What kind of holiday is it and what is the weather forecast? What have you got already?

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/08/2025 17:44

Is it an activity holiday, a city break or a beach holiday? How much walking will you be doing? And will you have a car? If you'll be travelling by car you can take clothes for all sorts of weather.

In the UK we tend to do walking holidays, so my clothes are geared around that. Plus a couple of outfits for going out or walking round a town/city. I used to be a size 16 and tended to wear walking/hiking clothes then a dress for the evenings with a pair of smart white trainers. Good footwear is everything!

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie it's a week in Yorkshire not sure what the weather will be like. We plan on visiting places like York, Harrogate, Whitby and doing a few low level walks. I've got loads and loads of clothes but unfortunately the majority of them don't fit me. I've slid into leggings and t-shirt land most days 😫

@AnnaQuayInTheUk we will have the car and be driving. Will need new footwear but can't find any that I like 😕

Any idea of temperatures?

I did something similar in Yorkshire at Easter.

Comfortable trainers probably your biggest priority, followed by a lightweight raincoat and some sort of hoodie.

I alternated between jeans, wide legged trousers and sports leggings (the latter for longer walks). I took one dress and one skirt for going out for dinner.

Re jeans - don’t go for long wide legged ones if it’s chucking it down!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2025 21:16

A skirt, top and some sort of jacket/shacket would be perfect for a day in York.

FreezingColdHere · 19/08/2025 21:20

Flipping freezing this week. Seriously thinking about putting the heating on

picks up slightly next week but summer is over I suspect

big jumpers and boots

As PP have said, comfortable walking shoes are the priority. You may find that if you have recently gained weight (which I'm guessing, as your current wardrobe doesn't fit), your feet will not thank you.

I like JD Williams and simply be are good for larger sizing. They have loads of jeans at the moment in short length in your size.

I think you should get:
2-3 pairs of jeans and 4-5 nice tops
A waterproof jacket
skecher trainers or similar for walking
2 nice dresses for the evening.

You can pick up the dresses and jacket very cheaply on vinted if you have time. Boden dresses are great on vinted, as they tend to be well looked after and wash well without shrinking/fading. I'd size up for the jacket, if you have large breasts. Also consider some nice new bras (which you can also buy from vinted if you're not too fussy!)

Have a lovely time. I'd love to visit York.

Just having a look on JD Williams and they have things I like plus a sale on. My main issue is my big overhang that I don't know how to hide it.

You could start in Marks or Next and try lots of pairs of jeans on. My go-to are Marks Harper. They’re rolled up and work with boots, trainers or sandals.

Justanotherdramalama · 20/08/2025 08:40

Morning @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie thanks for your advice will visit m&s and try on a few different styles of jeans. I didn't end up getting anything from JD. I did have a look on very and ordered a few different tops, jeans, hoodie, trainers, dresses and a fake leather jacket. I can always send them back if they aren't suitable for me.

York is compact but deceptively you can end up walking miles so I’d say prioritise comfy footwear and work upwards with a good pair of jeans. Whitby is basically Fat Face type stuff, they’ve currently got a sale on so I’d look there for sweatshirts.
Ive just bought https://www.fatface.com/style/su504476/ak4312#ak4312 this knitted t-shirt, I have a large tummy and bust and try to avoid completely plain tops as I think it just looks like a big expanse whereas a subtle pattern breaks it up a bit.

I have a bit of a tummy to hide at the moment and find a slightly oversized but not too voluminous too works well. I just got this t shirt in the navy colour, it looks good tucked in or out and goes with jeans, denim shorts or wide leg trousers.

I went to that area last August and it was quite cool (and sometimes drizzly). I ended up living in jeans, hoodie and raincoat. Don't think I even wore any dresses, it wasn't warm enough. So I'd suggest you mainly take stuff that you can be warm in!

Justanotherdramalama · 22/08/2025 14:33

Thanks for the links and advice. I usually like my tops to sit at the top of my thighs to hide my stomach and bum. Maybe this is a mistake? I really don't have the confidence to ware tops that sit any higher.
