Items you have ordered recently that were a ridiculously bad fit

Just a bit of a rant as I currently have a number of items to pack and return - all things I had such high hopes for!

An M&S stretchy sleeveless column dress - such a bad cut - a kind of figure 8 shape that was so gapy at the top that even if I had a really large bust the fabric under the arms would still stick out.

A Jaeger boxy linen jacket - I waited and waited for my size to come back into stock. It could have been perfect - a cropped black linen jacket - but it was just too boxy with darts in the wrong place. And the linen was kind of stiff.

A Sezane dress for my older teen dd - a knitted fitted dress with long sleeves. Fabric was not at all what we expected - £125 for thin tshirt fabric! And even though dd has a slim hour glass figure, it was just wrong in every way - her size was tight across the chest (even though she is a b cup) but there was all this excess fabric sticking out from her hips! I don’t think it would fit anyone.

so frustrating…

A Cos jumper size S. Could hardly get my head through, but it swam on the rest of my size 12 body.

Oh yes Cos is on my list of “only for giants” shops too, along with Hush and Sezane as mentioned above

Also Poetry and Monsoon

A lovely very fine wool, black polo neck from Reiss sale. Originally very expensive. Ordered small and medium ( normally a size 10) and it was massive. Not described as oversized at all. Very disappointing, lovely sweater.

I have 2 newish pairs of Zara jeans which look great but had to try on about 10 pairs to get them, and every pair fit differently. I will only buy from them when I can go in person. The two I bought are not the same size - one my regular and one a size smaller so the opposite experience to yours - and one pair is much longer than the other.

My most recent gripe is with Uniqlo. I do love them and buy a lot there but they are taking 'oversized' and 'boxy' to a new level lately. I'm an Amazon woman and now buying M and sometimes S - god knows how petite women are getting on there.

Edited

I concur. The Zara wide leg jeans I have and love are THREE sizes below my dress size. I would have been able to set up home in the size that were meant to fit me.

M&S bra. I’m a 32E everywhere else ie 32 band and 37 around fullest part. Ordered 32E M&S, band done up on the loosest setting measured 61 cm so just over 24 inches. Couldn’t get it on, cups were tiny too.

Username8364648 · 11/08/2025 20:50

Everything is just disappointing these days and it feels like a full time job repackaging stuff and returning to various lockers/etc really miss the high street

Empress13 · 11/08/2025 21:29

Ordered some trousers from M&S a few months ago dunno about a row with me boots they had positively divorced

Yes, another shop where I (an actual giant) wear Mediums and they're big on me.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/08/2025 21:43

A pair of leopard pumps from Gabor which were gorgeous but had to be returned.
I take a 5.5 wide fit. I can't size up to 6 because my right foot is a 5 and the left 5.5.
Turns out their "wide" fit is not an E which it is in the UK. It's the equivalent to our standard fit D. So they were too narrow.
I was not happy. I can't wear uncomfortable shoes.

beachwalkx · 11/08/2025 22:48

ASOS was a fun one
ordered a jersey type stretch dress from their standard range, size 14, fitted perfectly
ordered another jersey type stretch dress from their standard range, size 24, fitted perfectly
if I put them against each other, they’re the same size, and even worse I’m a size 16/18!

Speedo swimsuit

Looked like I was trying to conceal a bag of ferrets about my person. Utterly depressing….

Speedo have ridiculously small sizing, you are right.
I stick to Adidas now.

Vinted Seller descriptions can vary wildly, so although they aren't strictly incorrect, they are often a bad fit either way. It's so hard to tell in a photo..
and what gives with the vivid colouring photoshop? 🤨
Everything is dazzling pink, red or blue.. In the photo. It's misleading. I usually keep the stuff, but they have lost a future Buyer.

Oh my God, the oversize thing

A jacket from Uniqlo with stupidly long sleeves. I mean, even if I were 6 inches taller, those sleeves would be too long.

it's a really well-made jacket, but it's not the kind where you can just roll up the sleeves and it still look okay. So I suppose it has to go back which is really annoying. Alternative is to take it to a tailor.

As so many places are doing this now, I do wonder if that will be a good idea.

Tailoring is always a good idea, IMHO. I do it all the time, because I am petite.

Trousers, almost always unless they are cropped, then they are a normal length on me. And with some dresses and blouses I ask my seamstress to make an extra buttonhole (I don[t like to show cleavage). Some v necks come up to my sternum, and sometimes camisoles ruin the look.

Lightweight jeans from Long Tall Sally.
Huge on the waist, snug on the bum and the length is just comical. I am very long legged and always have to buy extra long length bottoms, but these have about 6 inches excess length even on me!
Currently trying to work out the complicated paperless returns process and realised you have to pay to return as well. I won’t be ordering again.

Long tall Sally are dreadful clothes.

IleftmybaginNewportPagnell · 12/08/2025 17:14

I’ve just got back from trying on some jeans in H&M, took a 12 and 14 into the fitting room (I’m 12 in other shops) and had to get a 16 which fitted fine. On the way out I looked at the size 8 and it was more of a 6 or even 4. Earlier I’d tried Uniqlo’s linen barrel legs as recommended on here! Couldn’t do up the M but the legs were a good proportion. The L did up but - as my boyfriend remarked - “it’s Hammertime!” 😂

spoonbillstretford · 12/08/2025 17:15

M&S chinos, size 14. Now fit me nicely as a size 10.

DiscoBob · 12/08/2025 17:17

I practically cried and wanted to cut my toes off when the VW boots I ordered were way to small. Despite being my usual size. I then bought a shoe stretcher but I don't think it's going to work.

I'll just have to wear them for one photo and then sell them. Real pity. But hopefully I might make a bit if money as they're great condition and I get them for a bargain.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 12/08/2025 17:23

Being plus sized, buying anything off the t'internet is a lottery. Out of maybe six things ordered, I might send five back. This from "plus" and "curve" range manufacturers too. Ffs, if you've been in the game this long get it bloody right!

Ordered a pair of cargo trousers, loved the look of them. Ordered a size 16 because I wanted them slightly baggy. Looks like DD36 is going to get them. She’s a size 6/8!

I ordered some from Vinted in a size 14 - Tu brand they are tiny! I would care but I’ve successfully bought another 2 pairs of Tu trousers in a 16 and they were huge!

BobnLen · 12/08/2025 17:48

An over size cardigan from Next Clearance. I'm tall, size 14, big boned so ordered a medium (12-14). It was massive, sleeves halfway down my hands, I have very long arms. I don't know who it would fit. I reordered in small and it was still oversized but looked quite nice. But who wears the medium and large sizes

Don't say that.. I just got a jacket from Poetry and was chuffed it was a size 8! Don't be telling ne their sizing is just enormous

Maybe there's a designer at Next with a really tiny head trying to take it out on the world!

That made me laugh so much @Athreedoorwardrobe

Mmm, glad I found this thread I thought it was just me!

M and S for me.
I tried on a nice looking knitted top that looked fine on the hanger, yet had bunched, lumpy seams, especially where the armholes connected to the body.

Similarly all trousers - too much fabric in the crotch and rear with scratchy elastic waists.

The trousers all reminded me of saggy slacks from the 80's that my grandmother would wear to do some cleaning in - then chuck aside later, when she returned to her usual, lovely clothes.

I’ve always found M & S jeans are cut on the skimpy side. Always a weird shape too.

Yes, it's weird as M&S clothing generally is generous. So the 14s not fitting made me feel fatter than ever. But now I'm a size 10 and they fit so it wasn't me!

FluffyWabbit · 18/08/2025 10:58

A size 6 puffy sleeve blouse. The puffy sleeves were so puffy that they completely obscured my ability to see in order to walk! Who is wearing these monstrous sleeves?
