i need a black jacket for autumn/winter and think I’ve fallen in love with this…

but I’m worried the style of it will date quickly?

Also my shoulders are wider than my hips so I’m concerned I’ll look like an upside down triangle.

Thoughts? Is it lovely?

Leather Relaxed Harrington Jacket | Autograph | M&S

This Harrington jacket from our Autograph collection makes for a versatile piece. It's crafted in a comfy relaxed fit from pure leather to create a premium feel. For a neat aesthetic, its collar leads to a popper and zip-through fastening. The two side...

It looks dated to me already tbh, I’m really surprised this is a new season jacket!

Stichintime · 29/08/2025 11:44

I think the collar makes it look dated.

EscapadeVelocity · 29/08/2025 11:48

Harrington jackets have been around since time immemorial:

so they’re never in or out of fashion. If M&S have invested in a leather version you can definitely assume the shape will be pretty mainstream this season.

It’s a good price for leather.

I couldn’t wear one - I’d look like a small, elderly bank robber panting towards the getaway car - but if it looks good in your mirror and the lining is decent; why not?

honestly, I’d be a bit careful with this one, those little shoulder details (epaulettes?) plus the cut can make shoulders look even broader. I’ve got wide shoulders too and know the struggle 😅 Sometimes it works out great, sometimes it just makes you feel boxy. Best thing is to try it on, because every jacket hangs so differently in real life.

Britpopbaby · 29/08/2025 13:22

I think it would be looking at going down the preloved route for a leather jacket.

GanninHyem · 29/08/2025 14:03

Looks like my dad's leather jacket from the 90s that stunk to high heaven (of leather the smell is just rank)

sundayfundayclub · 29/08/2025 14:06

This style is back but I have never loved it

Crojo · 29/08/2025 14:53

I agree with the PP who said about the shoulder detail. I’m broad shouldered too and any shoulder details will add bulk making you look even more upside down triangle shaped. It might be fine but I think you need to try one on

ChelseaDetective · 29/08/2025 15:05

I’ve got broad shoulders and I wouldn’t consider that. Especially if it would be long on you, it looks quite long on the model. The epaulettes and the ribbing are not features I like or think would work for me but I’m not you, obviously.

Its M&S so why not just try it on and see if you still love it?

FatAmy123 · 29/08/2025 15:29

Elderly bank robber killed me @EscapadeVelocity😂😂😂😂

i think it’s the dad in the 80s/90s look that I’m attracted too! 😂 I’ve got a thing about clothes with an essence of what my parents used to wear when I was little!

i do think my shoulders could be a problem in this shape though

OP posts:
EscapadeVelocity · 29/08/2025 15:37

Happy to have entertained, @FatAmy123. But, honestly, as someone obsessed with clothes I don’t think I’ve ever once in my life looked at someone and thought Oh look, there’s an upside down triangle!

If someone is particularly well dressed I’ll probably notice; if they’re so badly dressed (odorous / unkempt) as to be completely out of place that also might be noticeable; someone wearing a jacket that makes their shoulders wide - I’d only notice if the jacket was remarkable. Your shoulders simply wouldn’t register.

coronafiona · 29/08/2025 15:49

It would be great if you are a chain smoking hardened detective with a challenging personal life trying to solve a murder than was intextricably linked to your own life, yet your bosses at the police have no issues with a conflict of interest. And you were being filmed for channel 5.

FatAmy123 · 29/08/2025 15:53

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 @coronafionathat is excellent!
It certainly has an essence of Minder about it!!

Yep. Except my dad's was brown rather than black

Neveranynamesleft · 29/08/2025 16:10

I dont like it either, much nicer styles out there. Maybe check Vinted.

ChelseaDetective · 29/08/2025 17:52

I just got back from Big Tesco, where I saw three women wearing jackets like this, and its still quite warm out. They must be going to be a massive trend for Winter.

EscapadeVelocity · 29/08/2025 17:56

I guess they’re quite roomy in the front ….

Wink
IDontHateRainbows · 29/08/2025 18:16

It's lovely but my fear is that it would have quite a short wearing season, by late nov for example would it be enough? And its quite expensive if you can't wear it all through winter.
Maybe that doesn't matter to you, I don't know your finances. But it would put me off.

That’s not as clever as you think it is.
