Help! Skirt styles for 2025..

Showed my teenage daughter some skirts that I’d liked on Vinted and her response was ‘nice but very 2000s’. I’ve lost a bit of weight and seem to have unknowingly returned to exactly the style I was wearing when I was that size last…
What style in skirts is a bit more now but would work on a short, size 14 50+ lady.
She did say that I should just wear what makes me happy but I’m not sure what that is any more.

I love some of those Meandem ones but I’m short and they’re a bit out of my price range - maybe I’ll see if there are some cheaper versions of the style. Thanks all - I’m definitely inspired to look around and try some new styles on.

To be clear, I wasn't specifically recommending any of the Me and Em skirts - they're far too expensive for me these days - but I posted the link because I think they're good at taking hold of a trend and doing a grown up 'spin' on it.

I have a couple of skirts from the 90s/early noughties (Next and Aquascutum) that look very similar to that pleated check one and that are also 100% wool and fully lined. So, if you like it, I think it's worth checking out all your usual second hand sources

BettyTurpinPies · 07/09/2025 19:13

Me too, @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle , especially the Edina and the kilts.

Rina66 · 07/09/2025 20:15

I was looking for a faux suede midi skirt that I’d seen in Sainsbury’s. I went on to the Tu website, clicked on the skirt link, well there is every style of skirt imaginable - short, midi, maxi denim, cord, tiered, metallic, knitted, A line, straight, bias cut, patterned - every single style except the suede one I want!

In theory I like the look of these wool knee length skirts from Boden (nice to see some wool content) but in practice they just look a bit wrong somehow - is it the length, or the shape?

www.boden.com/products/helen-wool-kilt-skirt-purple-herringbone

The purple and blue ones hang oddly across the front and the back. Maybe skimped too much on fabric?

I had a camel coloured M & S wool skirt like these in the mid 70s, with a metal buckle over the kilt effect side. I loved that skirt. I think it flared more and did not pull across the front and back, like these appear to,

MagdaLenor · 09/09/2025 08:28

If a model can't make it look good, that's a problem. £139 for a skirt that doesn't hang properly?

chattychatchatty · 09/09/2025 10:37

@Newmeagain the Boden skirts are too wide to be a neat pencil, they look odd being part pleated, plus the hips seem to curve out too low down on the model’s body.
Right now the only thing that looks out of style is knee length (or just above or below) A line; straight or flared minis are good as are any kind of maxi or midi, as far as I can tell. I like a skirt I can walk properly in, the straight midis don’t work for me.

BettyTurpinPies · 09/09/2025 10:45

I used to wear straight midis in the early 2000s. Friends told me they were frumpy.

@chattychatchatty , the Boden skirt isn't meant to be a pencil skirt. It's not narrow and it has pleats.

User1876056 · 09/09/2025 13:22

Regarding see through skirts/ dresses, I would highly recommend using an underskirt/slip.
I bought a twin pack (one black, one nude, just above knee length) from M&S some years ago, and they have lasted brilliantly and mean I can buy whatever I like without worrying!
I think they also make things hang better.

Pencil skirts apparently are the new thing! Ankle length, or knee length. My information is from this month's Stylist magazine.

Ankle length pencil skirts? How are you supposed to walk in that! 😂

BettyTurpinPies · 09/09/2025 13:26

Waist Slips at M&S
There's no way I'd wear a see-through skirt without a slip.

I like the green one! I’m having the same problem as I haven’t worn skirts in a while (I prefer dresses) and I don’t want to wear trousers all the time.

I wouldn’t worry about what’s in fashion. Go for a classic style that flatters you.
If you have good legs, I would go for a short pleated wool skirt to wear with knee length boots. If not, midi’s look great with knee length boots in the winter - you could go for anything flowing in a nice fabric. https://www.johnlewis.com/l-k-bennett-halina-tailored-skirt-black/p112705258

Anything plain really. I like just above th eknee skirts with black tights and boots or loafers or long skirts with ballet flats or boots.

If you like patterns go for checks, not flowers.

Someone linked an article yesterday that went through about 10 skirt trends. I can't find it now but, from memory, it included kilts - especially mini and knee length - pencil, A Line, and voluminous midis (New Look style). I was surprised at how interesting they looked given that none of them were exactly original and I immediately wanted at least half of them (I think I might be over trousers for the time being!). Anyway if I find that article I'll come back and post it.

I got a kilt as a Christmas gift last year before they hit the high street - I love it!

BettyTurpinPies · 09/09/2025 15:45

I've always worn kilts and get some nice comments.

Summerhillsquare · 09/09/2025 20:02

at least 40 pencil skirts alone on H&M website, so gazillions to choose from. I have this and although unlined it hangs rather nicely and is flattering on the tummy: https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1303959003.html

Hdpr · 09/09/2025 20:28

Has anyone seen long black skirts to wear with chunky jumpers? Ideally with some wool content

it's the stupid price?

BettyTurpinPies · 09/09/2025 22:06

The price isn't stupid, but in the photo it looks like a cheaper skirt. For that price I'd want something more kilt-like. Ladies’ Mini Kilt – Strathmore Woollen Company
I quite like it, but I quite like this too. Buy Burgundy Corduroy A-Line Mini Skirt 8 | Skirts | Tu.

I added the Tu link because I have a tartan A-line short skirt from Tu from 10+ years ago and it gets dragged out every winter. It's bright and cheerful, perfect for just before Christmas.

unsevered67 · 09/09/2025 23:56

@Hdpr
sezane have nice ribbed woolen skirts . This pic looks like a dress but it’s a matching skirt and jumper https://www.sezane.com/en-en/product/naelle-skirt/black#size-xs

Patterned skirts from that era did look dated this summer. I'm hoping I'll be able to carry it off for winter. I've got two that I absolutely love and have re-bought the coordinating jumper/cardigan from Vinted as I've worn my originals out. I think if I swap from shoes to boots I might be ok.

I've got a couple of those skirts. I bought them on eBay but haven't worn them yet because of the 'dated' thing. Thanks for the jumper and boots idea! I love skirts, thick tights and boots in the winter and find them warmer and more comfortable than trousers.

cumbriaisbest · 09/09/2025 21:01

it's the stupid price?

Yes - and the fact that it doesn't seem to hang right in any of the photos!
