Hi everyone I’m going to Las Vegas next month - going to be extremely hot! Going as a group but there is going to be a girly night out - bars and maybe a club. I need help with an outfit please.. I’m 5’3, size 16, a pear shape. Any ideas very welcome x

It will be debilitating hot outside
but you will likely not venture out much at ALL
So dress for heavily air conditioned

MsNevermore · 25/07/2025 15:52

I live there 👋🏻
While it is hotter than the surface of the sun outside at this time of year (currently 7:49am and already 89° with a projected high of 100° - which is actually a lot cooler than it has been of late!), anywhere inside feels like the Arctic circle in comparison because of the A/C.
If you’re going to be in bars/clubs on the main strip, you actually don’t need to spend hardly anytime outside. You can park/be dropped off at the hotel closest to your destination, and walk through the air conditioned casino floors, and use the sky-bridges that connect the major hotel/casinos so you’re only outside for a minute or two.
Some of the more high-end clubs on the Strip (Hakassan, Omnia, Drai’s etc) have a dress code that’s quite strictly enforced, but I couldn’t tell you exactly what it is for women because the clubs are my idea of hell 😂 I’m much happier bar-hopping on Freemont Street than on the main strip.
Absolutely, categorically, under no circumstances wear heels higher than 3inches 🫠 by doing the walking routes above, you’ll end up walking a lot further distance-wise, but staying cool is more important, and your feet will die. You will see endless groups of young women, in skyscraper heels hobbling around, quickly realising their dire mistake 😂 Also if your destinations are at opposite ends of the strip and one of your group says “I can see it from here, we can just walk”…..no you can’t 🫠😂 The strip is one of the world’s most elaborate optical illusions 😂 My DH and I when we first got here decided because we can see it, walking from the MGM Grand to Treasure Island was totally doable…..don’t do it. Get an uber 😂
If it’s the high-end clubs you’re heading for, absolutely check the dress codes on their websites. If you’re just spending the night exploring the strip’s bars and restaurants, anything you’d normally wear for a night-out on a European holiday will be fine. I’m usually in a sundress and cowboy boots!

I’m fascinated @MsNevermore what made you move to Las Vegas?!

There’s an enormous USAF base here. DH’s job dictates we live here.
it absolutely was not our choice 😂

How long you been there?

like it?

what’s your life like?

ignore me! It’s just very rare to come across a Brit having move to LV!!

Agree re the AC, it's fricking freezing. Take a cardi if you feel the cold - you absolutely won't need it outside but inside... 🥶

There’s actually quite a bit community of Brits here!
Lots of them just made the choice to come here. Then there’s the Brits who married American’s. As far as I’m aware, I’m the only one at this base right now who married a US serviceman and ended up here on a posting rather than by choice 😂
Theres also an exchange program between the USAF and the RAF, so there’s a fair few British service families here too!

Happy? Children?

Happy? Children?

Happy is a weird way to describe it. I want to say yes, because a lot of it has been great…..but I’ve been incredibly homesick since we’ve been here. Nevada is the most expensive state in the whole country to own and insure a vehicle right now, so we only have one car which DH uses for work. Which means I’m stuck without one most of the time - and this city is not built for pedestrians in any way, shape or form 🫠 The job market here is also completely ridiculous - we also have one of the highest unemployment rates. I got all the legal stuff sorted so I can work here, but finding a job has been nigh on impossible 🙁
As much as I love the bustle of this city, and we are never short of something to do on weekends, even better on the rare occasion DH and I can get a babysitter, it’s been a very lonely few years for me and I’m very excited to get home and get a bit more normality back.
We have 3 DC’s who all go to a local elementary school - they are an academic year ahead of the children in their grade though because they were born in the U.K. and started school there. So the past school year has been pretty much a recap of most of the things they’d already learned in the U.K. but they’ve done incredibly well and made some great friends.

peachandbloodorange · 25/07/2025 16:21

I've been in Vegas a bunch for work - really love it but it's definitely its own thing! Agree with all of the above - prepare for savage air con, lots of walking, also pack a bucket of Factor 50 sunscreen because you're functionally going into the desert. Stay hydrated!

For me, Vegas Strip going out feels similar to dressing up and heading out in Manchester, if that makes sense? Statement clothes, high glam, big hair, bold make-up. Any of a close-fitting sparkly dress, or a statement dress, or slim-fitting trousers and spangly top, with some bling to accessorise, should see you through. You want to look at your photos and think yes, I was definitely in Las Vegas!

Such a helpful tread. I'm going on September and it's really useful to think about just how cold the aircon will bel

joanofaardvark · 02/08/2025 22:14

The aircon was so cold in the Luxor we’d go outside just to warm up!
