Crop top – converting to regular length?

Hi, does anyone have any experience of a dress maker being able to add fabric to a crop top to make it full length?

I’m absolutely in love with everything about this top, apart from the fact that it’s cropped. Otherwise the shape and colour are perfect.

I’m thinking if I bought the skirt for extra material, are there any possible solutions to this? Thoughts appreciated!

I’ve ordered it and I’m going to take a look at the hem to see if anything can be done.

As an amateur but competent sewist, i wouldn't want to go near that😬

It has lines down the front which means that it has been sewn there using darts and will probably be lined.

That means that i'd expect to have to

  1. seperate the inside lining and outside
  2. decide whether to replicate the darts by sewing a few pieces together to continue the line or just create a single panel. If replicating darts, will need to line them up precisely.
  3. The description says it has buttons at the back so will need to match them and add buttonholes.
  4. You'd need to turn it back the right way, press, and hand sew the lining and outside together again.

Added complications is it says its lyocell which can add stretch but it looks quite structured so you'll need to find the right machine settings.

Sorry! It can be done though. And if you do, I'd love to see how you get on!
An alternative could be to add a peplum m, lace or a ruffle which would be much, much easier.

I think you would ruin the line of you try to add something to it. How about high waisted skirt/trousers to close the gap a bit?

Thanks so much for these replies. @SaladAndChipsForTea I appreciate all these points. It’s so helpful and illustrate that it’s not straightforward at all.

@Tinytigertail I’ve ordered the matching skirt, which looks like it could be worn quite high on the waist, so I will assess the gap when I have both.

There are so few things that I actually like in the shops at the moment, I was quite excited to find something that could potentially fit the bill with a few adjustments. I really don’t want to create a headache though.

Thanks again.

Can you add a fringe or lace onto the bottom?

Blaze3 · 05/09/2025 01:47

You could wear a body suit underneath to give you coverage but keep the look..?
