Just bought this dress because of another thread on here. Lovely dress, but the label says dry clean only. Anyone got this and washed it at home?

It is a really lovely dress, and I love a bargain!

Hope you all enjoy wearing yours and that it washes nicely 😉

I'd have been tempted too, if it was in green...

Lambswools · 25/07/2025 12:57

If you paid £30 for it, I'd wash it and hope for the best/accept it might not look it's best afterwards. If you paid £90, I'd send it back.

I usually put everything in the washing machine to die but even I wouldn't put that dress in. It will be ruined.

Lovely dress. I’m tempted to go for it in the pink, but I have a flabby stomach and I’m not sure satin would be a flattering look.

100% Viscose will shrink if washed.

Mine never has.

littlebilliie · 26/07/2025 12:10

I would steam clean it

IrisPallida · 26/07/2025 13:58

I have many viscose (including viscose Seasalt) dresses and I always wash at 40 degrees. The important thing is to put the wet item carefully on a hanger and dry it on the line or somewhere warmish in Winter. The viscose will feel 'hard' when wet and may even appear shrunk, but will soften back to normal as it dries. I never have to iron it unless the hem needs smoothing. I have NEVER known a viscose dress to actually shrink. Viscose crepes, which this dress looks like, can be ironed to make the crepe smoother, but personally I prefer the hang and drape when it is crepey.

There is so much tosh written here about viscose including that it is a man-made fibre. It isn't, it is made of plant pulps & fibres - as someone pointed out, viscoses include Rayon, modal, lyocell & bamboo.

Random thought but Seasalt Everglow sounds like a fabulous leading character name for a story lol.

Any advice please When my mother died 6 years ago ai inherited &100,00 from her estate.

Ive never had this much money before usually over spending. My family said spend it all on what you want don’t save any
i friend of mine with a young family wondered if I could help out with credit card debt Gradually over the years I have given him over £10 thousand pounds
I am now retired and money is tight Would I be be able to rightly request some return of money to me

Frillysweetpea · 27/07/2025 22:55

I find viscose readily comes back to size when steam ironed - it just doesnt like being overdried initially as it makes all the threads contract really tightly.

Frillysweetpea · 27/07/2025 23:00

I think you're on the wrong thread but if you've given money away without a formal loan agreement you don't have a leg to stand on, I'm afraid. I'm assuming you still have 90K unless you've not told the whole story? That's a bigger cushion than many retirees.

SleepyLlamaFace · 28/07/2025 20:19

Just to update, dress arrived this morning, I've put it through a hand-wash wool cycle, line dried, very gentle iron and it's absolutely fine - fits as it did pre-wash, fabric hasn't done anything weird! X

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 28/07/2025 21:23

You've washed it before you've worn it?

Love this 😂 Pot, kettle, black! Hope you found the right thread 😍

You've washed it before you've worn it?

Lots of people do. I think it’s bonkers. 🤷‍♀️

Neveranynamesleft · 28/07/2025 22:08

Nobody I know washes new things before wearing either. Waste of time and energy if you ask me.

You and me both!

spoonbillstretford · 29/07/2025 05:57

I never hand wash or dry clean clothes. Anything has to fend for itself in the washing machine.

You've washed it before you've worn it?

Yep, hadn't realised that was unusual until now! :)

That gives me confidence, thank you! I think the pink will get more use if I know it’s easy to clean.
