Button-up shirts - still stylish?

I recently started a new job with a slightly less-casual general style of dress. I'm thinking forward to autumn/winter in terms of my wardrobe.

Are button-up shirts (e.g. oxford shirts) still stylish? On their own and/or under a woollen jumper? I'm thinking to wear with wide-leg pants.

I know you should wear what you like and 'fashion' doesn't matter etc. but I like to be not entirely devoid of style!

When you say slightly less casual do you mean smart casual or actually formal? Do the men wear open necked shirts and chinos, or suits? If the former then shirts and jumpers should be fine. If the latter, you’re going to need jackets - in which case your choice of shirt / top underneath is trickier.

I’d say at the moment shirts look better worn casually. With a suit or jacket a plainer sort of top, or a blouse looks less stuffy. Or a silk rather than cotton shirt. (Unless you’re in court.)

But other people may think differently!

(I love shirts and wear them all the time, but I have changed how I wear them.)

I think it depends on your office. At my place, this look was very common 15 years ago, but you don’t see anyone wearing shirts and jumpers any more. Men do sometimes, but it’s less common for women.

A tank top (knitted vest) rather than a jumper?

Shirts are a classic office item. They're super easy to wear too.

I think of them as a classic basic, and the fashion comes from other elements of your outfit e.g. the shoes, shape of trousers

Thank you everyone! Just to clarify, it's more smart casual - men don't wear suits, but neither do they wear jeans (they could at my old workplace) so somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for the various styling tips - I think I'll get one and give it a go, although maybe not wear it under a jumper by the sounds of it.

I'll definitely be wearing mine under a jumper when the weather/aircon requires it!

Or this - a good summer look:
