One dress for both these occasions?

Two occasions in September, I wonder if a dress exists that could cover both.

First is a work party, it won't be formal or really have a dress code, but I suspect a lot of women will probably wear dresses with trainers or sandals.

Second is a wedding - church ceremony and then reception in a local sports facility - I guess fairly standard wedding vibes.

I wouldn't want to be overdressed at the work party, and would want to wear trainers there, so maybe it's a big ask....but maybe a fairly simple dress could work for the wedding if it was the right one? I'd much prefer natural fibres. I'm size 10-12 and mid 40s.

I always think about the S&B pages when people on other thread try to claim that MNers aren't any wealthier than the average person.

It's true that the OP didn't state a budget and she can in fact afford quite a lot, but it always makes me laugh that high street isn't the default as I've never shopped differently. Before MN I wasn't even aware of things like Boden.

Re prices I'm a huge fan of Palava , Sister Jane and Joannie. Palava has one tiny shop in London and is stocked by a small number of independents; Sister Jane has one shop in London and Harvey Nicks and John Lewis stock a very small selection. Joannie as far as I know is all online. So none are "high street". What's wrong with suggesting non- high street?

Price wise their dresses are cheaper than Hobbs and Phase Eight. Style wise- (in my opinion) there's no contest. And big plus for me they don't sell dresses that scream "wedding guest/MOTB/MOTG"

"What's wrong with suggesting non- high street?"

Nothing. I was just noting that I would have expected high street to be the default.

I'm not sure what point you're making.

But isn’t the whole point of a Style and Beauty board to share information on places / resources that people might not already be aware of?

Can be, but it can also be useful (even more so I'd say) to point to something in a shop that the OP can easily go to.

But surely as BeetledBrow pointed out there can't be many posters who haven't heard of the usual suspects she listed?

And as for easily going to a shop, unless a poster lives in a city the physical shops might not exist anyway.

MyNamedoesntWork · 12/07/2025 11:09

Have a look at Hope & Ivy

BeetledBrow · 12/07/2025 11:30

From what I’ve seen, even if the physical shop exists it won’t have the exact size or colour of the item the poster needs. The assistant (a rare beast …) is likely to tell you to go online to get it.

And anyway it’s so limiting to only shop within walking or reasonable driving distance when so much more is accessible online nowadays.

(There’s nothing more frustrating than an OP who resists all suggestions and insists posters tell her what is in the shops in her local shopping mall.)

So I ordered various dresses to try. The one that fits best and seems most flattering is this https://www.nobodyschild.com/products/navy-printed-nia-midi-dress-d253750blu? Just not sure if it's a bit too casual? It does hang very nicely.
