Safari Wardrobe

Hi everyone. I am off on safari (Kenya) in February and have recieved guidance about what I should be packing. Ignoring the fact I am only allowed 15K including hand luggage and I am not very good at travelling light, I am also not very good at dressing neutrally as most of my clothes are bright - but apparently not great for wild animals! Any suggestions on things I could wear that I am likely to wear again!

Even fancy resorts are very casual. You will need layers as it is early starts and can be chilly also for the evening game drives but it warms up during the day. Many resort will include laundry so you don’t need as many duplicates. Sturdy shoes/trainers or boots for climbing in and out of vehicles. Wear these on flight so they don’t impact luggage allowance, maybe take an additional lighter weight pair for evening

I took 2 zip through fleeces and a light sweater (can be layered if chilly), small selection of T-shirts and 2 pairs chinos/walking trousers. Plus a blouse or two for evenings. Underwear, swimwear etc. A cosy wrap is useful, and a lightweight waterproof or showerproof jacket. Sunglasses and sunscreen

Camera! Phone and battery pack. Anti mosquito stuff

it will be amazing

this looks helpful as a starting point @ClickClackClock not bright though 😞

Do stick to the rules about not wearing bright colours. Otherwise, just think comfort - you will need layers, coz the early mornings are cold. So take a fleece and a beanie hat.
Your 15k will be more than ample, as camps all offer laundry as part of the price, so T shirts and undies can be washed. Other than that, 2 pairs of trousers and 2 or 3 linen shirts will be ample. Couple of thin dresses or light trousers/tops for evenings. Swimsuit. Sun hat. One pair of sturdy/walking shoes for game drives, plus one pair light shoes or sandals for in camp.
Don't bother with jewellery or expensive watches. Or make up. You will be woken up at 5am, so you won't want to faff about.
It was 10 years ago, but safari was the best holiday we've ever had - amazing.

I bought some linen shirts from primark - in neutral colours and wore them as layers. The heat with a linen shirt over a vest top felt comfortable.

I'd include shorts and casual t shirts for when it's warm, if you usually wear these. Binoculars for each person it just 1 between 2. A small rucksack for water, muzzle spray etc when on drives. I needed a sports bra in Tanzania!

Wilma55 · 17/07/2025 16:51

Sports bra as the game drives can be bumpy!

Something with sleeves and something with long legs so you do not get bitten
Something to wear on cold early starts- like a hoodie or jumper
Sturdy shoes
Beige
Stuff to lounge about/ sunbathe/ swim in for during day- shorts, t shirts, tops etc
At our place people changed in the evening - so maybe a couple of dresses that can pack without creasing badly but casual.

Thanks all, just have to get out of the typical holiday clothes mindset!

Shirts and leggings or a dress over leggings and cardi or jumper for the cold early starts and colder evenings

LunaTheCat · 20/07/2025 12:25

I am going in 5 weeks!
I started making a list before Christmas when I booked.
i would add
-summer had protect sun .. I read take 2 as they get easily blown off or one with tie under chin
-wool beanie early am game drives
-gloves
one lightweight but warm wool scarf
-light scarf - to tie down sunhat
-dresses .. easier than separates as need carry less so I am taking 3 silk dresses (courtesy trade me ) . I will wash in my room and hang up.. they dry really quickly
-I bought 2 merino t shirts - light and was easily
-pair shorts
2 pairs trousers.. one Patagonia outdoors pair and lighter pair that can be dressed up or down
-some trainers wearing drives
-birksensock bostons is mocha suede
-pair nicer light sandals evenings
-swimsuit, goggles )lodges I am staying have pools)
-a lightweight but warm cardi and a cashmere hersey
-a sleeveless puffer
-a light raincoat.

What colours are best for a safari? We will be going next year and I'm going through my summer wardrobe wondering what will suit. I've a lot more grey, navy and black than tan or green.
