Which box colour will properly cover grey hair? L'Oreal Excellence Creme not working

I have thinning shoulder length light brown hair with a lot of white coming through at the front. I have been using L'Oreal Excellence Creme No. 6.0 light brown which claims to have 100% grey coverage but there are still some white hairs visible after I dye my hair which is annoying as I then have to use Colour WoW powder to disguise the white hair.

I want to completely cover the white hair and have multidimensional colour (not a flat processed dyed look if that makes sense). I can't afford the hair dresser as I'm having to colour every 4 weeks because of the white coming through.

What am I doing wrong? Would L'Oreal Prodigy Permanent Oil Hair Colour or Garnier Olia work better to cover the white hair? Any suggestions welcome!

Nice n easy root touch up. The normal dye is shit but the root touch up is excellent. It’s much thicker and comes with a brush to apply and you mix it in a little dish rather than a bottle. Takes 2 packs to do inch long roots, and I mix up half a pack to touch up sideburns in between, the brush is really precise. Amazon do a subscription on it so it’s £5 a box. I have mid brown hair with some grey and use shade 5 mid brown. It covers the grey completely and doesn’t fade.

I use the nice n easy semi permanent box dye. I have a lot of greys at the front and a few strands underneath. This always covers the grey and doesn't make them ginger like some dyes do.

How do you dye your hair. As the rest of my hair is already dyed, I only do the roots. I do it as a hairdresser would do it. I mix the dye in a bowl/mug. I then part my hair into many partings and brush the dye on to the roots with a hair dye brush.

Thanks for the tips on Nice n'Easy @kungfucow and @doneandone oneandone - I will try it out.

Just a bit of a heads up.

The Nice n Easy demi (the no ammonia lasts 24 shampoos one) has been discontinued where I live, so maybe stock up on a few boxes just incase.

I have been trawling discount shops to find some and none have my exact colour. I'm so frustrated about it.

@isthismylifenow I think they may have rebranded. I used to always be able to spot my colour by the pic on the front of the box until the last 2 boxes and they look completely different. I also noticed that the colour seems to last longer in that it doesn't go brassy on the ends when I'm due a touch up. I hope you manage to find the one you're looking for!

The Josh Wood blending brush root cover up is really good for finishing off or towards the end of a dye cycle when roots are coming through. You put it on when your hair is wet so when it dries, it feels the same as the rest of your hair, as opposed to the dirty, itchy feel you get with Color Wow powder. I have found it gives me two extra weeks between dyes, so saves a fortune over time.

Please can you post a pic of the new box.

I am thinking perhaps we haven't received the new version as yet, as all I can find now is Loreal Castings which seems similar. But my hair really likes the Clairol one.

But maybe I am looking so hard I have missed seeing the new version lol.

InjuryMyArse · 07/07/2025 08:53

@isthismylifenow I used to use that, but use Natural instincts demi permanent now. It's by Clarol so it's probably their rebrand.

InjuryMyArse · 07/07/2025 08:57

Op, a really good dye for the white hairs that won't cover is the Just for Men beard one. Just mix a tiny bit up and brush it over the white ones that haven't taken.

Thank you. I am not going mad, it does not seem to have reached our shores yet.

I can get so infuriated when they discontinue the good stuff, and in our case, do not replace it.

@isthismylifenow this is the colour that I use in the new box

I use Garnier Nutrisse and am seeing the greys through sooner these days. Can somebody explain how you only mix up half a bottle for touching up as I am unsure ... Doesn't the remaining part go funny or will I be able to use it a few weeks later still? How precise do I need to be with the proportions of developer and colour?

Don't mix the whole amounts. It won't keep.

Unscrew the developer bottle top.

I pour half the developer and half the colourant into a plastic bowl, mix it then put it on with a brush. I just guess half but I'm quite good at that. If you're not, you could measure for at least the first time you split it .

Make sure you put the caps back on tightly and keep them in the box for next time.

RaininSummer · 07/07/2025 22:22

Thank you for that explanation. Always wanted to give this try.

The Salon subscription is good.

L’Oréal Preference is a better dye for grey hair, than Excellence.

When Schwarzkopf stopped doing the hair colour mask which I found excellent for covering grey and being multitonel. I came on mumsnet to find an alternative. Someone suggested Poly Color by Schwarzkopf. I only use it on my roots like a touch up. Best thing is it costs about £2 from Home Bargains!
I have quite dark roots, but really white stripes at my temples. Nice and easy wasn’t working.
