Best quality gold plated jewellery

I know people will say it’s an oxymoron but I can’t afford solid gold (I have looked). I have also looked second hand/antique but just struggle to find what I like and would wear.

i want everyday stuff that i am not worried about wearing like I am with expensive stuff. Studs I can sleep and occasionally swim in if I forget to take them out (it’s been known)

i do have some budget but want to spend it wisely. Am open to high street, online or places like Etsy if someone has a good seller they’d suggest. I tend to like non fussy, fairly delicate, possibly lightly scandi type stuff. I just don’t want it tarnishing or falling apart in 5 minutes.

You'd be better off with gold filled rather than plated. It's longer lasting and not much more expensive. I like Dinova Jewellery on Etsy

What is gold-filled? I’ve bought a few of the allegedly ‘water-proof’ gold plated rings and necklaces so many companies sell, but they all quickly lose their gold colour. Does gold-filled last?

myladyjane · 27/07/2025 09:09

Oh thank you for that! There is something on there which is exactly what I’m looking for and reasonable price too

@GrizeldaMcBain this is my fear. Too many tales of it going green or rubbing off. I know you get what you pay for and everything but 50 quid is still 50 quid if you only get a few wears out of it. I’d rather stick to accessorize for that…..

Gold filled has a base of non-precious metal and a thick layer of gold that is bonded on, it has much more gold than gold plated - about 5% compared to 0.05%
The waterproof jewellery is usually just cheap gold plated bought from China and sold with a massive markup
There's also the option of vermeil which is gold plated on sterling silver - so all precious and no base metal. blBut the gold is still a thin layer of plating so I prefer gold filled as it lasts much longer

If you can't afford gold, have you thought about silver. If you have cool skin tone it is also likely to be more flattering.

myladyjane · 27/07/2025 12:27

@RosesAndHellebores sadly I am warm toned although towards the neutral end. I have a couple of lovely silver pieces which my dad got me on his travels which I do wear and love but gold is that bit more flattering on me.

I appreciate the price of gold is presently through the roof. There used to be a shop called Ciro that sold high quality costume/classic jewellery. It might be worth seeing if anythings available on the Internet.

I really like Tutti & Co jewellery. I'm sure John Lewis sell it. It's a lovely tone of gold not brassy at all.

SaritaS · 18/11/2025 20:29

Can you be more specific about your price point? Solid gold does not have to be crazy expensive if you buy 9 karat. Try to look at Muse of My Own (super affordble) or Maya Magal (more expensive, but still quite affordable). With plating, you are simply never buying a lifetime piece - but for example PD paola does really lovely stuff.

Carrie Elizabeth jewellery! Wear my gold plated necklace everyday and have done for over 2 years - it’s still perfect

I find Monica Vinader vermeil lasts well.
