Everyday slim black trousers

Hello! I am really hoping you can help me. I’m not a big shopper but am trying to smarten up my everyday a bit and would love your help.

I’m looking for a slim fit, tapered, ankle grazing black trouser with a back elastic waistband and pockets. Not office smart - I want something interesting, with a bit of personality. If that’s possible!

I generally wear a size 16/18 in M&S jeans, and I generally wear black jeans every day. I like M&S ankle grazer tailored trousers but they’re smarter than I want here. I’m 5’7” with long legs.

I WFH but am increasingly having client meetings. My work is really laid back so something at the smart end of casual that I could also wear to do the shopping, run errands etc - would help me feel a little bit more put together.

I have a pair I love, from Sainsbury’s - but they were from a charity shop six years ago so I’ve no idea how old they actually are. They’re made of a thin synthetic material that almost feels scrunched up. It keeps the texture after washing - so it has that personality thing I mentioned above. They’re also a size 14 and fit me well but I am not a size 14!

Not really sure on budget. I don’t spend much on clothes but am willing to for something that will last.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks @Seeingadistance - I will check them out when I’m in M&S this week but I’m not sure they will work.

I want something with a bit more structure than jersey and I don’t get on with drawstrings at all. I can be clumsy and they get caught on things too easily. And I really hate anything tight around my ankles or wrists. I didn’t realise these were non negotiables but they are. Thanks for helping me narrow it down further.

Must they be black? It’s such a deadening colour at this time of year. (Unless you’re in the funeral business or appearing in court via Zoom of course!)

Community Clothing has some well made trousers suitable for a smart casual work wardrobe:

Hey @ColdHenrietta yes - must be black. I am a not very ex goth and it’s the only colour I wear at all. And it means everything matches! 🧛 🖤 I do love community clothing - I’ve been tempted by their chinos but want that back elastic as I’m losing weight slowly but surely

I’ve got some slim tailored trousers from Next that have back elastic.

EsmeNoteSpelling · 07/07/2025 20:21

Thanks @TheFormidableMrsC - do you have a link? The ones I’ve seen in store are all ‘office smart’ which is smarter than I want. I wonder if I’m looking for a unicorn

I’m not primarily looking for work. I’m looking up to smarten up my everyday look, a step up from jeans.

Being suitable for my meetings as well is a bonus but my industry is very casual - band t shirts and trainers are common - so ‘office smart’ is way over the top.

Stretchy, slim, pockets ....I know they look quite old.fashioned but I have these for work, I bought a shorter version so the are slightly cropped and they feel quite elegant

EsmeNoteSpelling · 07/07/2025 22:11

Ooh @Beebopwasthebest they are very much a possible! Thank you! I will try them
