Ideas/ brands for glam poolside wear

We’ve got a holiday to Crete coming up in a few weeks and I’d like to up my holiday-wear game. I love fashion/ clothes but I’ve never been on many beach holidays / hot weather destinations so always feel slightly unsure about what to wear round the pool/ beach. We’re staying at a very nice hotel and I dont want to feel like the least glamorous woman there! Which I definitely have in the past.

I’m 55, size 6-8 with a small bust (gamine for Kibbe followers). I like bright colours, black and white (high contrast).

Where should I be looking please? What items do I need? I have two decent bikinis, plain white slides and some Birkenstocks. Oh and I’ve got some nice sunnies. I don’t need evening wear and I’m good for day wear for sightseeing etc.
thanks!

if you fancy splashing the cash Agua Bendita, Vic and Melissa Oderbash will see you right.

On Instagram WeAreTwinset also known as WatTheBrand have recently returned from their holidays and were displaying some lovely poolside looks.

You need some cover ups. Pitusa beach dresses are good for bright but summery colours - I have one and often get asked where it’s from.

Or John Lewis often have some nice options, or Monsoon https://www.monsoon.co.uk/womens/womens-clothing/cotton_linen_viscose/beachwear-swimwear/. www.monsoon.co.uk/womens/womens-clothing/cotton_linen_viscose/beachwear-swimwear/]].]]

Open shirt style of cover up is popular but I’m also gamine and this style does nothing for me. Look for something with a waist ideally.

Some wear jewellery with their swimwear, I daren’t but many do.

@Lykia thank you so much for the suggestions I will check those out! I had a quick look at the two insta accounts and they look great.

@minipie thank you and I think that’s my problem - the cover ups I have tried swamp me and do absolutely nothing for me. I found this on John Lewis which is much more my thing…? Or is it awful?

That’s lovely but when the weather is hot, and you are covered in suncream, all those elasticated bits will not be comfortable IME. So wouldn’t work as a poolside throw on.

Unfortunately it is kind of a choice between comfortable and flattering. Something with a drawstring waist would be better. Or something you wear open.

this could work

minipie · 29/07/2025 10:50

Or this style although I’d find this a bit too clingy in the heat

I would keep the actual dress simple, Crete in Aug is boiling. I'm possibly very unfashionable but I like bikinis and swimsuits with the matching dresses or shorts.

What about getting some nice big sunnies and some nice slip on sandals? Also a nice beach bag (that can cope with suncreamed hands). More glamorous accessories will dress up even a simple plain dress.

The glamorous women I noticed on holiday always seem to be able to keep their hair under control, something which I have never managed, so maybe a nice claw clip or a plait with a stylish hat?

We’re going end of the first week in September so hopefully it won’t be too/ uncomfortably hot?

@minipie thank you for your suggestions I really like the second one, the maxi dress. The first one I don’t think will
suit me - I’m very flat chested so deep v necks don’t look great. Thank you again 🙌

I had a similar dilemma and bought this https://www.monsoon.co.uk/ivy-palm-embroidered-kaftan-black-20017980001.html
It looks lovely on and both DH and DS said it looks very glamorous and expensive

@UpToonGirl I have some lively oversized sunnies but my slip on sandals are very boring! I think that’s something I’ll look for, and a nice beach bag. We’re not going till the first week in September so hopefully it won’t be stiflingly hot. My hair is dead dead short - pixie - so I can’t get a slide in it! I think that’s why I feel a bit meh beachside with no make up and no jewellery on (unlike everyday). Thank you ☺️
