Why are jeans so long

HorrorFan81 · 06/07/2025 22:18

Ok so I lived through the 90s when my jeans dragged on the floor, got all ripped and tatty and soaked up water to the knees if it rains. Is that back again? Half the time when I try on jeans in a shop that only carry one length, that length is LONG. I am taller than average for a woman so don't understand who is buying all these jeans with 4 extra inches of flappy material. Have posted a pic from today - for anyone buying these how are you wearing / styling them? Do you just accept they will get ripped to shreds at the bottom?

I bought a few pairs recently, 29 inside leg is usually fairly standard. I got marks, Tesco. Mint velvet and gap in the last month. At 5 ft 5 29 is perfect for me. Asda do so e at 27 if you need shorter.

TheOGCCL · 06/07/2025 22:52

I usually have to get looser styles shortened. But too short is not right either

TizerorFizz · 06/07/2025 23:06

M&S short is quite short! They have lots of styles.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/07/2025 23:17

How tall is ‘taller than average’? And do you have a long torso or long legs?

I’m 5’7” and usually have to go for long rather than regular.

I'm 5.5 and 29 inches too. I think we are the UK standard. My feet are 5.5 E which is a right pain.

Devilsmommy · 06/07/2025 23:28

I'm 5'7 and I go for 32/33 but I've got long legs. How tall are you?

I'm 5 ft 7, with long legs and a short torso, and find most jeans too long for me - not as bad as in OP's example, but too long for my liking.

BusterGonad · 07/07/2025 05:17

I absolutely love it, I'm 5ft 10in and I've recently bought some great jeans from Mango, they are actually the perfect length for me. I couldn't be happier.

Clingfilm · 07/07/2025 05:57

I've found the same and I'm not short!
My solutions:
Wear platformy trainers.
Cut the ends off so they fray
...but yeah not sure what you're meant to do, I'm too old to wear the puddle sponges of my youth 🤣

LavenderBlue19 · 07/07/2025 06:03

Can you get them taken up? A dry cleaners will usually do it - jeans are trickier than normal trousers but it's not impossible.

The only place I've had jeans as long as you've shown is Zara. I'm 5ft 5 so very average, and standard jeans usually fit my legs fine. I prefer them grazing the floor to the weird ankle length/crop jeans that float slightly too high for my 90s sensibilities.

everymeeveryyou · 07/07/2025 06:41

I am 5’6” but long torso and short legs, not sure what my leg measurement is but I know it is shorter than average.
I have this problem all the time unless I buy a pair of cropped/petite trousers/jeans. One place I find impossible to believe anyone doesn’t need to get their jeans/trousers taken up from is Phase Eight. Even some of their petite range drags on the floor for me!
I have found a good seamstress who I use to take mine up but I always pre-wash before I take my stuff to her as I have had times when I have had pairs taken up to what looks like the correct length then they have shrunk significantly on the first wash.

ServusFidelis · 07/07/2025 06:42

I'm 5'9" and have returned 3 pairs of standard length jeans recently, all for being too long.
If I really really really really loved them, I might have considered paying to have them professionally altered... but I really resent the time, hassle and effort involved.

330ml · 07/07/2025 06:48

All the ones I have bought recently have been fine. If they weren’t I would just take them up.

TroysMammy · 07/07/2025 06:51

I'm short, just under 5ft and jeans and trousers that say short are anything but. I try to find ankle grazers for normal women.

gerispringer · 07/07/2025 06:52

I’m surprised people recommend “ getting them taken up”. - can no one sew these days? It’s actually quite easy to take jeans up, you do need a sewing machine for the perfect method and it takes about 15 minutes. Plenty of YouTube videos. If you haven’t got this basic skill then buy them at Uniqlo where they have an alteration service.

deedeemegadoodoo · 07/07/2025 07:10

20 odd years ago, I used to live in Spain. Shops like Zara all had longer legs and you could get them altered for free.

Lafufufu · 07/07/2025 07:12

I just buy at uniqlo now
They get altered for free

HorrorFan81 · 07/07/2025 07:14

I'm 5'6 so a bit above the average for a woman which is why I am surprised there are so many jeans that seem so long. These were 'regular' length in Next

Uniqlo is the other place that surprised me. They have so many jeans in stock but only one length and that length seems really long to me

I have a 33 inch inside leg and have a couple of pairs of wide leg jeans in a regular length, though I do think you are supposed to wear them dragging on the floor by a few inches. They come just above the floor on me with flat shoes.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 07/07/2025 07:17

You know what it is?

They’re trying to force us back into heels….😲

Hendil · 07/07/2025 07:19

Some Next jeans are very long, I have to order XL which is my correct size for 33" but also sometimes L and R which is a nuisance. Wide legs though, I usually just ditch XL.
I'm 5'10"

Hendil · 07/07/2025 07:22

I got some lovely wide leg cords from WhiteStuff in R length in the Jan sales. I nearly didn't try them on as I thought they would be too short.

evilharpy · 07/07/2025 07:27

I'm 5' 6" but long in the body and suddenly I seem to be having this problem with non-cropped wide leg jeans. I bought some recently from Tesco that I'm tripping over and others I've had to leave on the hanger as they were just ridiculous. Never a big fan of turning up jeans, the hems never look or sit quite right, so I'm going to chop the bottoms and fray them.

Hendil · 07/07/2025 07:34

Fortunately I have a Next delivery pass and a local store so can get an idea of size by one pair but if I was paying for delivery I would have to order both 12 and 14 in XL, L and R, my correct size is 14XL. Then shops moan about returns

NotMeNoNo · 07/07/2025 07:39

They need to be taken up to the right length (after washing). But few people can do very basic sewing now, was just the same last time around hence all the fraying and dragging in puddles.
