wedding for £30

Whereabouts will the wedding be held? My birthday is early March and the weather can be anything from snow to 20 degrees and sunny (in London). Unless you’re in Scotland, I would want something more versatile than long sleeve velvet.

Hi there.just to say dont panic! My Son got married recently .I had a lovely dress phase eight .I am a bit more bumpy than you I expect.A little jacket does a world of favours I found .coupled with a hat just lifts everything .Have a super time and enjoy clothes shopping!

Sunbeds · 15/09/2025 13:02

The wedding is in Shropshire, so Midlands-ish.
@Colourmylife1 i will give that one a try certainly. I’ve started on Move with Nicole on YouTube - fitting in a 20 minute session in the early morning but guess 20 minute sessions aren’t long enough.
Phase 8 is certainly on my radar now as well. Thanks so much for sharing.

@Sunbedsyou will absolutely see a difference with 20 minute sessions (although maybe not only once a week!) Like you I find it hard to find time to attend in-person classes but it’s so easy to squeeze in a short session at home at a time that suits me. I’m 62 and feel stronger and more flexible than I’ve ever been.
Good luck with the dress shopping and please update when you find your dress!

GimmieABreakOr3 · 15/09/2025 13:13

There are loads on Vinted if you’re open to pre-loved. Search mother of the bride/groom outfits. You can pick up a bargain.

Othewise try John Lewis, jaeger, phase 8, me&em
