Tidying up ‘downstairs’

Hi everyone, I’ve lost some weight and looking forward to getting away and being in a bikini for the first time in what seems forever.

Now downstairs I’ve only ever trimmed with scissors to keep it tidy, but I’m wondering if I need to try to shave or wax? I’d be really interested in tips and advice. I don’t think I’d be confident to wax and less so to go to a professional, but I’ll see what people say x

I use a battery powered trimmer to keep it neat. I occasionally shave the really wild sides, as and when necessary, say if I was going to be in a bikini.
I tried wax -far too painful!

AbigailB · 18/06/2025 17:56

Ok thanks, so an electric trimmer might be the answer

I shave. I also apply moisturiser every day!

Gymbunny2025 · 18/06/2025 21:55

I used to wax but now IPL has meant I don’t have to bother! Would definitely recommend!!

I’ve just bought a Phillips one blade trimmer from Argos it was around £30. It’s brilliant so far, really easy to use xx

I use a WooWoo hair removal cream to do the whole lot. Great stuff but you do have to be careful- chemical burns down there aren’t fun!

Oh definitely a professional!!!

Wax wax wax wax wax

WildBalonz · 20/06/2025 03:51

I had a bikini wax for the first time in my life a few days ago. I used to just leave it be but it was annoying having to make sure no hairs were showing everytime I went swimming. I think wax is the way to go, I’m not brave enough to shave myself I fear I’d nick myself. Each to there own though!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 20/06/2025 06:32

I use Veet hair removal cream. Waxing and shaving gave me ingrown hairs.

Is going to a professional not highly embarrassing? Is it painless with a professional too?

well whether you “need” to shave or wax is your decision.

if you are happy with how you look in a bikini if you haven’t shaved/waxed then no, you don’t need to.

I’m sure they see dozens of of bikinis lines everyday, so it’s not embarrassing. I have a Brazilian ‘landing strip’ wax, suitable for all occcassions (!) and have been having it done for so long, that it hardly re-grows at all

Not embarrassing at all! They have the same bits as us and are super professional. Mine played music, offered water, chatted etc. it’s not painless but not too bad. Especially after the first time

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/06/2025 16:38

Waxing for me. You soon get used to it and it lasts so much longer.

God no, they see many! My waxing lady is a really good friend now

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 20/06/2025 17:35

Just be careful with waxing and definitely try it way before you go on holiday just in case it doesn’t agree with you. I had double hairs so if I was waxed I just got angry regrow within 24 hours. Not what I was expecting! I switched to laser treatment which worked brilliantly but obviously took time to show results.

AbigailB · 21/06/2025 13:59

Thanks, I’ve booked a wax appointment for Tuesday!

I find waxing to be the most effective, but Christ almighty, it bloody hurts!! I have it done every 3-4 weeks to minimise the pain because leaving it any longer is awful. That said, I think I am weirdly sensitive to it, I have friends who actually fall asleep when they are being waxed.

Ilovemyshed · 21/06/2025 14:10

Wax! Find a technician who uses lycol hot wax and have a bikini wax taking a wide strip each side and across the top. You don’t have to take your knickers off, just pull to one side or other as they go.

It doesn’t bother me at all but that’s probably because of years of doing it. When I started, I took two paracetamol before I went and it definitely took the edge off.

After, use a rough sponge over the area to help avoid ingrowing hairs and moisturise well. I’m sure you’ll be fine! Take a couple of painkillers an hour before too, it takes the edge off! It doesn’t bother me at all now.

I’ve been waxing for more than 20 years! Everyone says it gets less painful but it definitely hasn’t for me. It’s weird because I generally have a decent pain threshold but I find waxing so painful it makes me sweat 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I am too fair for laser and I like the result so I grit my teeth for half an hour every 3 weeks.
