Don’t know where to start and need everything. I’ve been using the same products for years. It all seems to have moved on.There seem to be products out there I’ve never even heard of.

OP posts:

Did you see my post about the Selfridges service? It’s available in all their branches I think.

I've literally told you where to look on YouTube and where to go in person for good advice.

I think OP was responding to the post before yours, which was less specific.

So what are good brands for late 50s? Does Elf work on more mature skin? I need foundation or some kind of base, do I need all this shodowing and highlighting stuff, bronzers etc? Also blusher, they all seem to be creams now, any good brands, how do you apply them…… Think I need to start using eye shadow and advice on eyeliner….

Our Boots is horrible. All the staff are really snooty, our JL is sooooo dark.

Yes it's great for mature skin I am 56

Mumwithbaggage · 26/06/2025 10:03

Space NK. Ventured in there for the first time a while ago - always thought it wasn't for people like me. The staff were lovely. You can book a full tutorial for £45 redeemable against products bought and you can take in your own stuff too so they can show you how to use it. I'm booking one with a friend.

Coffeeishot · 26/06/2025 10:10

I follow Kate Hughes on FB and instagram she's great easy to follow she doesn't bombard you with waffle and her tips are easy to follow, I don't wear makeup often but when I do i use her method. I see you asked about Elf I use elf skin care I like it, I don't have £££s to spend on expensive skin care so its elf and nivea for me.

Go to a counter - I’m 40s and found MAC helpful, and the other one I would try is Bobbi Brown - not esp trendy but caters for all ages (also Lancôme)

See what they suggest, but something if you like it, but otherwise Boots/Superdrug dupes from brands like Rimmel, Maybelline etc are pretty decent these days

Empress13 · 26/06/2025 13:59

For me I decided less is more with makeup e.g I use L’Oreal Glotion in summer no heavy foundation. I also think a glowy look is better than a powdered dry complexion. Go for cream blushers. If you have hooded eyes don’t use black eyeliner it makes them look smaller go for brown or grey liners. Make sure your eyebrows are a good shape and tidy makes all the difference with framing your face. Just my thoughts but as pp have said YouTube have some great tutorials just type in makeup over 50! Good luck !

gingercat02 · 26/06/2025 14:00

A colleague of mine did a Charlotte Tilbury make up tutorial, she looks amazing even with minimal work make up

jeaux90 · 26/06/2025 14:05

I’m 53 and I did find a make up tutorial on youtube helpful in terms of methods you need to change, eye makeup in particular.

Foundation no longer works for me so I focus on fresh and healthy look so brands I really like are Jones Road, English Mineral Make up company, Beauty pie illuminated eye cover up.

I have become allergic to so many things since menopause so I do avoid anything with Acetate or Acrylates in (a lot of makeup and face products do)

I was using Trinny, Charlotte Tilbury etc but can’t anymore.

Upcircle is a face product company I like too.

BigDahliaFan · 26/06/2025 14:13

I went to the Clarins stand at boots, she was an older lady who was nicely made up, and bought new stuff on her advice. So bb cream not foundation and lighter lipstick.

CeliaCanth · 26/06/2025 14:14

SpaceNK or a local Laura Mercier counter. And be assertive about what you want - eg natural, 5-minute routine etc.

winterdarkness · 26/06/2025 14:16

SpaceNK or Trinny London are my go-to places

TryForSpring · 26/06/2025 14:20

India Knight did more than stand by her paedophile partner. Her relationship with Eric Joyce was used in mitigation to keep him out of prison when he was convicted of holding Category A child sex abuse materials, including video of the rape of a baby, @WutheringTights @Breadcat24.

VirginaGirl · 26/06/2025 14:21

53 and gradually seem to be under-hauling it!

Gone from wearing a full face to literally just liquid liner, a smidge of cream blush and Carmex lip salve.. Haven't gone without foundation for decades but suddenly just don't feel like it. This has brought out a few freckles that I haven't had for years that people have commented on (positively!).

I think less is more cosmetic-wise as you get older, personally.

Breadcat24 · 26/06/2025 14:29

@TryForSpring yes I know. Did not want to derail OPs thread with an essay on IK

WutheringTights · 26/06/2025 14:30

Breadcat24 · 25/06/2025 22:20

@WutheringTights I think you are getting this response for one of 2 reasons

  1. India Knight is infamous for standing by her husband Eric Joyce who was convicted of possession of child porn
  2. India Knight herself is not a great advert for knowing how to show off a well made up look
Edited

Wow. I didn’t know that about Eric Joyce.

I agree that she’s not exactly Hollywood glamour, but I really liked a some of the skincare she recommended so the book helped me. But I take your point. Thanks.

greyeyes200 · 26/06/2025 14:34

54 and haven’t changed any of my make up products…but I have tweaked them a bit. Estée Lauder double wear foundation mixed with a tiny bit of illuminating primer goes on lovely, lasts all day still but a nice lighter finish. Charlotte tilbury pillow talk lipstick doubles up as a really nice natural looking blush. I have dropped the eyeliner though and only use mascara on top lashes, I found if I put it on bottom lashes it was causing “shadows”. If I wear eyeshadow it’s a light bronze. Finished off with revolution fix and glow setting spray but don’t spray directly onto face, spray it on to a beauty blender and just bounce it on your face.

I was going to recommend Charlotte Tilbury too. The skin products are lovely on my mid 50s skin. My husband also complimented me when I went for the Pillow Talk plumping gloss. I use the stick foundation for going out. I also like Bare Minerals for every day coverage when I don’t want to wear a full face.

Its worth paying a nod to current trends, eg heavy eyeshadow is not currently on trend, so a quick wash with a very neutral colour and a focus on mascara and groomed brows will give a more up to date look. Blusher should be applied lightly just above the ‘sucked in’ placement of the 80s and 90s. I like Benefits blushers.

I also found it very useful to buy a magnifying mirror now my eyes aren’t as good as they used to be!

bumsntums · 26/06/2025 14:53

I like Wayne Goss on YouTube. I found Jones Road WTF brilliant, but know it is a marmite product (Liberty counter was generous with samples). Agree that less is more. A redeemable against purchase makeover at John Lewis (Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown or Nars would probably be my pick) would be a good starting point. You could do one a week for a month and go for cocktails in the sun after!

FusionChefGeoff · 26/06/2025 15:18

I just stopped wearing it!

I am 65. I used to wsear a lot of make up. I don't mean trowel it on, I mean a full fcae of it. Now I realise my skin is absolutely fine. I got really into skin care and occasionally use a tinted SPF (love the garnier one though it is very 'warm', also those K0reon ones (cannot remember the name!!). Otherwise an untinted one over a moisturiser.

For me it is always about the eyes and eyebrows as my brows are barely there and my lashes are short and pale despite having dark brown hair (oh okay grey hair that needs colouring!!!) They really need make up (mine do anyway) so I use shadow in natural colours. Now this kills me as I love colour and used to put quite outlandish colours on my eyes but colour ages me! I also use dark brown liner and mascara in black or brown. I use tinted lip balms now and found a very nice Bourjois pensil in a beigey pink colour. I hope they are not being discontinued (again) as I love the range.

I rarely use blusher except if going out somewhere and even then do not always bother. I do have a matte face powsder for my still functioning t zone.

Shetlands · 26/06/2025 16:38

I'm early 70s and a Charlotte Tilbury fan too. I also follow this American woman on youtube as she focuses on the over 40s. She has videos for women in their 40s and also for women in their 70s & 80s. You can't get her products here (shame!) but she's very good at showing how to achieve various looks.

Not at all! I use the loose powder and dust it on lightly with a brush and take the compact with me in my handbag for touch ups.
