Rainhat/waterproof hat

Does anyone have a rainhat they like wearing? I've always had coats with hoods but I find myself getting a bit weirdly claustrophobic in them now! I have big hair so I've always been put off hats because they flatten it, but the older I get the more I just want to be dry and comfortable...but also not like I'm at an Oasis gig. Does such a thing exist?!

I've seen a waxed cotton headscarf that I really like - it has a nice vintage glamour vibe. Unfortunately it was from Plumo and cost £98 so that was that.

Here's the link just in case anyone has seen anything similar. I'm thinking of trying to make one.

I’ve got this one because it covers my hair at the back!
I was sick of trying to carry stuff, lap top bag, umbrella etc.

glamorous it is not but it does the job!

This is gorgeous but you're right, £98 feels excessive... Plumo does some lovely stuff. I also wonder how much of my hair it would effectively/consistently cover though .

@rockstarshoes that's a bit too sou'wester for me I'm afraid but I'm glad you've found something that works for you!

@Steelworks I'll be honest, I don't know how I feel about those. They're a bit Chatsworth Game Fair 😁

That's my dream hat for when I am dragged off on holiday in 35 degrees. If I could uproot a tree and carry it with me I would. This looks like the next best option .

Same Stripeysockspots! But I feel the OP is looking for something with a bit more edge 😄

Hahaha @WrinklesShminkles - to be fair, that does have a hell of a lot of edge 😂

I'm an all weather dog walker and got a leather "outbacker" type hat at a horse event once, it was the best £20 I've ever spent. It's very well used and battered, comfy, incredibly waterproof and best of all it doesn't crush my hair.

deeahgwitch · 22/07/2025 18:43

The RainHat Collection look gorgeous and I like the Lighthouse ones too - I have 2 very similar to them.
Jack Murphy do a great hat but more for winter - the Boston felt hat.
I have it and it’s great in the rain and keeps its shape. It has been much admired.
They also do the waterproof Malvern. Very similar to the Lighthouse hat.
Apologies I can’t do links but some nice Mumsnetter might do them for me please.

Rina66 · 22/07/2025 18:57

I have an M & S one from a few years ago, it’s great, I’ll see if I can find it on Vinted!

Is it just me or does this one have a bit of a Handmaids Tale vibe?

Rina66 · 22/07/2025 19:55

It’s this one….

Thanks @Rina66 - I don't dislike that but I think I would have hat hair after about 11 seconds (I have curly hair)...but I guess that's going to be my problem with any hats!

I stood in a queue in torrential rain the other day with an old baseball cap on underneath my hood and I have to say, the peak was very useful for keeping my face dry and enabling me to see - I know this may be obvious to some people 😳😁

I actually clip my hair up under hats, with small bull dog type clips, then you take the hat off, clips out, quick shake of the hair, no hat hair! Sometimes under wedding hats, I wear a roller in my top layer

NashEnquirer · 23/07/2025 10:29

I'd love to be able to do that @Rina66 but I have a massive head so wouldn't have space for a clip as well...it was embarrassing as a small child to always need the adult helmets when horse-riding! I've passed it on to one of my kids too...

I like that in the olive, @lennonj , thank you.

Thank you @BestIsWest - ideally I'd like a packable/squashable one, although I had one similar to the one you've posted years ago (when I lived a more rural life!) and it was very effective because of the wide brim.
