Doen dress question

Wiltingasparagusfern · 15/08/2025 10:10

Hello
I really love this dress but am put off by the fact that the lace is nylon (I abhor cheap lace). Does anyone own it or something else by Doen who can tell me a little bit about the quality please? Or does anyone know if net a porter is likely to put it on sale?
Thanks!

Oh my, that’s a lot of nylon!

Pretty much everything on N-a-P ends up on sale, but I wouldn’t buy that under any circumstances. Think of the fire risk.

(I like Doen design, but not the provenance of the clothes.)

Yeah you’re probably right, especially as I occasionally bum a cigarette of I’m at an event and this is very much an event dress. Such a shame as I love the style, just not the fabric

Why not browse Doen’s own website? When I looked this morning the only very similar dress was also nylon - but they have plenty of other lovely dresses.

Some Sister Jane dresses might appeal to you. Not necessarily the short and puffy, but some of the longer, more louche offerings.

I’m familiar with the website, am interested to hear if anyone owns this or something similar in real life! Bit surprised it’s at that price for nylon and made in China maybe.

Not the point, but Doen dresses always make me think of sister wives and trad wife influencers.

I do actually like that dress - but yikes a lot of itchy nylon.

Yeah they are definitely a bit “I homeschool my kids because we don’t believe in dinosaurs”, especially the more milkmaid ones. I think I’m better off looking for something vintage or secondhand that has quality lace. It’s a shame because I love the colour!

They are asking far too much for that dress. No one would ever believe it was an expensive outfit

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/08/2025 10:31

It's photographed very much as though it's a beach cover up. A very sweaty one in nylon!

If it's a long yellow lace dress you want, I've spotted a number of long lace dresses in white cotton. Not expensive, worth a dyeing experiment?

Ruthietuthie · 16/08/2025 14:25

I have an all cotton skirt from Doen, the Sebastiane skirt, which is absolutely beautifully made, with beautiful pleats and lace. I think only the absolutely sheer lace things are made from nylon, and I wouldn't pay that price for something that really is just a beach cover-up.
But the quality of their cotton pieces is worth every penny. I had been searching for a white cotton skirt all summer and ordered SO many, at so many price points, but this was the only one I kept. I wore it all summer either with a little white lace-edged vest top, as they show, but also with a t-shirt and a chambray shirt.

That does look beautifully made. I fear the seam is in the exact place where it would act as a sort of emphasising picture frame for my belly though

It's pretty but it's very see through

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 16/08/2025 17:28

It seems far too expensive for what it is. Too see through for my liking and reminds me of bedding great aunts used to have, along with those knitted toilet roll covers.
The skirt posted looks beautiful though.

Ruthietuthie · 16/08/2025 17:30

@Wiltingasparagusfern, for some reason that first picture that posts, makes the part between the waistband and the first seam look much bunchier than it actually is. It lies quite flat on me. If you go down the page, to the photo with the little vest, I think that is a more accurate representation. I certainly don't have a flat stomach but it actually flatters. And it is beautifully made.

That type of nylon lace is soft and looks good initially but can bobble over time, and is easy to tear or scorch. It’s a good quality lace in terms of structure, nylon lace can be durable as long as it’s treated with care. I have a fifties dress in essentially the same lace that still looks good, 70 years on.

PipilottaDelicatessa · 16/08/2025 18:34

That's pretty, but they don't seem to say what it's made of, which probably means polyester.

Laboheme78 · 16/08/2025 20:32

Ok so I just hired a Doen dress for an event and also because I was thinking of buying the same one and I was disappointed to be honest. The dress (Ischia) does not have the lace but honestly I couldn’t see what justified the £385 price tag. It was a nice dress, but incredibly thin fabric and nothing about it made me think it was worth the money. And then, about 2 weeks ago I was shopping with my daughter in H&M and I found what I can only describe as a Doen dupe for £27.99. I literally never buy anything in H&M but I tried it on and….it was just as good as the Doen dress, albeit it was black and not blue. So I bought the H&M one and I’ve worn it 3 times already. Not sure that helps but I am very delighted!!!!!!
