It was my 40th a month back and I was away on a special holiday where my loved ones suggested they purchase my gift there to give me more options. I didn’t fall in love with anything 😭 and so still have no present.

Now I’m back they are pressing me to find something I would like. I would like to get something tangible that I wouldnt normally buy for myself but I have no idea and nothing is hitting the spot.

If you had approx £500 x2 to spend on yourself what would you go for? Please inspire me.

Jewellery 100% or a beautiful leather bag.

I'm in my 50s now but we went to Paris for my 40th & dh bought be an absolutely amazing leather bag from a French designer i loved. Due to the time of year of my birthday we were really lucky that there was a sale on so I ended up with a bag I ordinarily couldn't have afforded it was about 3k at the time & we got it for €1,200. I still treasure that bag.

For my 50th we went away to an Italian city & dh bought me a v beautiful handmade gold & gemstone cocktail ring.

Each time I look at / wear / use these things it brings back wonderful memories

Jewellery is a fab idea, I definitely suit warm colours so would be inclined to yellow gold. Anyone seen anything pretty or could suggest somewhere nice to look?

It’s true you’ll get far better value leatherwork in Europe than in the UK - so maybe you need another trip, @TheGodOfSmallPotatoes?

Specifically Style / Beauty things I would happily buy right now (so no need for posts about boilers or school uniforms or ‘something for the family Hmm) might include:

Earrings
An Hermes bangle
New boots
A suede jacket
Perfume (You could choose a fragrance from Perfumer H in a cut glass bottle.
A full set of running clothes.
An Eres swimsuit!
A series of facials or massages

Just seen you’re thinking of jewellery!

Great ideas! If I went down the jewellery avenue does anyone have any links to websites that are nice? I have been informed that Pandora is ‘cheap crap’ 🤷‍♀️

@TheGodOfSmallPotatoes what sort of jewellery do you generally like?

I wear mostly 18ct yellow gold, with some unplated 18ct white gold.

I'm not a fan of platinum.

Have a look at Annoushka website & they stock in Liberty's too - there's a fab jewellery hall there which is definitely worth a browse if you're in London.

LifesTooShortForBadSex · 27/07/2025 13:42

It's horses for courses really but I don't like Pandora personally. I know loads who do.
For a special birthday & a £1,000 budget I'd want something less generic

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/07/2025 13:44

Oh god, not Pandora. It, err, won’t last. Would Wolf and Badger have something? You can filter on what you want, and they have many brands to choose from and price points to suit.

There is a jewellery shop in Winchester which has gorgeous options and makes custom pieces. If I had that amount of birthday credit and was anywhere near local I'd head there. Their website is very limited (crap, actually considering how nice their stuff is irl) but the shop is 👌🏽

Birmingham jewellery quarter must also have similar places

Thanks for all the ideas, I’m going to check out those kind enough to provide specifics.

Can you put the two £500 together to make one gift, or will the individuals want to have got you something just from them?
For jewelry come to the jewelry quarter in Birmingham. There are loads of makers. I would recommend Victoria James on Vyse Street for bespoke. They are absolutely amazing.

Flamingmentalcats · 27/07/2025 19:16

What about second hand jewellery? You can get something better quality for a lot less than new. I like looking on Segals website or even Ramsdens

Tillygan60 · 27/07/2025 19:58

If you can get to Bristol, Diana Porter Jeweller on Park Street has some lovely pieces. They also take commissions I think, if you have some ideas of your own...
