A suit for me

OP posts:

I think there might have been a school disco in year 11 but my first 'formal' event was 6 form leavers in 2001 and I had a short blue sparkly dress from Bay Trading and black strappy heels from MK1.

Littletreefrog · 05/07/2025 18:44

I wore a dress from the maternity section of Debenhams. I wasn't pregnant, I wasn't even fat I just had a very distorted view of my own body and a DM and DF who were too busy with themselves to notice. Looking at the photos now I may as well have worn a sack.

A ball gown from the only shop in Bath that was acceptable. They also offered dresses for hire but that was a massive no-no.

It was like real life Rivals. People arrived on anything from tractors to Porsches and Maserati. (Not a public school, just rural with parents who had (mostly) more money than sense)

was that shop in the shoppimg centre that got knocked down for the new bus station etc?

Needmorelego · 05/07/2025 18:46

We had a disco. I probably wore leggings and a t-shirt.
I was dragged along by my mates. I hated school discos - they were just so boring.
If I was a school leaver these days I definitely wouldn't go to a prom. They sound everything I hate - fancy clothes, sometimes a formal meal, posing for photos, arriving in a limo..... urrgh. I'd hate every minute.

anon2022anon · 05/07/2025 18:49

2001, not a prom but a party in the room above the ice arena.
I wore an outfit I knew I would wear to go out out in, and we left after the buffet to go to the pub instead- oh the good old days!
Not these colours, but it will have been an asymmetric top this shape, possibly with a slogan, some bootcut trousers, and a pair of slip on mule shoes. I had short blonde hair, looked about 12, no idea why they let me into the pub, but they always did 🤷🏼‍♀️

1993 & school uniform, end of school prom thing was not a thing!

Ilovelowry · 05/07/2025 18:52

Oooh. A sort of burgundy checked three quarter length sleeveless dress with buttons down the front from Topshop. With cork wedge sandals.

1994 and we had our leavers party at Old Trafford overlooking the pitch.

State school. Northwest. Obvs 😂

unsync · 05/07/2025 19:05

1980s. Disco in sports hall. Mainly Cinzano Bianco fumes I believe. It's a bit hazy tbh.

JohnsShirt · 05/07/2025 19:06

A mandarin collared long dress, with a split up the side.

Londonmummy66 · 05/07/2025 19:06

A ball gown with an enormous blue silk skirt, boned fitted black bodice and off the shoulder fitted blue sleeves - 1985 and made from a pattern I bought in Peter Jones - along with the silk.

CrushingOnRubies · 05/07/2025 19:13

A pale green chiffon long dress. With empire line. 2008. Was meh, didn’t know what I was looking for/ wanted.

plain red ball gown 2010 loved that dress

CompetePrettyWell · 05/07/2025 19:19

Don't remember and end if school at 16, only a presentation evening in the Autumn. Certificates and prizes. I wore a white and red dress with pussy bow..dressing older than I do now. 😂

We did have a leavers disco at primary. My mam took me to Tammy Girl, in our local city. We travelled by bus. She bought me a tan skirt and top, with a tie scarf front.
She plaited two thin braids at the front of my hair and added beads to the ends, tying them to the back.
My mam didn't really make much effort but I remember this very fondly.

Normandy144 · 05/07/2025 19:26

We had a prom in 1993 for post GCSEs. It wasn't held anywhere special - just the school hall but we dressed up. I wore a black crepe floor length dress with knee split and sweetheart neckline and wide straps. Had my hair done too. Proms were definitely a thing at my school in outer London suburbs and out year wasn't the first to have one. Also had one for 6th form in 1995 which was at a hotel, but honestly can't remember what I wore.

Fifthtimelucky · 05/07/2025 19:27

We didn’t have one either. 1979.

merryhouse · 05/07/2025 19:29

1987, "6th form ball" which was basically a disco in the social lounge which served alcohol at certain points because it was a community college.

I wore a long dress and matching bolero jacket that my mum had in the late 50s - grey silk with very small blue and yellow flowers. I think I carried a metallic bag. Silver and marcasite necklace, possibly my grandmother's, which I still have.

Satisfiedkitty · 05/07/2025 19:33
  1. My school didn't have a formal do, but we all got tickets to the June Ball at a local girls' school. My mum made me a full length, blue, ballgown with a sweetheart neckline and puffy short sleeves. I wore it to university balls as well.
Carzycat · 05/07/2025 19:36

I was in Australia, 1985. Mum made me a white taffeta ball gown, but she ran out of fabric so it was just past knee length. Had an off the shoulder “ruffle” trimmed with pink ribbon.

HauntedBungalow · 05/07/2025 19:45

We just went to the pub then a club we often went onto. It was a good night though - everyone was there and we put our favourite tunes on the jukebox. Lots of high jinx, snogging and cutting loose behaviour. I wouldn't have wanted a prom. I knew they had them in the USA but it looked like a lot of pressure, and I was a bit of a goth so I wouldn't have worn a prom dress anyway.

ThirdStorm · 05/07/2025 19:48
  1. River island. Pencil skirt and a crop vest. Very of its time. It was a bit of a treat shopping in River island and I treasured the bag!
HeddaGarbled · 05/07/2025 19:50

Didn’t have one after O levels. After A levels (1978) we had a disco and I wore a flouncy flowery dress, skin coloured tights and platform shoes.

RampantIvy · 05/07/2025 19:50

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/07/2025 18:06

We didn’t have one! 1992

Neither did we - 1977

I don't think they were a thing back then.

Permanentlymisunderstood · 05/07/2025 19:55

Army surplus trousers and a tight tshirt, 1994 in a random field belonging to someone in my year’s dad. Very rural. We all brought tents and drink with us, and so ended up wearing a fair amount of that too. Big bonfire, there were some speakers rigged up and we just crashed out for the whole night. Good times. The thought of a formal prom actually makes me a bit queasy.

JohnnyLuLus · 05/07/2025 19:57

We didn't have such a thing. 1994 - rural state school. A group of us went into town to an Indian restaurant after our exams were finished.

onehorserace · 05/07/2025 20:03

1973 they didn't exist.

Pineapplewaves · 05/07/2025 20:03

There was no such thing at my school. You got your shirt signed by everyone in the last week then you left. There was no such thing as giving teachers gifts or teachers giving gifts either - 1991.
