I have a family wedding to attend at the end of September. Whilst the service is outdoors, the reception will be inside.

The problem is the dress code - no white or cream (that's OK, I wouldn't anyway) but more seriously no rusty reds or forest greens. I'm a red head and those are MY colours...!

So I need to find something outside my usual colour palate and I'm really struggling. I look deathly ill in all shades of blue and yellow and any "cold" colours generally don't work on me. I can wear black if it's not solid but I'm not sure if that's OK nowadays

I'm 61, 5ft 9 and a size 10. It's got to be a dress as trousers are never long enough, ditto jump suits. Budget up to around £300 or so but less would be good!

Any help gratefully received as I'm starting to panic a bit!

When a dress code is this ridiculous, I’d really be tempted to think ‘fuck it’ and just wear what I want.

Bronze, Teal and there are certain shades of mauve that can look great on redheads

heldinadream · 16/07/2025 06:44

Does no rusty reds and forest greens mean you can wear other reds and greens? Because if it does surely there's a colour in that range you can wear/find?

Seems an insane instruction. Banning specific colours like that? Why?

How about aubergine? I also think red heads look beautiful in warmer shades of lilac/ mauve

Oilofeveningprimrose · 16/07/2025 09:40

Maybe those are the wedding/bridesmaid colours, it is very specific

I also suggest looking for purple. Dusty lilac, jewel purple, or even a more warm, Tyrian-like one if that suits you better.

It’s a bit tricky finding a dress as I don’t know what your usual style is (sleek and minimalist? feminine and dramatic?) but these are just some of the options currently online. The Hobbs ones were all available in size 10 when I filtered.

Wow that's prescriptive 😳

What about a lighter mint green or a sort of citrine? That can look great with red hair.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/07/2025 09:57

Ignore. They can hardly refuse you entry if you turn up in the wrong colours (weddings are supposed to be accessible to all, in case someone has "just impediment to why X and Y cannot marry").

To answer the questions -

Unfortunately for various reasons I do need to comply with the colour scheme. I'm not sure how close to the wind I can sail on the red. It's the warmer rusty reds that work on me. Blue toned ones look dreadful.

My usual style is somewhat alternative but not one for frills and flounces as a rule. I've seen some gorgeous dresses online but all the ones I'm drawn to are dark green! I want to tread the line between safe and boring but not too OTT. I generally buy clothes with a bit of an edge. I love many of the Disturbia dresses for example but the style is either too young or the print too out there for this wedding. One that does hit both boxes is of course dark green!

Purple is a good call though - I am open to being pushed out of my comfort zone!

Have a browse on The Outnet, their customer service and sizing advice are great. The Marchesa Notte probably is not on brief but would look stunning on a redhead!

I don"t know if those purple dresses are the right "colours" for the women wearing them but as actual colours top and bottom right are truly horrible.
