I'm not usually a Lucy and Yak person, but I have just got these trousers and shirt and love them. Can I wear them to a wedding with my shiny new Birkenstocks (maybe with shirt open and a colourful vest underneath)? Or is it kind of rude to wear black like this??

TIA

I'd say not super traditional/smart, but a formal wedding nonetheless....

In that case, inapprpriate. Cotton trousers wouldn't really cut it would they? Neither would Birkenstocks imo. Sorry OP.

GreenCandleWax · 14/06/2025 20:09

Why do you want to wear black cotton trousers to a wedding? Do you always wear black?

BCBird · 14/06/2025 20:19

Not suitable for a wedding.

HermioneWeasley · 14/06/2025 20:35

@HawfinchGreenfinch im going to save you some time - nothing from Lucy and Yak and no colour of Birkenstock are going to be suitable for a wedding.

you can wear black trousers with flat shoes but not those ones

HawfinchGreenfinch · 14/06/2025 20:50

Thank you again.

In answer to what I normally wear - well, I hate skirts and dresses. Forced myself to wear them on rare occasions in my 20s and 30s, but can't face that these days. And I really don't like formal wear. And I only have flat shoes. And I like my trousers baggy. So not ideal for weddings 😬
Not at all wedded to black, but wedded to non-wedding....

You could absolutely wear some nice tailored wide leg trousers with a nice shirt/blouse tucked in and maybe a matching blazer? but these are a big no no!

HawfinchGreenfinch · 14/06/2025 21:02

And this is the first wedding I'll have been to since I've been unwilling to do dresses.

Also, I don't have a huge amount of money, can't stand the feeling of man-made fabrics, and won't wear poorly-fitting clothes. I'm not easy!

Thanks.

I suppose trying to find some decent tailored trousers is the way to go, then. It's sounding quite definite that I can't get away with these.

What do people think about black (since I already have a black blazer)? Is this a no??

Also - are these a no in general, or just for a wedding?!

MadKittenWoman · 14/06/2025 21:10

No in general…

Catwoman8 · 14/06/2025 21:11

No for a wedding, far too casual. I had an auntie who turned up wearing something similar to a family wedding and she stood out for the wrong reasons, just looks like no effort has been made

slinkiemalinkiey · 14/06/2025 21:13

Awful.

Lifelover16 · 14/06/2025 21:16

I agree with PP that the trousers would look appropriate with one of the silk shirts you already have, and some jewellery.

Won’t wear poorly fitted clothes?! That’s exactly how I would describe these 😂 sorry but no, definitely not suitable for a wedding

Pipsquiggle · 14/06/2025 21:23

@HawfinchGreenfinch So glad you have taken on board previous comments.
Your outfit would be great for going to the pub not a wedding.
I also recommend a wide leg tailored suit

EternalSunshine19 · 14/06/2025 21:24

Too casual. That outfit with Birkenstocks would suit a picnic in the park, Not a formal wedding

KateShugakIsALegend · 14/06/2025 21:26

@HawfinchGreenfinch I don't think you can wear black to a wedding, and I am not a big fan of tradition or rules. To me, it feels rude and out of keeping with a joyous event.

But maybe that's just me

EternalSunshine19 · 14/06/2025 21:27

You can buy smart wide leg trousers from zara. Wear with a nice formal blouse or shirt and some loafers / ballet pumps

Doitrightnow · 14/06/2025 21:29

Depends on the couple and the style of wedding surely.

I had a big white church wedding. But I really didn't care what people wore as long as it wasn't, like, slashed to the navel and see-through. Most people wore knee length dresses or suits, but many were more casual and even in jeans. No worries. How formal are the bride and groom? Could you ask them?

My friend had a hippy wedding in a muddy field. Casual was definitely In!

Sure you can. My BIL did. He wears practically nothing but black ever. He looked good.

Smurphy99 · 14/06/2025 21:34

No you can not wear those they look like bloody loungewear. I wore something similar on a plane a few weeks ago so I was in “comfy clothes” for travelling.
no you can not wear all black or any white to a wedding.

Pipsquiggle · 14/06/2025 21:35

Funnily enough I went to a wedding about 10 years ago.
Everyone invited came along all suited and booted. Smart wedding attire.

One bloke turned up in jeans, t shirt, trainers.
At the reception, he was actually singled out in the speeches, lots of comments like
'Good to see Dave always goes the extra mile'
'Dave how do you always interpret invitations so differently to everyone else?!'

Fortunately he took it all in good jest but he did look bloody ridiculous.

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 14/06/2025 21:50

Not what would be deemed wedding wear by most people. So it kind of depends on whether you can handle being the centre of attention/ talking point for being under dressed and whether the bride groom will care.

My wedding was fairly formal (i.e I was in a traditional bridal grown, DH was in a morning suit etc) but it was way more important to us that the people we love were able to be there than what they wore but by last conversation with DHs granny 15 years later covered how much she loved my wedding and how scandalous it was that DHs friend wore leather trousers (a biker mate who's travel plans fell through last minute and decided he could hop on the bike and still get there). I'm so glad he made the call to come and be there rather than get hung up on the right thing to wear.

There are lots of not dress/skirts options that are a lot more wedding friendly. A tailored trouser suit, a jumpsuit, loose patterned wide leg trousers and a suitable top...

GreenCandleWax · 14/06/2025 21:52

I know I asked before, but why black? Its not suitable for a wedding. Also cotton is not suitable for a more formal occasion. So if you must wear trousers as you don't do dresses, what about another colour - say dark blue, and in a silk fabric? or what about a jumpsuit? - there are some lovely ones around this year. You could wear ballet flats with one of those.

Bandofsisters · 14/06/2025 22:54

This has to be a joke post surely?
really not suitable for a wedding
