What footwear for evening - ugly feet + hot holiday + walking

Really interested to know what footwear people are taking with them.
I am taking dresses - stretchy black/ khaki bit lower than knee length.
There is loads of walking up and down steps but it's also hot. The obviouds choice is a flat sandal. However I have very wide, very flat feet that impacts my ankles looking chunky. So I need coverage and a thin sole makes the flat footed thing look worse.
Any idea for colour or styles? Never mattered when I was younger but I don't want toook grumpy or hobbly

Do you have room for a spare pair of shoes? Because in your position I would wear lightweight trainers for travelling and walking and then sandals for the evening.

Maddy70 · 08/08/2025 16:47

Noone is looking at your ankles or feet. Wear what's comfy and cool

I have loads of room ( for once) !

At home I would normally wear my dresses with a boot. I can’t see that working in a hot holiday type place,

I’m taking 2 of my favourite Birkenstock style, Mayari (white and black) a beige pair of Clark’s Un Rio sneakers for day time and walking, then a flat pair of delicate black Mary Janes with added insoles and a pair of beaded sparkly sandals (flat and thick soles) for the evening.
Plus flip flops as slippers/swimming pool.
10 days cruise in the Mediterranean with sightseeing.
Pedicure or footscrub before you go and painted toenails are “de rigeur”. More important than heels IMO.

on holiday atm, I have gym trainers, flat leather converse, leather sandals (Moshulu) and sparky flats. I have boney skinny feet and horrible thickened toe nails, I improve the look by bright varnish, but no-one is looking at my feet.

I have the same problem; I used to have narrow feet with slim ankles; now at 60, seem to have inherited my mothers flat feet, which have caused an increase in foot width and widened my ankles!
Very flat sliders or sandals seem to make me more susceptible to tripping up, especially on steps, so I find sandals with a small ‘flatform’ are better and give me a little more height. I’ll
see if I can find an example.

Have you tried TEVAs? They are Velcro straps so would adjust to fit

SiobahnRoy · 08/08/2025 17:15

Birkenstocks are my comfiest shoes, to the extent that I’m seriously considering not taking any trainers with me 😱

I'm taking my leather Teva slims and a beige pair of Teva slims (not leather) and an original pair of Tevas that are metallic purple, pink and oranges. The leather for night, the beige pair night and day and the metallic ones for days at the beach.
Guaranteed comfort.
Can you tell I'm a Teva fan!

Andbegin · 08/08/2025 17:31

DM sandals, or any other similar chunky platformed ones. Can’t speak to other brands, but DMs are really comfy, and would go well with the dresses you describe.

Birkenstocks all the way!
I also wear a pair of trainers on the flight so I also have them if needed
I have lovely silver leather flats that I tuck into my bag so if I fancy being a bit more dressy at nighy I can wear them
I dont do heels on holidays
