whats a nice perfume for a 21 year old. I’m 51 and my tastes will be very different . It’s for a birthday gift

Paradoxe by prada is nice 👍

I feel that at almost any age, perfume is too much of a personal choice to be bought by someone else, unless they know exactly what one wants.

Obviously a voucher would be a bit of a rubbish 21st birthday gift, but taking someone shopping for perfume could be lovely.

Alternatively, you could present them with a selection of samples, with the promise of a full bottle of whichever they prefer.

Or if they’re experimentally minded, you could give them a perfume sample subscription for a year, so they’d get to experience a wealth of perfumes that will probably be unfamiliar to them.

Bloom Perfumery

offers such a service. Two other brilliant places to look would be:

Les Senteurs (old, grand, wonderful,

Sainte Cellier (new, exquisite curation)

This would be a wonderful present.

Maybe a sample set of a newer brand like this

taxidriver · 08/08/2025 08:34

Completely agree with the first part of your
post and whilst it’s a nice idea, presenting them with different choices, is still problematic as they may not like any. You nailed it saying perfume is too much of a personal choice.

OP - Could you ask a friend or her Mum what she wears?

typicaltuesdaynight · 08/08/2025 17:43

Thanks for the replies . I did think about getting her some sample sets . She mentioned she likes alien last night

Very difficult as tastes vary so much. My girls like Versace Dylan Purple, Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess, Prada Infusión d’iris, Armani My Way.

singthing · 08/08/2025 17:49

Perfume is 100% a personal thing. Unless you know exact fragrance names (and not just brands), buy something else.

What you like might make her gag, and vice versa.

owlyboo · 08/08/2025 18:27

@typicaltuesdaynightalien is quite a distinct fragrance so if she mentioned she likes it I’d go with that.

Ahwig · 08/08/2025 18:29

I wear Jo Malone and my daughter in law is a massive convert after noticing my fragrance and she is late 20’s.

TheOnlyWayisGerard · 08/08/2025 19:19

I love Alien. I also like Aura, also Thierry Mugler. Others in my collection include; the original Poison, Hypnotic Poison, Opium, L’interdit and a couple of Chanel (Coco and No.5). Black Opium tends to be very popular with the late teens/early 20s, as do the various Marc Jacobs fragrances. It depends what else she leans towards, I like the heaviness and (often) overpowering scent of Alien, hence why I like some of the heavy 80s ones.

Goodluckanddontfitup · 08/08/2025 20:14

I disagree with those saying not to buy as it’s a personal choice, I think it’s lovely to have a gift of perfume that someone has chosen for you, sometimes it’s nice to try something different that you wouldn’t necessarily have picked for yourself, and as long as it’s not rancid it will be fine!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/08/2025 21:10

Are you able to go to a Jo Malone store with her? They do a fragrance experience thing where they help you pick a scent, get a hand massage etc - it could be a nice day out then a glass of wine or afternoon tea or something together.

FWIW my godmother who was a very glam, childless woman with a high flying career bought me Chanel No 5 for my 21st, and said every woman should always own a bottle. At the time I thought it was “too old” for me, but I have never been without a bottle since.

xYerDaSellsAvon · 08/08/2025 21:53

This is Her by Zadig and Voltaire. Zara do a spot on dupe called Fields At Nightfall. My 19 year old daughter loves both fragrances equally ❤️

Agreed. I chose This is Her for my daughter as I knew she would love the minimal packaging as well as the fragrance. Its her signature now ❤️

mumoftwo1975 · 08/08/2025 23:30

My dd has requested the Billie Eilish perfumes for her 21st next week. She already has the gold bottle (Eilish1) and has asked for the other two. She also likes musky vanilla scents and Alien, Bachorat Rouge, M&S pink pepper and Chanel no 5 and mademoiselle. Hth

donadont · 08/08/2025 23:32

I smelled the most amazing scent at H&M today. It was a young woman with her mother so didn't feel comfortable asking

it smelled of vanilla mixed with orange. Not helpful to the op, but does anyone know why this could be?

ThatMiddleClassFood · 09/08/2025 18:19

Prada paradoxe is a pretty safe choice I think if you're not 100% sure. Alien is lovely did she say she likes it as in she wants it or she already has enough of it?

typicaltuesdaynight · 12/08/2025 07:48

I’ve just bought love notes for her as she said that her friend had it and it smelt gorgeous for an everyday perfume. Comes in a cute bottle as well. Thank you to everyone who has replied to me, I’ll be keeping the
recommend for future reference
