Socks and loafers for a millennial?

It's so deeply ingrained in me to wear invisible socks that I have dismissed the trend for mid-calf socks everywhere as a younger woman's game that I would look silly trying to pull off. I'm 42, and grew up in the era when you couldn't have even a whisper of sock showing over your trainers.

But I bought some platform loafers (Fitflop, soft leather, very 90s coded) and it's so much more comfortable to wear them with socks. It's so nice not to have the edge of the shoe rubbing bare skin!

My style is I guess kind of boho and arty; I'm wearing the loafers with a dark green tiered tulle maxi skirt and ribbed jumper, or a patterned floaty dress with biker jacket or a gothy silky midi dress with a pale pink flower print and black velvet trim. I can't decide if I should try the loafers with white socks, or maybe sheer black socks (do they stay up though?) or stick to what feels like safe and familiar ground and carry on with my trusty invisible liners and bare ankles. Any tips?

I’m the same age as you and I’ve fully embraced the socks over the last couple of years! I don’t wear white ones much though, I prefer darker colours. I’ve got burgundy, dark green and navy that get worn a lot. I get socks with no elastic at the top or lettuce top socks. I also don’t pull them up mid calf, just cover my ankles.
Your style sounds like you can easily pull off some cool socks!

Ooh I love the sound of burgundy! Ok, I will give it a go and hope Gen Zers don't laugh at me in the street.

I'm 66. I wear ankle socks with flat ballet pumps and skirts and dresses when it's too warm to wear tights. I wear white, coloured or patterened depending on what matches or contrasts with what I'm wearing.

I don't own loafers as they're not my thing but if they were I wouldn't think twice about wearing loafers and socks.

I’m a sock lover and I wear Cos lurex socks with chunky sandals, trainers and Bass Weejun loafers. Wear what you like when you like. It’s no one else’s business!

Get yourself some lovely coloured or patterned socks to match outfits. I think its a good look.
(Gen X here, I actually missed the whole invisible sock trend....never left my scrunchy socks!!LOL).

It was never a look that looked good to me. It was just about ok in summer but even then it looked uncomfortable [bare ankles chafing on the trainers] and in cold weather , chilled blue and purple ankles just looked daft.

If you're uncomfortable with loafers with socks then go old fashioned and wear tights / stockings / pop socks. Solves the shoe rubbing on bare feet issue but retains the look of bare feet. Horrifies millenials of course.
