Don’t know where to start and need everything. I’ve been using the same products for years. It all seems to have moved on.There seem to be products out there I’ve never even heard of.

As per some pp's myself and pretty much all of my friends have stopped wearing make-up. We might put a bit of mascara and lipstick on ocassionally, but generally day to day, no-one bothers. Personally I think most people look better with minimal make up but thats a very me thing. My DD's are the same and they are only in their 20's.

Not at all! I use the loose powder and dust it on lightly with a brush and take the compact with me in my handbag for touch ups.

Thank you, sometimes powders can just sit on your face. Ive tried and binned a few because they looked horrible.

Gowlett · 26/06/2025 16:47

I think, start by binning all of the old stuff.
Even if it’s still good… I have loads of nice make-up.
But, I’m just not going to use it anymore.
Then, I’ll be able to just get what I need!

If you have a Charlotte Tilbury counter you can visit, they should let you sample it. https://stores.charlottetilbury.com/uk

Just checked my powder to see if it had a shade marked on it and my loose powder is actually by Laura Mercier! (which is fabulous) It's my pressed powder compact that's Charlotte Tilbury.

We only have Boots so I'm not sure but ill definitely have a look.

Literally can not be arsed to scroll You Tube. How on earth would you start? It would take forever and I haven’t a clue what to look for . Is there not an easier way.

Don't need to scroll, OP. Most of them pedal out exactly the same advice.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 26/06/2025 18:21

I’m 54 and I have my lashes lifted and tinted so I look more alert and bright eyed. I also have my eyebrows tinted and this makes them look neater and colours the greys. Even without makeup I feel better in myself and it’s relatively low maintenance (get them done every couple of months ) and a good base to start.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 26/06/2025 18:31

I’m in my 40s and I’ve found it’s all about the base. No more foundation / powder. Now it’s tinted moisturiser and concealer. Cream blush, a good setting spray. Cream eye shadow sticks. Moved away from black eye liner and onto a much more flattering smoky grey (bobbi brown) A non sticky gloss lip with a hint of tint.

Aiming for dewy/ fresh rather than dried out and settling in the wrinkles.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 26/06/2025 18:53

Lisa Eldridge is very down to earth and breaks every down in simple steps
Her lipstick is worth every penny as the pigment gives such stunning colours
I love velvet ribbon and carnival and I’m still deciding on a soft shade
The Dior lip glow are lovely as is the packaging.
Would make a lovely gift

Kwean · 26/06/2025 18:58

Have reversed all make-up.

Day-time is tinted SPF moisturiser (Garnier Vit C Glow), little mascara on top lashes. Brows tinted and shaped. Lip pencil and lip balm. Dot of cream blusher.

I have dropped eye-liner, foundation, eyeshadow, bronzer, etc from day wear.

Clean, fresh, dewy and natural at 58.

Evenings out I would wear more makeup. I went for a Trinny London consultation in John Lewis and was really delighted - its technically a light 'day' look - but is the addition of a light foundation, contouring and a wonderful pop of a rosegold cream eyeshadow that makes my blue eyes pop and is very contemporary looking. She also introduced me to a lovely coral lipstick that I would never have picked up. Still no eyeliner. Really pleased with it.

I think there is a real push by companies to sell us more 'layers' ie more products and mix up skin care and make-up. I found it really confusing.

Primers, serums, moisturizers, SPF, foundation, contour, blush, bronzer, highlighter, concealer, powder, setting spray - just a nonsense really - thats 12 flipping layers!!

Thanks for this post, i am going to have a look at Trinny. Especially liking the sound of the rose gold shadow. I've been looking for something that's easy and flattering.

India Knight? Not a fucking chance. Absolutely not!

Beauty and the Boutique on Facebook has really nice videos for 40s+ https://beautyandtheboutique.com/?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwLJLspleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHj3G6fKuvS9nnAUP91YnpqBCTDWzE2plWU7nBASZNRT0w6uOcn_6hdPmHifS_aem_5JYnFs3kKW7yfnxQk0whRw

On Insta I like Mister Makeup Artist. https://www.instagram.com/mister.makeupartist?igsh=Z3c1ZDBqZGU0a2Vn

They keep it relatively simple.

Agree. She is very down to earth.
Then go book a session and be totally honest - I feel I'm in a rut, my life is like this , what would you suggest to update me.

If you have some money to throw at it, you can hardly do better than

They don’t advertise, make all their own stuff so that it’s fully customisable. You also really learn how to do it yourself, rather than come away with stuff that never looks as good when you are applying it.

i went from hating the whole business of makeup and being very confident that I can do a makeup that looks like me but tonnes better. Enjoy.

Oh gosh - I went to Cosmetics a la carte once about a million decades ago! (Maybe the 90s.)

It was fine - very personalised service - but afterwards I was vaguely disappointed. It was perhaps a bit Colour Me Beautiful; the things I came away with might have theoretically suited my colouring but didn’t really fit my personality. So 🤷‍♀️ …

Worth trying if it doesn’t take all your exploration budget.

Shetlands · 26/06/2025 20:54

I'm agreeing with people who say less is more. However, I do need a serum first (I get mine from The Ordinary - amazing value) then a high SPF moisturiser that has a tint to it. I do need to powder my nose as it's shiny. Then a quick dab of Fenty cream blusher (best ever blusher) and a slick of Benefit lip stain topped with a clear lip gloss. For evenings I use a Charlotte Tilbury foundation and lippy.

I'm reminded by a poster above about eyelash tinting - had mine done years ago and I'm going to give it a go again. Luckily I still have lush eyebrows so just keep them in shape.

mercilousming · 26/06/2025 21:30

I'm 45 and recently completely overhauled both my skincare and make up routines.

As I've always tended towards oily skin, I'd not used a moisturiser for years, just serums after cleanser/scrub. Realise now how daft that was! I love Origins products, particularly their Ginzeng and Youthtopia products.

Make up, I swapped my far too heavy for my middle aged skin CT foundation and powder for Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, cream blush and a setting spray. The tinted moisturiser and setting spray have been life changing, and I get so many compliments these days.

I spent some time with the consultant on the LM counter in my local JL and she was great - showed me how to use the products, and also that I'd been using the wrong base shade, going far too pale. It was her who recommended Origins to me too.

I really would recommend talking to an expert!

Summerbean · 26/06/2025 22:47

I didn't know about the India Knight partner thing but didn't rate the book at all and donated it to a charity shop. I bought a foundation she raved about and it was absolutely awful and is still languishing on my dressing table

I do this too - not the lift, but eyebrow and lash tint and eyebrow wax. Makes such a difference.

I don’t think India Knight is a “beloved Sunday Times columnist” as stated in the blurb for her book, on Mumsnet @WutheringTights

JanetheObscure · 01/07/2025 14:11

I'm 60 and had a fantastic make over at a Laura Mercier counter in Selfridges in Birmingham. I asked for a natural look and although the consultant was pretty young, she was very intuitive about a (much) older woman's needs! The tinted moisturiser was light and fresh and she did amazing things with my eyes. I bought a couple of products and really rate them.
