Burgundy shirts for corporate work environment

SocksNStuff · 27/08/2025 08:08

Hi,

I wondered if I could ask for a bit of advice?

My DH works in a big corporate company at higher professional level. Neither of us has any clue about clothes.

He normally wears burgundy shirts with burgundy buttons, and navy shirts with navy buttons.

The clothes in the wardrobe have suddenly all got musty smelling and I can't sort out the smell.

I managed to buy new navy shirts, but I can't find nice burgundy shirts with burgundy buttons anywhere. All the burgundy shirts have white buttons.

I did buy some from a company called Uneek, but they are not nice quality and I can't send him to work in them really.

I wondered if you might know of any kind of posh shops which would make nice burgundy shirts like this? I only know about places like Next and M&S and they just don't have the right thing. They used to always have them.

I looked in the fancy gents tailor in town and their shirts are £200 which is a bit steep. We could manage £50.

The dry cleaner said I should hang the clothes in the sun to get rid of the musty smell but I will need to wait until next year for that now.

Thanks!

@KateMiskin That's okay. That's the good option.

I'm considering a career as a police sniffer dog. I hear the money is good.

I'm also cursed with a very highly tuned sense of smell, and also put something away in the wardrobe when it was slightly damp, which then made a pair of leather shoes go mouldy. In the end leaving the wardrobe doors open has sorted it. I still make sure at least every couple of days I leave one of the doors open.

SocksNStuff · 18/09/2025 15:02

@GwendolineWindowlene Thanks so much for posting it. That's massively encouraging to hear. Maybe I should just keep doing that every day. I will try that.

I was thinking I could try the dettol again on the uniforms. They are not dry clean only. That way I might be able to sort them out.

I am afraid this thread made me laugh out loud.

Same. Utterly bizarre. Plus I work in tech and cannot imagine anyone wearing a ‘burgundy shirt’ 😐

wwyd2021medicine · 18/09/2025 16:00

Charles tyrwhitt and moss bros do them in burgundy

Totally bizarre, I’ve never read anything like it, reading it makes me wonder if it’s a throw back to times past.

People are being really rude to someone who asked help for solving a problem. If you can’t help, jog on.

SocksNStuff · 18/09/2025 16:56

@Acunningruse Thank you very much, that is really kind.

The easiest way to solve the problem is for her DH to shop for his own clothes and/or go for colours other than the elusive navy and burgundy shirts.

Hello @SocksNStuff , I remember this thread from a while ago, shame you haven't solved the shirt problem.

When my DH was still working - retired now! - I got him a few shirts from Amazon of all places, and they were of surprisingly good quality. I've had a look for you and you can get burgundy/plum but they are white buttons. However they're such a reasonable price I think it's worth a punt to maybe get one or two, see what you think of them, and go back to the idea of having the buttons replaced which some local dressmaker is bound to be willing to do for a few pounds only. Here's the one I looked at but there are others. Best of luck! I totally get it because my DH was also insistent on particular colours. 🙂

You'll be pleased to hear that the Moss Bros shirt was perfect, so we are sorted. Thank you very much for your help. :-)

I am happy to have helped.
I’m glad you’re sorted.
I only googled!

luckylavender · 20/09/2025 16:56

Is there any reason he’s not looking for his own shirts. And why you’d write ‘I can’t send him to work in them really?’ Is he 12?

I am the one that looks at his clothes most so I choose them. I choose nice ones that I will enjoy looking at, and also ones that he will enjoy wearing. I have a good marriage and we are happy. The view is excellent. Thank you for asking.

Good old Moss Bros.
Hope you got the fungus/vodka/ bleach smell out of your long kilt too.

FWIW I'm not that impressed with "Ashford of London". They've asked me to post the shirts to the Netherlands in order to return them, to be done at my own expense through the Royal Mail. The t&c says if there are any customs charges or taxes that I don't arrange to pay upfront through the courier, then there will be no refund.

London my foot.

I would never buy my DHs clothes; his mum does it Grin

SocksNStuff · 22/09/2025 09:33

LOL.

I asked my DH if I could do with better clothes to improve his view and he had good ideas. I also have nice clothes coming in the post now. Black cord bootcut trousers. I really like those. I am looking forward to that now.
