Looking forward to the Autumnal clothes arriving in the shops! What is everyone looking forward to buying? I am after some dresses/tights and soft jumpers!

I have just ordered a wool gilet that I have had a tab open for about two years. I haven’t seen much new come out online yet for this A/W.

I fancy an ivory or winter white skirt but I’m a bit of a messy girl in all honesty so it doesn’t sound like a great idea does it?

Possibly a cashmere bandana.

Some nice colours Damson Madder pre-fall. Red with burgundy, cobalt blue, some greens stood out to me.

TheLeadbetterLife · 20/07/2025 15:48

There are some leaf greens and russet reds about, which suit me, and I love to wear cobalt blue, so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up, though I don't need much / anything really. Maybe a new jumper.

I've been soldiering on with tights all my life, but have finally realised that my decades-long search for comfortable, breathable yet elegant tights is a fool's errand. The reason I have so many criteria for the perfect tights is that I don't like wearing tights. I hate constriction, I hate wearing nylon, I hate having to wear bodies or an extra pair of knickers over them so they don't fall down. I hate having to be careful not to bump into things.

Last week I threw out a drawer full of worn-once tights, all with holes in because I'm clumsy and tights are rubbish (sadly along with a new-ish top that I didn't realise was in the pile). My tights-requiring skirts are now on Vinted.

From now on, I will spend the Winter in jeans and flannel bags, with lovely socks.

Cantonet · 20/07/2025 15:49

I've bought some Autumnal items in the sales. I very rarely buy summer items at this stage.

A brown suede fringed jacket from And/Or.
Cheesecloth shirts in Rust & Khaki from New Look.
Chocolate brown satin trousers from Uniqlo.Admittedly not in the sales.
Cream Uniqlo Puffertech oversized jacket - Uniqlo sale.
Uniqlo J W Anderson navy denim oversized shirt in sale.
All will be Autumn/Winter wears for me.

@TheLeadbetterLife during my London professional life I wore Wolford tights and was perfectly happy with them. Once I left London Wolford started to seem unreasonably expensive, so I experimented with other brands, including every luxe iteration M&S could think of - and decided I didn’t like tights any more. So I stopped wearing them.

That must be about 15 years ago, now … They simply stopped existing for me. In the warm months - bare legs; in the colder season the best pure wool or wool blend socks I could get. (I tend to wear either mules or boots so have never tried those awful little invisible socks people used to wear with trainers.)

Apart from men’s outfitters offerings I really like the colours and form of Margaret Howell’s woollen socks, and find they slightly influence the colours of the rest of my wardrobe. I’m currently repeatedly scrolling the site, waiting for the new Winter collection.

Yes this is pretty much how it's gone for me, except I was never a London professional.

I've tried so many tights brands—cheap, mid-range, expensive—they all end up with holes and are annoying to wear. I tried and tried to find cotton or bamboo tights that weren't thick and opaque (which isn't really my style), but it's sweaty nylon or thick knits only. So I end up hardly ever wearing my Winter skirts, just can't be fagged. I prefer trousers anyway, as I walk with huge, Farmer Giles strides.

I love good wool, bamboo, or organic cotton socks. I don't know why I've been fighting this for so long.

I'm heading in the other direction from @TheLeadbetterLife as I'm planning to move on to skirts, not always or forever but just some of the time. I've been wearing wide leg trousers and barrel leg jeans for so long now and this summer - although I've dabbled in flares and enjoyed them - I've started feeling the tiniest bit ....restless.

Dresses rarely fit me properly unless they're in that stretchy jersey fabric so skirts it will be. I shouldn't need to buy any as I already have several I like that have been waiting patiently for an outing. Note I said 'shouldn't need to' not that I wouldn't.

The tights business is something I will have to navigate - last time I was into skirts I mostly wore them with opaques but I'll see what else is out there.

I need quite a bit this year, a combination of weight loss and a couple of low buy years. So I need new boots, a new everyday coat (casual enough for weekend, smart enough for office), one or two new jumpers and some work trousers. Plus new loungewear which I am quite excited about - nice stuff not bits I’ve picked up in Asda that make me look like a toddler.

trickiest thing will be coat. I have a formal wool coat when I need to look properly smart but I want something which will be a bit weatherproof, with a hood, not black or dark navy, a bit of shape. I know Mumsnet doesn’t like the word frumpy but that is what I am trying to avoid - I want a kind of casual relaxed but practical as I battle the rain from car park to office or out for a walk. But with a waist as I’m short and curvy. Easy right.

I’m coveting all the plums and damson colours

BurningTheToast · 21/07/2025 16:17

I'm another one who needs to buy quite a bit due to weight loss. Vinted has been a good friend in the interim stage but I want to buy some specific new things.

I'm after a pair of black stompy elastic-sided boots (think Claudia in Traitors). I've seen a pair but they were £1100 from Prada so need a more realistic option!

I'm also planning on a good oversized v-neck cashmere jersey for luxurious working from home. And I'd like to try a cashmere cardigan as a top with skirts etc as I got into wearing jersey maxis last winter.

I need a winter coat - probably navy or blackberry end of burgundy, wool, below hip length but not full length IYSWIM. Might look at tweed from Walker Slater as I'm an Edinburgh girl!

Summer is not my season sartorially and I'm so looking forward to getting my woollens back out!

henlake7 · 21/07/2025 19:16

I dont think I need much, Im just looking forward to getting my autumn stuff out of storage though.
I have horrendous varicose veins so can only really wear maxi's and trousers during the summer so Im looking forward to getting out my miniskirts and dresses with thick tights again.😀

Only thing I really would like is some coloured and patterned tights to spiff things up abit!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 21/07/2025 19:29

Yes, I’ve just today received a cherry red ribbed merino jumper from Mango via Vinted
i overheat so layer in the winter

Notellinganyone · 21/07/2025 19:48

@TheLeadbetterLife @ColdHenrietta - I have 6 pairs of black Wolford black velvet de luxe opaques - replace when a pair goes. Absolutely love them and I actually look forward to tights season!

ColdHenrietta · 21/07/2025 20:33

That used to be me! Exactly those.

Pretty much the same for me so will be following with interest. I am short and lost weight. My winter jackets are about 10 different puffa jackets in different colours!

Me too. I usually replenish my Wolford tights when there’s an offer on. I also have a few pairs of the Brora cashmere blend lace tights which I really like but don’t find them to be hard wearing. I think they make have replaced with a wool version. Wolford have some good discounts on seasonal designs in their sale, and I also have a few of those ready for right occasion.

bumsntums · 24/07/2025 10:13

@myladyjane I bought a raincoat from Protected Species having seen them recommended on MN. I'm 5'3" 12/14 hourglass for reference. It's waterproof but without that outdoor wear feel. It's more drapey and feels like normal fabric. Mine isn't padded or warm, but scrunches up and doesn't crease & is (by far) the nicest waterproof I've ever owned.

myladyjane · 25/07/2025 08:24

@bumsntums thank you! I was racking my brain trying to remember Protected Species! V good to hear re fit - I am the same height and a 14/16 at the moment so good to hear it works.
