Sunglasses for over glasses

DuckCootLoon · 25/06/2025 13:38

I keep getting adverts for sunglasses that can be worn over the top of prescription glasses.
On the model photos they look quite nice, like big glamorous 50s style, but they all have quite delicate glasses underneath. My glasses are more chunky and I don't know if it would work wearing both together.
Has anyone got any real life experience to share please?

Please don't suggest buying more prescription (sun)glasses.

Well, I was going to say what about those prescription glasses that go dark in the sun? I have some and they're great. However, if you don't want to buy any more prescription glasses, I don't know what to suggest. I do remember those dark lens that you clip onto glasses and unless they have improved a lot, I would say don't do it - they remind me of old aunts and used to be very naff indeed,.

thedevilinablackdress · 25/06/2025 13:52

Having tried various options, tho not those big over the top sunglasses, my preference is a clip that fits neatly on the frame.
I've had transition lenses and separate prescription sunglasses and this is what works best.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 25/06/2025 14:00

I have sunglasses that fit over my glasses. My glasses are quite a chunky plastic style and the sunglasses are fine with them. I have several pairs and most are cheap and from Amazon. They are mostly too big and don't fit well. The pair that I do like are smaller and were bought from a market stall in Denmark. I think I may have to bite the bullet and pay for a more expensive pair of fit overs when I need to replace them as I want to be able to choose the size. However, I do find that over my glasses sunglasses work and are both cheaper and far more convenient than having a normal pair of specs and a tinted pair as well and having to keep switching them.

Laiste · 25/06/2025 14:23

My last 2 pairs of prescription glasses are Eco.

This brand all come with the option of purchasing the matching sunglass lenses which just click onto/off the main frame with invisible magnets.

They're great ! Best of both worlds. DH says when he renews his glasses he'll get some, cos at the mo he's still stuck in the world of wearing normal sunglasses over his prescription glasses 🤪

These, and similar are what I am seeing adverts for. I'm hoping they could look ok, but I kind of don't trust Facebook comments to come from real people. Hoping someone might have tried some.

My prescription is not straightforward so my lenses cost a lot. I don't want to spend that on new glasses again right now.

I also quite fancy polarised because we live by the sea, and they help with glare, and I don't think I can get that in a prescription.

@Cyclistmumgrandma Cyclistmumgrandma thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear about. Are your prescription glasses quite dainty, or more substantial?

I got some a pair of these earlier this year and they are a game changer. I can now read outside in th sunshine 😀

"I was going to say what about those prescription glasses that go dark in the sun? "

I had photocromatic (spelling?) a few years ago. People made fun of me for my 70s glasses and also they didn't work properly. They take some time to adjust to you walk into a building but your glasses are still dark for the sun so you're quite blind for a bit.

As for those clip-ons, I always mention Dwayne Wayne, but hardly anyone remembers who I mean.

PeachSnail · 25/06/2025 21:30

I've just recently bought these and they look ok and fit reasonably well over my glasses. It helps that the lenses are quite dark (making it harder to see my glasses frames underneath). There is a very slight glare effect between the two sets of lenses... More noticeable in certain lights. Overall, I'd recommend them... Though they're not a perfect solution

I have fit overs for about £2 a pair from Ali express. They’re brilliant, I don’t bother with my prescription ones any more. They’re not a right fit so unless your glasses are super chunky I can’t see it would be an issue (but at £2 a pair you can take a risk!)

BecauseOfTheRain · 25/06/2025 22:26

I bought some fitovers from bloombelle a couple of months ago and am pleasantly surprised by how great they are! I automatically chose them over my prescription sunglasses during the recent hot weather and on holiday in May, they are really light & comfortable and so much easier than swapping glasses when you go in and out of buildings. I got them at 2for 1, so really reasonable. I suppose my normal glasses are quite dainty but the bloombelle pairs (I went for the classic style) are very big so I would imagine could give coverage to more chunky styles. My husband commented that you couldn’t tell until talking up close that I had another pair of glasses underneath. They are definitely my most successful instagram impulse buy !

DuckCootLoon · 25/06/2025 23:19

Thanks, I'll check those companies out. Certainly for those prices they're worth a try.

I have a bloomebelle pair and a few cheapies off Amazon and they are a game changer. I like the oversized sunnies look anyway but there were a really nice selection of styles

MaggieBsBoat · 26/06/2025 06:45

I have stupidly expensive chunky varifocal glasses (so not willing to spend more on prescription glasses) and have a couple of pairs of cheap £10 large sunglasses that fit over from Boots. They look great and fit perfectly (no slip). I think it’s a case of just looking around and trying them on.

BrunchBarBandit · 26/06/2025 06:49

I succumbed to the advertising bombardment and bought these

They don’t fit over my glasses properly sadly. I wouldn’t wear them where other people will see me but I’ll put them on by the pool when I’m reading . (I did this anyway with ordinary sunglasses over my glasses much to my family’s amusement )

They are quite chunky! Like you my lenses are seriously pricey. By the time I've shelled out for high refractive index plastic (very short sighted so normal plastic lenses are very thick), varifocal lenses, astigmatism correction and prism, the cost shoots up.

I bought a cheap pair on Amazon and they are fine. A bit big but great to keep in the car. I bought a more expensive pair from a brand called Cocoon. They work really well. But are a bit more sporty looking, which I am bit keen on. But they are much cheaper than the £600 I was quoted for a pair of reactions lenses.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/06/2025 16:48

You measure your glasses with the cocoons and get the model that fits them

Cyclistmumgrandma · 26/06/2025 16:52

This is what I have. Shown both with and without my specs.

I have these and they are great,my 12 yr old has a pair too.Tried clip ons and really didn't like them, hate prescription sunglasses as having 2 pairs to swap and change is a pain and don't like the tint of transitions.

HumbleWarrior · 26/06/2025 17:06

I got some of the Bloombelle ones mentioned by pps and found them really useful to keep in my bag to just slip on if I was walking into town or whatever and couldn't be bothered with the faff of swapping to my (hugely pricey) prescription sunglasses. The Bloombelle ones were on a buy one get one free offer so I have a pair in the car too.

However, I recently realised that nowhere on their website or social media pages do they mention anything about UV filters and they don't have the CE mark, which I think is a bad sign. I don't want to lose the convenience of fitovers as I've found them a game changer too, but I've bought some from Amazon that have UV 400 protection and the CE label (I think mine were Opticaid, which seemed like a legit brand.)

Aparecium · 26/06/2025 17:36

I currently have these from Amazon, and a very different pair from Boots that are also thin, but much boxier, with lenses in the sides as well.

I love the purple pair. They are very comfortable and easy to wear. I've worn them over a range of different glasses shapes and sizes.

The other pair I keep in my car. They are also light and comfortable, but not as pretty. I don't find the side windows make much difference, but that's probably because my uncorrected vision is so poor that my side-vision (ie not through my glasses) is useless.

I find transitions lenses worse than useless. They do not darken weigh outfits and they remain annoyingly tinted indoors.

I have had prescription sunglasses, but I would not have them again. Unless I was spending hours outside, I had to carry my regular glasses around and keep switching. That's 2 x several hundreds of pounds-worth of glasses to lose or break. And it's faffy to switch. With overglasses I just push them up into my head, just as any sunglasses-wearer does.
