Shell/non-lined/packable waterproof

If you have one that ticks these boxes, where is it from please?!:

  • thin enough to easily to stuff into a rucksack or it's own pocket (so one-layer/non-lined)
  • not floral
  • capacious hood, ideally with toggles to make it tighter when needed
  • fairly breathable, i.e. doesn't immediately make you wetter with sweat than you would be with rain
  • can be over the head/90s Stone Roses style, or normal zip-up
  • doesn't have to be full-length - it's more of a packable/caught in a shower one rather than an everyday one

I have good, robust waterproofs from Protected Species and Seasalt that I'd wear in continued bad weather, but I'm after something thin enough to keep with me for unexpected downpours or when it's that weird warm weather where it's raining but you're too hot for a proper outdoor waterproof. Thank you!

No idea what your budget is but Dh recently did a lot of research for a lightweight waterproof jacket as his mountain equipment goretex one is looking very scruffy. He finally found after reading hundreds of reviews the hagloff l.i.m gtx ll waterproof, not cheap but very high spec we both got one and love how light it is, packs down very small for travelling too.

I have one like you describe. It's either Tresspass or Regatta I can't remember which one. It's a plain colour

MoreRabbit · 05/08/2025 14:57

Thanks @AnchorWHAT - I like the look of that but it's more than I wanted to spend (sorry, should have given a budget!), and I don't need anything that technical really. Ideally I wouldn't spend more than £25ish second-hand or £50ish new if need be.

I have 2 sweaty Betty ones - one long, ones short - and v pleased with them.

I noticed in primark today short waterproof jackets with the gym stuff for £26 which looked v good. Black or a sort of brown/sable/grey.

Berghaus. I’ve had mine the best part of 10 years so I don’t know exactly what they’ve got now but they usually have something that should tick your boxes including good hood and breathability. They’re not cheap but you can usually find some sort of discount price.
oh… id not seen your second post, may be beyond your budget. But they’re very durable IME.

MoreRabbit · 05/08/2025 15:01

Hadn't thought of them @wwyd2021medicine , thank you

The colour really doesn't show well on pic ( I happened to take a pic for DD) - it more brown/taupe than it shows and less grey

I have one from Amazon It isn't branded and it was £25 or 24.99 to be exact! Its long enough to cover your bum has a hood and isn't lined, mine is navy.

MoreRabbit · 05/08/2025 17:20

Thanks all, much appreciated!

Decathlon for this kind of thing, every time. Very cheap and cheerful (pullover style), similar, but full zip. Still in budget and better quality, but yellow; more colours but cropped length. And a proper technical lightweight waterproof for 55 quid.

WhereAreWeNow · 06/08/2025 12:19

I have a Uniqlo one that ticks all these boxes except maybe the capacious hood. It's got a standard hood, not especially big.

Nothungrycat · 06/08/2025 20:26

I'm researching similar - with the added quirk that it needs to be size 18 - and its weird how much outdoors clothing stops at size 16. And good breathability is essential for me as I get hot very easily, especially when walking. I'm quite keen on this from North Face https://www.thenorthface.co.uk/en-gb/p/women-211718/women-s-quest-hooded-jacket-NF00A8BA?color=BOA but I appreciate that its more than you want to pay. It's a good time of the year for sales of summer outdoor clothing though!

UninterestedBeing12 · 06/08/2025 20:43

Mine is 66° North. It's a blow the budget jacket
But it did see off icelandic torrential rain, which is impressive.

Showerproof rather than waterproof

Showerproof rather than waterproof

Yes, as specified in the OP: "more of a packable/caught in a shower one".

digiwidgy · 07/08/2025 09:14

I am quite taken by a brand called Puffit. They are all waterproof and I think a little more stylish than the usual waterproof from outdoor shops.

wwyd2021medicine · 07/08/2025 14:26

@DisplayPurposesOnly

Haha yes my reading skills not up to scratch there 😂
In my defence, I once got soaked at a festival before I had fully realised the difference between showerproof and waterproof so have been particular about the labelling ever since

ppaaWWss · 07/08/2025 16:58

I have one from Uniqlo that fits the brief and on me at least is a great flattering cut as well.

i think it is this:
