Don’t know where to start and need everything. I’ve been using the same products for years. It all seems to have moved on.There seem to be products out there I’ve never even heard of.

Search for videos on YouTube and find someone you relate to and then either just buy whatever they’re recommending or use it as a shopping list to find alternatives!

YouTube van be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what your looking for.

Lisa Eldridge does some very good tutorials.

And a woman at the No. 7 counter in Boots gave me a lovely makeover and wasn't at all pushy.

Literally can not be arsed to scroll You Tube. How on earth would you start? It would take forever and I haven’t a clue what to look for . Is there not an easier way.

I would just search “over 50s make up tutorial”

https://m.youtube.com/@HannahHallMakeup Is great for 50 somethings. Really accessible and she had great easy to follow vids. I’m of that age, don’t really ‘do’ make up but have learnt a lot from her.

Before you continue to YouTube

You book an hour with a Beauty Concierge at Selfridges … The appointment is in the salon, not on the shop floor, and they show you things from any and every brand that might suit you. Anything you buy is redeemable against the initial cost of the session.

(I admit I haven’t done it myself - but if I cared enough about makeup that is what I’d do. Rather than playing around with virtual try ons on the Gucci and Hermes sites, and occasionally popping in to a Tom Ford shop …)

Whatwouldnanado · 25/06/2025 20:29

I went to a Laura Mercier counter. Brilliant. Nothing radical just fresher. Tinted moisturiser, lovely glosses and soft eye crayons are the way forward.

You cannot be serious, @WutheringTights?

I would visit a few different skin and make up stands in Boots and some department stores. They will look at your skin in person and you should be able to get some tailored recommendations. Similarly with the make up they can advise you of products based on your colouring and products that are more suited to mature skin. You can them compare all your experiences of the different products and decide from there what you want to purchase. The great thing about in store is that some of them will allow returns if you find them unsuitable for whatever reason.

You just have to try everything on yourself. What looks amazing on a youtuber can look terrible on a real-life person. A good space NK or a big department store, or one of the larger Bootses, is ideal. London's Covent Garden one has reams of makeup and some nice mirrors.

user593 · 25/06/2025 20:31

What kind of look do you want and what’s your budget OP?

Overtheatlantic · 25/06/2025 20:34

Wear less makeup and focus more on skin care. I’ve started getting monthly facials which have helped with my pores.

nongnangning · 25/06/2025 20:38

Another vote for Lisa Eldridge make up videos on YouTube.

Editing to add: also Jones Road Miracle Balm

WutheringTights · 25/06/2025 21:13

What’s wrong with India Knight? I love her book.

Beetlebumz · 25/06/2025 21:35

This sounds crazy but it worked for me. I uploaded a picture of my face to chat gpt and asked it to recommend make up products to suit my colouring. It was honestly amazing everything it recommended looked great and was the right shade including concealer.

OvaHere · 25/06/2025 21:36

First question is what do you feel is wrong with your current make up?

Usually with women over 40 it's the base make up that stops working. Full coverage matte foundation no longer works for many of us and as others have said focusing on decent skincare and moving to lighter, dewy foundations or skin tints works better.

Lipstick, blush, eyeshadow and mascara hasn't really changed that much despite the marketing and hype. If you have some you love keep using them.

If not the current trends have moved towards tinted lip balms and lip oils, liquid and cream blushes infused with skincare have been popular recently and possibly you could try a brown mascara as a gentler option than black.

I know you said you can't be bothered with youtube but there are some good creators 40+ whose videos are helpful. If you can find one with a very similar skin tone to yourself that can be helpful too.

I've literally told you where to look on YouTube and where to go in person for good advice.

trippingthelightfantastic1 · 25/06/2025 21:56

Have you got a Space NK nearby? If so I would try there. You can book a makeover. When I went they did a fab job finding natural looking products - everywhere else I tried made me look like a clown. The following work for me (I am mid 50s, mild rosacea): laura mercier tinted moisturiser, westman atelier baby cheeks blush stick, rare beauty tinted lip oil, westman atelier eye pencil.

doubleshotcappuccino · 25/06/2025 21:57

Primer and setting spray ! One at the beginning and one at the end ! You don’t need any books . Honestly that at watch a bit of you tube for tips. I love Nivea and also take collagen and am in my 50s x

Sunshineismyfavourite · 25/06/2025 22:02

I did this earlier this year before I went on a girls holiday (I'm 57). Booked an appointment online at Boots for a makeover. I didn't want to spend a fortune but wanted a complete overhaul - it was great! Spent about £120 on new products and got some great tips and new ideas especially for eye shadow and contouring/blusher.

Doggymummar · 25/06/2025 22:08

I did the YouTube thing and found Bougie on a Budget. I then spent maybe £100 on Amazon for a full face of Elf makeup. I only wear make up maybe once a month if that so didn't want to spend a fortune. She has had a facelift but she is the same age as me and I liked her look.

Breadcat24 · 25/06/2025 22:20

@WutheringTights I think you are getting this response for one of 2 reasons

  1. India Knight is infamous for standing by her husband Eric Joyce who was convicted of possession of child porn
  2. India Knight herself is not a great advert for knowing how to show off a well made up look

So what are good brands for late 50s? Does Elf work on more mature skin? I need foundation or some kind of base, do I need all this shodowing and highlighting stuff, bronzers etc? Also blusher, they all seem to be creams now, any good brands, how do you apply them…… Think I need to start using eye shadow and advice on eyeliner….

Our Boots is horrible. All the staff are really snooty, our JL is sooooo dark.
