The Leeds Look and regional microtrends

Lighthearted, but...

Right, I know people will wear this outfit in other places, but I live near Leeds but travel a lot for work, and in the summer in Leeds I see so many women wearing specifically a knee length bias cut skirt in polka dot or ditsy floral, with a white slim cut t-shirt. I hardly ever see it anywhere else, but I just counted 4 in 10 minutes in Leeds. Didn't see any in York the other day. Going to Manchester tomorrow and keep an eye out. Is this a Leeds Look? Am I imagining it?

Got me wondering if there any other microtrends that are tied to a particular city? I don't mean cultural stereotypes please, just actual observations.

I live near Leeds and havent noticed this. Currently on a tram in Manchester and no one is wearing anything like that.

Bbq1 · 20/06/2025 12:29

Not seeing this in Liverpool
Short /long dresses, wide leg /crop pants and shorts mostly.

neverhappenedtopablopicasso · 20/06/2025 12:45

Maybe it's confirmation bias but once I've noticed I can't stop noticing it!

People always style it a bit like they styled the floral midi + denim jacket that was ubiquitous a few summers back.

Round my actual neigbourhood it's lots of barrel/wide crop trousers and shell tops.

Is is actual knee-length skirts or midis? I think of the former as quite rare nowadays!

I don't think you see that many slim-cut tees around nowadays either - it's all slightly cropped boxy around here.

Interesting thread though! I thought people were more dressed up in Leeds than in a lot of other UK cities, last time I was here on a wknd evening. And it was absolutely rammed!

Actual knee length, bias cut skirts. I don't know where they're getting them from!

And slim-ish cut tees rather than boxy or cropped.

It's on quite mainstream-looking people but I never see those clothes anywhere else.

Yes it's bananas on a weekend and everyone super dolled-up (women) or in fancy dress as the Super Mario Bros (men).

It's this sort of look, but shorter skirts more like knee length, although this might be the way they hang in real life. Like I say, nothing groundbreaking at all.

In the nicest possible way I think the York looks is the art teacher I think it's fabulous! I wouldn't manage to pull it off but it screams art teacher to me.

Arealnumber · 20/06/2025 16:58

Thanks, I love this skirt! I’m going to order it tomorrow. Bias cut skirts are always lovely to me & I do prefer a slim cut T-shirt to a boxy one too!

ittersbitters · 20/06/2025 17:18

I worked in buying and we used to sent certain things to certain stores eg what sold well in Liverpool wouldn't do so well in Brighton.

I rather like that, Op! (Missing point of thread completely)

Do you have a pic OP? We accidentally went to two places in a row where the same lesbian couple were last weekend and both of them looked so flipping stylish and cool and slightly androgynous in a low key casual way, I've not stopped thinking about their looks since. Probably helps that they were beautiful too. I know that's not the same as art teacher style but I've got no chance of looking androgynous or wearing the kinds of cuts they were rocking, I'm way too curvy. I think I like arty style too but I'd like to know how others define it.

I love noticing regional variations.

Last time we were in Manchester at night, all the young gals were wearing either:
tiny black tennis/ ra ra skirt hybrid with bare legs and black knee high boots
or
sequin hot pants (basically knickers) with the same big black boots.

mintgreensoftlilac · 20/06/2025 22:03

I love stuff like this! Find it so interesting! I live in Leeds and do occasionally wear this sort of thing. Though I prefer t-shirt style midi dresses at the moment. Very excited that we have a Uniqlo coming to Leeds soon!

FishPie2 · 20/06/2025 22:22

I am actually going to Leeds tomorrow, whatever will I wear if I don't have this skirt? Will I be allowed out on the streets, Leeds Victoria and the Trinity Centre without one. What about the Market for my lunch.
So worried. 😃

Bluebellwood129 · 20/06/2025 23:27

I saw someone wearing this skirt with a fitted white t-shirt in Chester this week - not sure if it's bias cut but it was just below the knee on them.

I wear knee length skirts with slim fitting t shirts (sometimes white) and am not in Leeds. One of my main skirts is black with cream polka dots and another is gingham and I also have a tweed pattern one.

That’s a midi skirt not a knee length one.

Nutmuncher · 20/06/2025 23:41

Yes I’ve noticed this look a few times too OP

MoominUnderWater · 20/06/2025 23:41

This sort of thing, I do actually style mine with Mary Jane’s and socks as well. 🤣

My regional micro trend, Manchester (specifically Piccadilly gardens), male youths with their tracksuit bottoms tucked into their socks. Socks pulled up quite high.

Yes you're right, it's advertised as midi but on the person I saw, it was just below the knee and worn on the waist.

MidnightMeltdown · 21/06/2025 00:25

Knee length skirts are supposedly back in fashion https://www.ft.com/content/f40a75a7-9cf9-44fd-85a8-c8030db7e214

MN seems to still favour midi’s though. Probably because knee length can be harder to pull off with flat shoes without looking frumpy.

ThatShyRoseViper · 21/06/2025 08:10

That was a really popular look in Paris when I was there last month, worn with huge clompy biker boots or New Balance trainers.

Nugg · 21/06/2025 08:19

I’m in Leeds and never seen this look! Must be more observant!!

OneBadKitty · 21/06/2025 08:43

I'm from near Leeds and my daughter wore this look as a teen 2 or three eyears ago- sourced from the many second hand and vintage shops in Leeds- it's a very retro 90s inspired look.
