'Roaring Twenties' fancy dress for an hourglass

I'm going to a 'Roaring Twenties' party this summer, themed fancy dress mandatory. Please can you help me plan my outfit?

I am 6', size 14, sometimes 16 to accommodate a large bust, fairly exaggerated hourglass body shape. I look absolutely dreadful in 'flapper' style dresses and categorically will not wear one. My legs need to be covered. Considering some kind of tailoring or tuxedo but it could be quite hot.

I usually love a bit of fancy dress but I'm stumped on this one.

Cricket whites type look? Linen trousers, blouse, white tank top, boater hat? Ready a quick game or a punt along the river, what, what?!

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 15/07/2025 13:02

Ooh @Talltreesbythelake you might be onto something here - a sort of Sebastian Flyte / Bertie Wooster vibe?

Maybe some Oxford bags. Are they 20s?

Pyjama suits were fashionable in the 20s—article here explaining the trend: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35427892

This would be a perfect look for a Summer party.

A head teacher has urged parents not to wear pyjamas on the school run. But they were once the height of fashion.

How about going as Amelia Earhart in her 1928 Atlantic crossing outfit?

Sorry, wrong thread! I’ve asked MNHQ to remove the above.

Amelia Earhart is a great shout.

I had no idea about the pyjama suits and they are very cool but are they sufficiently recognisable as 1920s? I don’t want to have to deliver a fashion history lecture.

Google mermaid dress 1920s. Definitely designed for an hour glass figure. There are some with sort of art deco type patterns

I love the palazzo pants! But if you do want a dress, not all 20s dresses were knee length, tasselled flapper numbers. A longer dress with a little cloche hat, drop earrings and some court shoes could work. Eg this Rachel dress (comes in different patterns) from One Hundred Stars could be styled in a Roaring 20s way.

I’m a shorter top heavy hourglass, but I’d channel Mama Morton in Chicago’s stage look if I had to go

I'm not as tall as you but a size 14 and quite buxom. I bought this dress for a 1920s do...
It was really cheap but I felt great in it. It was a bit too big so I sewed some darts in at the bust and waist (on the under fabric - the outer layer is mesh which expands or contracts as necessary, so it fitted perfectly).

I teamed it with some 20s style jewellery and a jewelled headband.

A lot of the reproduction “1920s” dresses are actually much more fitted than real 1920s dresses were. Probably because they’ve realised true 1920s straight up and down styles are unflattering on most modern figures.

For example https://uk.babeyond.com/collections/fitted-dresses/products/1920s-mermaid-maxi-dress

I’d just wear something like this, it will look authentic enough, nobody’s going to say oi your dress is too fitted.

Thank you for all of these fabulous ideas. I’m definitely leaning towards some palazzo pants. The rope of pearls is an excellent idea!
