Jeans (again)

I know it's been asked so many times but I'm really struggling to find some jeans that fit. Welcome any suggestions as I've made a few mistakes. Things that come up too high and strangle my waist or ribs. Gape at the back. Or are too tight around the thigh. Or are too long and drag on the floor channeling my teenage 90s.

I'm a size 10-12 and 5'4", small frame, I've got a very dippy back so things gape, but somewhat flabby thighs so sizing down looks awful. I just want mid rise decent basics. Not high rise. Not super wide leg but a bit wide is ok. I prefer comfort rather than structure. Relaxed.

Please help!

I can only wear elasticated waist jeans or the waist gapes by about a foot. Sexy they are not and I can't tuck anything in.
Ill be shopping from Chums at this rate.
Apparently Snag does near enough made to measure sizes for thin and curve. Take a look. I haven't checked them out yet.

I am also a big fan of elasticated waist jeans. I've been getting them from vinted by searching for the word elasticated! But this means I keep piling up jeans that don't work for other reasons, too long, too tight etc.

I wonder if Levi’s would work?

BarnacleBeasley · 29/07/2025 13:15

I've got narrow hips and quite muscular thighs, and used to struggle to find jeans that fitted when I was slimmer because of gaping. What worked well was to buy cheap men's jeans (or any jeans that fitted my thighs) and then pay to have them taken in up the back seam so they fitted my bum and waist.

ToadRage · 29/07/2025 14:23

I asked a couple of weeks back and was suggested Sainsbury's. I got some good jeans there, they fit nicely, sit on my waist not my hips, and they are not too long, I'm only 5'2. Only issue is my AFO's don't fit under them so may need to return for some wide leg ones but that probably doesn't apply to you.

I LOVE Ayr brand, particularly their "Secret Sauce" model. They are mid-rise on me (short torso here, so high-rise comes up to my ribs and makes me feel strangled). I get the shorter length at 5'4 inches. These fit my waist really well, but I do think it is worth taking jeans that fit perfectly on the hips and thighs to the tailor to have them taken in at the waist. It's a very easy alteration which makes the jeans look amazing if you are lucky enough to have a curvy waist/back.
For a slim leg, I like their "Roadie" model, and for a slight barrel leg (but not really - it is very subtle, just a slightly wide leg, really) their "Knockout" style).
AYR are the first jeans that I've put on and both felt comfortable (usually, I can't wait to get home and take jeans off and put on pajama pants) and that I looked GREAT. They do something to the waist, hips, and thighs that is extremely flattering, and they make even stubby legs look long.

The American brand sounds great but I'm more the Sainsbury's price point!

always sainsburys for me. They just fit me well bloody love them.

HouseFullOfChaos · 29/07/2025 18:35

Your size and height is the same as me and I currently love the Next jeans. They're slim fit in straight leg or boot cut and a regular in length. They're so comfortable and my new go to jeans so much so that I have multiple pairs now.

Monvelo · 30/07/2025 14:27

@HouseFullOfChaos thank you - I looked at next and they sell lots of different brands eg simply be, m&co etc. Is there a particular one you'd recommend?

@Monvelo Filter the Brand on Next and Bodyfit on Curves.

AzurePanda · 30/07/2025 15:25

I have a very small waist but big bum and thighs. High waisted barrel legs are what works for me.

Lambzig · 30/07/2025 15:45

Try Uniqlo. I am 5ft 4 and their length works well on me. I have been buying them for years because they fit well (proportioned for that height). Lots of relaxed shapes at the moment. Slight warning that they tend to come up quite large.

It's just the next own brand ones. I've taken a couple of pictures of the two labels inside my favourite pair for you so hopefully they'll upload

My DD is similar shape and height to you and gets on well with H&M wide jeans.

1apenny2apenny · 31/07/2025 09:16

How about going into M&S and grabbing all the different styles and trying them on. They do different lengths so very handy. Sainsburys also good.

Lastly do you sew? It’s actually quite easy to adjust the waist of a pair of jeans, lots of videos on YouTube.

They never seem to have things in store!

Thanks! Some arrived today and I really like them but the waist is absolutely hanging off by 2". I'm going to try a size smaller, might work because the legs are quite relaxed in these styles. Normally I wouldn't get the size on! Fingers crossed.

It's v annoying you have to pay for postage then pay for returning things!??

OP posts:
TheLeadbetterLife · 31/07/2025 19:58

Just take in the waist, it's so easy to do, and much less faff than trying on hundreds of jeans in the hope that one pair will exactly fit your frame.

Monvelo · 31/07/2025 21:28

If the smaller size is no good then I'll have to look into that. I only know how to do what my mum called 'a tuck' which I can't imagine looking good.

OP posts:
Monvelo · 31/07/2025 21:38

I've just watched a few videos of how to do it and my mind is a bit blown! Going to try this on my favourite jeans that are too big now I've lost some weight.

These are my favourite jeans! I have 3 pairs of Next bootcut.

Monvelo · 01/08/2025 19:53

The smaller size from next still go on done but are gaping at the back. I'm going to have to get busy with a needle. I don't have a sewing machine but I've watched some videos of how to take the waist in by hand.
