Having recently re discovered my past love of alternative clothing, due to weight loss ,I thought I'd see if there was a thread about what we are wearing/ buying.
But couldn't see one ..
So here's one to chat on

Have recently discovered disturbia on vinted ,and that's given me lots of ideas .
At 52 ,I feel the need to tone it down slightly..so but maybe e that will go as I get in to my stride clothes wise
I've needed to buy a whole new wardrobe after dropping 8 stone ,but I've more still to loose ,so need to plan my wardrobe carefully, and not spend to much in one go

I have a few bits from Killstar - a skirt which I love and wear a lot, a few tops and a really cute nightie 😆
My hair is currently purple - it's been all sorts of bright colours but as I approach 50 I feel more comfortable with darker, not so "out there" colours.
I am however the opposite to you and have gained weight recently so my current clothes don't look great - I am reluctant to buy new as I am hoping to lose the weight again!

Silverbirchleaf · 11/09/2025 07:05

Dropping eight stone. Well done you!

I had a style analysis done a few years ago. Part of the process was to identify your ‘personality’ and I came out partly boho (I had a couple of ‘looks’). It made me confident in wearing what I wanted, rather than what I felt I should. I haven’t gone fully fledged hippy, but maybe will wear a boho top with jeans, for example, so take elements of the look.

Enjoy embracing who you are.

I have to say at almost fifty too, I’ve had to re-evaluate the alternative-ness slightly…. It’s not because I don’t like the style, but because I find so many of the clothes are badly and cheaply made - which was fine when I was a young teenage rock chick, but not so great in business meetings now!

That said, when I do splash out on something that’s a statement piece of decent alternative clothing, I will shop at Other, P &Co, or Mikuta . Just bought this gorgeous embroidered boiler suit from P&Co this week, and that’s been ticking ALL my boxes for office to evening wear with some big chunky boots, and a gorgeous silver cuff from Mikuta.

I am not as alternative as my teenage years but I do still love a nod to my rocker youth. I still love a leather jacket!

I've bought a pair of chunky Doc Marten shoes for this autumn which I'm enjoying. Like you, I've also lost weight (4 stone) so a huge congratulations on your weight loss! 8st is a massive achievement.

I've got another half a stone or so to hit my goal weight and then I'm planning a new tattoo as a well done. I've wanted another one for years and years but just need to decide on placement. I know I want something celestial with a nod to my two DDs.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/09/2025 08:03

Almost all my clothes are from Disturbia, Hell Bunny and Killstar. I mix them in with Uniqlo and Hush basics. Everything is black, with bits of dark green or purple. Usually I wear DMs or New Rocks but I think the New Rocks exacerbate my bad knee so they might get retired.
I'm after filling the rest of my arm tattoo in before Xmas. Got my eye on a lovely dress from Hell Bunny too.

Usually I do rainbow hair ,so purple, blue ,pink yellow orange .
I use directions pots of Amazon at £6 spot and just start at the top doing pat he's of each colour..it looks amazing when the colours over lap as they mix

I've not really gone boho myself.. wouldn't know where to start with that one .
I went through a ska / madness phase ,and pixie girl looks and a goth and punk style .
At one point I had nose Piercing and lots of earrings in ,all up one ear ,but the whole ear swelled up ,and the doctor couldn't get them out and I had to have numbing cream to get them out ..turns out I was allergic to the metal ..was so painful ..put me off having more done

Yes it does make you re think at 50 .
I've really struggled with the feeling of what I want to wear , against how I feel a 50 plus woman should look .
Like my hair is very long ..so I can do lots different colours on it ..but then I got it in my head that I was to old and had it chopped of late 40s ...hated it..felt like half my personality was gone without my hair ..so I grew it back

I absolutely love the lace look tattoos...I'd adore one on the front of my neck .
I've currently got stars on the side of my neck that I want to cover up ,with a more goth design.
Well done you on your weight loss ..it really gives you a boost doesn't it 😍

I’m 60 soon, I’ve got three tattoos planned for Dec/jan when I probably won’t be swimming every day

I'm currently coming in at a size 22 / 20 ..so not a lot in my size ..but I'm getting inspired and managing to find bits elsewhere similar
So I've just ordered 3 dresses ,a black lace one a brown checked one and I've seen a green checked one I'm after ,but I can't remember where I saw it .
I've ordered a black lace cardigan..very thin lace and I'm going to wear it over my skull t shirts with black jeans ..I've got the DMS Miley Cyrus wore in her wrecking ball video, and the half way up your leg black ones with roses embroidered up the side

One is a tribute to the many cats that I have rescued and looked after, the other two are quotes from a song that resonates with me

Well done on swimming every day 😊

Autumnleaves73 · 11/09/2025 10:55

I'm so chuffed to of found people to chat to about this ..
I adore clothes and style ,but never fitted in on the threads about it ..
I've changed style a lot through out my life
I think that's due to my autism diagnosis, and I'm getting assessed for ADHD later this year ..always trying to reinvent myself 😉

hey! Im very similar, 52 and lost 7st (aiming for one more but its resisting all my current efforts!).😁
I probably dress more alt now then at any other age, probably because I just dont care what people think anymore.

I love Disturbia and have lots of their skater dresses (Im also a sucker for anything embroidered and they have some gorgeous pieces).
I do have some Killstar and Hellbunny bits but they are often abit too 'out there' for me.
I also love a vintage dress from Joanie or a pair of dungarees from Lucy & Yak, anything with a mad print or fun colour will do. TBF though where I live anybody not wearing leggings and a puffer gilet could be seen as dressing 'alternative'! LOL😂

AgathaX · 11/09/2025 12:06

What's the sizing like for Disturbia?

henlake7 · 11/09/2025 12:16

I find Disturbia either runs big or to size. Luckily they usually have tons of reviews for most things which tell you how the sizings are.
Im normally a 10 but I usually buy the dresses in an 8 and still have plenty of room.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/09/2025 12:29

I'm a 12 and that's what I buy in Disturbia. Sometimes things are a little bit big.

I'm early 40s so perimenopause is making me reconsider some of the things I've been wearing as I am losing my flat stomach 😭 but I've been veering to wide leg trousers for some years rather than skinny jeans. I've got a lot of Disturbia trousers that I wear for work.

Doggymummar · 11/09/2025 12:35

I bought a few things from here last night https://www.whatnot.com/user/hannahrye?app=android&sender_id=16418757&sharing_channel=copyLink

KurtCobainLover · 11/09/2025 12:40

I’m approaching 50 and have luminous green hair chopped into a mullet and more tattoos than I have blank skin.

I buy a lot from Thunderegg and tend to go for brighter colours although some days I’ll be in all black disturbia clothes.

Autumnleaves73 · 14/09/2025 05:55

I've bought a few coats of vintage, but not as alternative as disturbia or similar.im currently fitting in a 20/22 so haven't found anything in those brands in my size , despite a lot of looking .
Also I don't have the confidence I had when younger ,to pull it off .even if I could find anything in my size
I've got a lovely brand new kill star checked bag with studs on ( from years ago ),and 3 pairs of DMS ,and a religion t shirt on the way and a couple of checked dresses ..but no jumpers for winter autumn..can't find find anything in my size that's just a touch alternative..

You sound quite similar to me! I love all those things you've mentioned. I think my style leans towards dark boho/whimsy-goth. I have some bits from Disturbia and Hellbunny. I love velvet and cord, and natural fabrics. Wide legged trousers and maxi skirts, with chunky boots. Lot of rings and bangles.

I'm glad I found this thread, as I was thinking of starting my own. I'm intetested in people who still like the style of their youth, sometimes a slightly more grown-up version (or not!). I love trying to spot grown-up goths when out and about. Sometimes a toned down version... They always look fab. I re-discovered my old style after having my 4 babies. I've lost a bit of weight since then too (nothing major, size 18 to size 14 now), so partly that, but partly finding myself again after the mists of baby-dom.

Great thread! Op, you're going to have so much fun with clothes on your weight loss journey. 8 stone is epic... Well done you! And hello from a fellow autie!
