Hi,

Can anyone recommend some tried and tested gradual self tan for a newbie? I’ve been googling it but thought personal recommendations might be best!

Thanks

Dove summer revived, I am pale but get the dark one because you only have to apply once for a good result.

I’m also using Dove at the moment, forgot I had it so it’s probably been lurking in a cupboard for a while but it’s taken the pastiness out of my legs!

Dove here too. It will come off on towels but it washes out. I use the light to medium pretty much every other day

good friend recommended tax luxe gradual when I admired how tanned she looked. Only just got some, tried it oblast night fronts of my legs and arms look gf toy sun kissed but I’ve left a streak on my lower left leg. Shall exfoliate and hope to do better next time.

The colour is brilliant. I’m getting prepared for a weekend in the country in a few weeks where fingers crossed shall wear my creme chino shorts to devastating effect (obvs not with my natural pasty blue white legs ?

The Dove Summer Revived in medium to dark as recommended by others is really good. My teen DD is using it and it looks nice on her, she's never used fake tan before but seems to be having no trouble getting a nice result with it. Between us we have used about 8 tubes of it so far this year!

I use garnier or dove - both in the lighter formula. I prefer the gradual tan and colour of garnier but it smells like fake tan. Dove is less forgiving for streaks but smells better in the first couple of days. Dove also only needs one application for Garniers 2 to get the same result. Dove tends to last longer too - I can do it just once a week tbh!

I am pale and don't do very well with fake tan but used bondi sands gradual tan and it's been good. I have a big bottle that has lasted ages, although dont use it all the time. This one, it's on offer in Asda.

I love the Dove medium to dark! I had never tried self tanning at all until this year and I love it now. I’m not religious with it, I find I can see a difference after one application but looks best after two.

TheWibble · 09/07/2025 20:33

Another recommendation for dove, but I like the mousse format, rather than the lotion. Not as sticky, and has never ever streaked on me.

deeahgwitch · 09/07/2025 20:35

I’d love one that dried quickly

Spypatrol · 09/07/2025 20:38

Palmer's butter. I use either that or Garnier. Not a fan of dove.

brushthepot · 09/07/2025 20:41

I am the colour of milk. I got Dove summer revived in light and needed two applications before it was really noticeable. I thought sod it and bought the medium to dark which I was really happy with.

Best thing is if you exfoliate your body in the shower you can see the tan washing off a little and it fades so if you over do it you don't have to panic. I like the smell of it, it dries quite quickly and I am a convert. Easy to top it up too.

desiderata328 · 09/07/2025 21:59

Gatineau is the best I’ve ever tried.

Coco9910 · 09/07/2025 22:09

Thanks for all the replies! Lots of votes for Dove so think that will be a good starting point.

Next question..do I apply with a mitt or ky bare hand? 🤔😅

I use Bondi Sands gradual tanning milk - the smell is much better than Dove and it gives a really lovely colour after a few uses. You can then just top up once or twice a week.

Nightmanagerfan · 10/07/2025 08:06

I just use my bare hands (but remember to wash afterwards!)

maldivemoment · 10/07/2025 08:15

Dove every time. As others have said, wash hands thoroughly after use. ( I tend to use a drop of exfoliator on my hands too)
