Retinoid serum recommendations please?

I am using Sunday Riley A+ serum and I really like it - in fact I have great results with several of their products. The A+ is effective and I can see the difference when I use it. It is also mild on the skin and it has never given me any irritation at all.
However it absolutely stinks! I don't mean that it is over-perfumed, it actually smells a bit like baby sick that has been left in the sun. A sort of chemical pungent smell with a good dollop of ammonia or something. I usually put it on my face and neck just before bed, and on the days I don't use it -which is becoming more and more often- I can still smell it on the edge of my duvet cover. And yes, I have tried a fresh bottle etc. It really seems that this is just the way it smells.
Can anyone recommend a really decent retinoid? I am 63 with good, normal, non-sensitive skin (which I put down to not fiddling about with it too much and not plastering it with lots of products!). I don't need something mega strong, but I do want something that actually works and can be used regularly. I am particularly interested in recommendations from people who have used the same product for at least 6 months because it works.

I'm probably dense, but what is retinoid cream and what does it do? Not that I want any, but interested. (Age 61 here and I like nice smelling Neal's yard stuff)

The Youthbomb retinol from Beauty Pie is good, but it’s £44 with a membership or £75 without. It hasn’t got any offensive smell to it.
