I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

I really hate wearing flowery dresses. I do think there is a lack of good design for clothing these days. We've lost somethin along the way. Certainly the loss of more affordable shops like Topshop and Warehouse have contributed to this hive mind dressing.

I like Japanese style. I have a lot of Muji and Uniqlo block colour dresses.

Admittedly a bit utilitarian for some people. I wear interesting jewellery or bright sandals.

I love the Japanese style too. Spent a lot of money on clothes over there!!!!
Japanese ladies always look so smart and presentable and as my teenager says - not much boobage on show. They are modest without being frumpy

I hate to see very tight leggings, especially flesh couloured ones, paired with a cropped top. It’s not a good look on anyone, but looks dreadful on anyone who isn’t very thin.
I wish these people would wear a baggy dress.

I remember walking down Saint Georges Terrace in Perth and a guy coming up to me and saying I knew you were English, Because you and your children are dressed properly
12 months later, we two were in tanks and shorts and look like all the other Kmart Target residents 😆
You can always spot an Aussie a wedding

You are spot on with the target/kmart thing, from memory, at least. I don’t miss that at all.
How do you spot an Aussie at a wedding? (Asking so I can avoid being obviously Australian at the next set of nuptials I go to!) 🤣

See, I don't think there is a "hive mind". I think in the UK we have more style diversity than most places I've visited. I've certainly not seen the OP's supposed Me+Em uniform everywhere.

I always say to my 4 and 6 year old “if someone makes a joke and no one laughs, it’s not a joke, it’s bullying.” Worth bearing in mind?

bindin · 01/08/2025 09:42

clunky sandals.

Clunky or chunky?

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

I guess you don’t have a job then! (And no, no formal workplace in NYC would let you wear a strappy top and shorts - given half of them still have tan tights on the dress code I really don’t think you have anything to laugh about)

Butteredradish2 · 01/08/2025 09:45

I dont see many women in dresses where i am. Most of them seem to be wearing those really tight sports legging things where one can see every bit of lump , crease and crevice on their bottoms

MustardGlass · 01/08/2025 09:45

For a couple of years I wore dresses nearly everyday. No thinking just pop one on with the standard jewellery and shoes, jacket if needed. One less thing I had to think about.

Iamnotalemming · 01/08/2025 09:46

Well I went to a conference in London recently in a very male industry and was delighted to see almost half of the attendees were women, most of them wearing fabulous dresses. It was a roasting hot day, they looked professional and great, and much better than the men sweating in suits. I also had a long dress on but navy rather than flowers. I wonder if that is acceptable in OP's eyes?

Smilesinthesunshine · 01/08/2025 09:49

I totally agree, I hate the long shapeless, frumpy, floral dresses that seem to have dominated for years now.

Bgasfraudfraud · 01/08/2025 09:49

Depends how old OP is. Shorts and a tank top out and about is not a good look on anyone over 50!

I still wear shorts at home but if I am out and about I wear long dresses, below knee skirts or crop trousers.

Do you live in Benidorm OP? Having so much flesh on display out and about is a Benidorm thing.

That's the relationship I have with her. If I cared what people thought of me and my daughter I would hide under a rock. Everyone is entitled to their opinion we are all human.

The only thing I am self conscious about is what I am wearing. I grew up in London you have to have pride in yourself in London or else you get it. If my loved ones and friends never told me how I look in an outfit and I went out looking dreadful I would be fuming. I had a friend who always said I lost weight and I was always the same 12 stone weight. I rather someone told me the truth about how I look rather than lie. I can easily change my outfit but my personality will stay the same I like who I am and my daughter and that's all that matters.

That’s absolute drivel. I also grew up in London, and have lived in London my whole life, and no one has ever cared how I dressed. I would say London is the one place where you can wear what you like, whatever style or lack thereof you like.

Sounds like you just know (and are bringing up) rude people.

I'm in the UK and I have never agreed with a post so much.

Sorry, but unless you are a 5ft10 willowy sort, long flowery dresses look absolutely awful. Add in some puff sleeves and you may as well wear a sack.

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 09:54

I think the op means a vest top. Basically a sleeveless t shirt.
A tank top is similar to a waistcoat. It is something you wear over something such as a blouse.
I avoid vests unless I am on holiday or in my own garden. I don’t tend to buy anything sleeveless anymore. I’m my last job we were not allowed to wear sleeveless clothes under any circumstances.

ThatCyanCat · 01/08/2025 09:56

@Falseknock you seem to be getting a hard time, so just to help you out, I thought it was pretty obvious you and your daughter were making jokes. They might not be my kind of jokes but they are obviously jokes and not meant to be taken seriously.

It depends on the shape of the dress. Tall willowy people can wear anything, so they don't count. A long floral dress with a shape to it suits more people.

BountifulPantry · 01/08/2025 09:59

I like a long dress because you can be cool without having to overtly get your body out- pale skin plus general insecurity about my body haha

BrendaSmall · 01/08/2025 10:01

You definitely won’t catch me in a flowery dress 🤣🤣
Cheap shops sell plenty of, Primark, Shein, BooHoo, PLT and other stores, they’re absolutely awful!

It’s not a good look on anyone over 30. Even then, it only looks decent if you are slim and very toned. By that I mean toned to a level where you train your muscles for hours, every single week, and don’t carry much body fat. Arms should show well defined muscle which quite frankly the vast majority of people don’t.
Otherwise you look better covered up.
Of course people can wear what they like, but as this thread is very judgey and posters are sneering at women who wear floral dresses, they must accept the reality of being judged too.

I'm a born & raised Londoner & loads of us can't dress for shit!

RaininSummer · 01/08/2025 10:03

The floral dress is great for the office. Long enough to cover legs, cool enough too. Nobody wants to wear office trousers when it's hot.

I was being kind saying 50!

So you should cover yourself if you add not shredded. Rubbish.
