I have £2k for a beautiful bag - which one, though?

I am fortunate enough to have been given £2k by a very dear relative and instructed to treat myself to a new handbag.

This will be a treasured item (because of the person I will always associate with it) and a massive, unprecedented splurge.

So . . . what do I get? I want beautiful quality rather than the usual brand names . . . and not a work bag, as I work from home. A small crossbody, probably. Any suggestions? Thank you!

What a waste of two grand. 😭

I think there are much nicer bags that aren't so expensive. I don't think much of that puzzle bag. But if it's a particular special bag that costs £2k and you want that bag fair enough. But not to rule out lovely bags because they don't cost £2k.

I'd buy one from fatface and stick the rest in my savings

Misses the point completely.😖

It happens on every handbag thread!

I'd put some of the £2k towards train travel to London, Manchester or Edinburgh or somewhere else with a few big department stores like Selfridges, Harrods and some independent retailers and go browse in person and see what you like. You can then order online if you don't want to commit then and there.

PeonyBulb · 14/07/2025 16:55

I’d just go shopping and see what I liked

I wouldn’t be asking anyone else because it’s such a personal choice

What were the circumstances surroundiig the gift?
Had you expressed a desire for such a gift?
Are you in a good financial situation otherwise?

It sounds strange gifting money with such a caveat.

Not judging, just curious.

none of your business

Loewe Puzzle.
Book a cheap flight to Madrid or Barcelona.
Call Loewe in advance and get an appointment and tell them the exact model and colour.
Take your passport to the appointment and ask for a tax refund
Validate the tax forms at the airport when leaving the EU.

Given the price in Spain and the tax refund you can get a Puzzle Small (not small at all, the one that is £2,700 here) for £2,050 approx.
Plus the flight but if you do it in the context of a weekend abroad… it does not hurt.

My friend has this gorgeous Loewe tote bag and I’m so envious! It’s really gorgeous and quite practical. Some change from £2k too!

On my wish list!
It’s so gorgeous in real life!

Yes! Head on in to central London (St James/Mayfair) and have a good browse!!
Look in the little arcades and find something truly special - not just from a website! Find somewhere that maybe embroiders initials in the lining or something to make it super personal?

BrillantBriony · 14/07/2025 20:46

Depends what you’re looking for. Do you want a work bag, or something that just comes out for evenings or maybe daytime weekend brunches, and lunches.

You could maybe get two bags one daytime and one special occasion - Polene have beautiful, yet simple and practical bags, they’re like mini artworks, and very Parisan and chic.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a YSL for an evening bag. If you want a handbag that’s going to go up in value then definitely Dior The Lady, Chanel 2.55, Gucci Jackie. For the 2.55 and The Lady go to their flagship store they’ll have bags in the storeroom that won’t be on display that will have variations in leather, colour, ‘embossei’ on the metal straps and other detailing etc…

Enjoy the experience, it’s a lovely one.

I love Dolce & Gabbana Sicily Bags.

I wish I hadn't clicked on that link - they're beautiful, especially the stupidly impractical little blue and white embroidered ones.

OP - don'y buy a Chloe. My Marcie really hasn't lasted like it should.

I would buy something amazing from Fortuny.

Cost per wear:

if you are lucky enough to buy a classic bag for 2k, and use it every third day for 10 years it’s £2 per wear.

I got a Bottega bag 24 years ago…. still going although it’s a bit more dressy. Very unique. Paid £400 recently saw one for £900 pre-loved. Not selling as I just love it!!!

I have the Lou Medium YSL Camera Bag with Pocket in Quilted Leather with black YSL on the black leather and it is perfect. Great size, can fit a little more than a standard going out bag, I can get a kindle, phone, wallet, sunglasses and makeup comfortably. Love the black on black, it looks more understated and classy in my opinion. Enjoy your new bag whatever it is!

I really like Launer, they have some great new colourways.

I’m no handbag expert but when I saw the one you linked in your post it reminded me of the bags the late Queen Elizabeth II used to wear so I just did a quick search on Google and can confirm this was her preferred handbag brand.

I got the shoes to match as well. Can’t walk in them now. It’s in my letter of wishes to be buried in them, though!!!

I think a medium size Hermes Evelyne would be a good buy ( I’d love one 😀 ) but I think it’s more than £2000

If you buy a bag from a store with a loyalty programme you’ll get money (well in the form of a gift certificate) back, so I’d recommend researching which has the best scheme. I like Liberty & the staff there are lovely.

This. A friend bought some jewellery from Dior, direct from their concession in a major department store. Alongside the usual champagne offered during the process, she gets invited to all their little client soirées (and brings me). I’m contemplating a purchase for a major birthday this year, so will be maxing out all the freebies plus the store loyalty programme. Just makes the purchase a more special event.

In terms of bags, I only have one luxury item; a pre-loved Fendi, bought via Vestiare. I do secretly hanker after a Dior book tote though; £2k might just cover it.
