ME + EM September ‘look book’

I just got mine in the post today. What a welcome change to see a smiling model on the front cover - so often they look vacant and miserable! I always think - if you can afford to spend that kind of money on clothes life can’t be too bad….so maybe cheer up a bit?! Anyway, this month the cover actually looks cheerful!

Well, if we’re choosing our clothes based on smiley-ness of models, I’m voting for this wonderful Phoebe Philo image that arrived in my inbox yesterday.

I really hate this idea that women have to smile all the time.

I don't think anyone is saying that women have to smile all the time. Not at all. But there is something soulless looking through a catalogue or an online store where the models have that vacant and unhappy look. It's not the models fault, obviously it's the look the brand wants.

Do you believe models who smile for the camera are doing it because they're happy?

I’m not endorsing it as shopping (or life) philosophy, @Floisme.😄 In the past Petar Petrov’s grumpy Don’t give a shit models have been some of my favourites - but this season even they look much more benign.

Maybe it’s a thing, @MakemineaGandT?

What are other people being shown through their inboxes, or wherever?

Good points - exactly that - I’m just wondering whether there’s a conscious effort to show happiness.
@Floisme these are staged model-shots I’m talking about - not women being themselves. Of course women can do whatever they like with their faces! I’m just making the point that there seems to be a conscious effort by the brand/stylists etc to show a more upbeat and happy ‘look’. Which is welcome in my world as it’s much more enjoyable to see happy people than miserable ones….
