decent quality umbrellas

I am sick of umbrellas which blow inside out with the first gust of wind and end up looking shit with broken spokes. I am therefore in the market for a good quality walking style umbrella, not one of the fold up put in your handbag jobs. Budget £50 - £70 ish, Any recommendations? Not fussed about colour/pattern, probably go for a boring navy or other plain colour.

Also obviously - if there is an amazing brand everyone recommends for £25, i'm not desperate to spend the whole budget.

I have just bought one from Oswin Hide, technically, they are gents' umbrellas, but I love it.

Take a look at London Undercover. I’ve got a handbag one, DP has a walking one. They have a year (I think) guarantee and the sound of rain falling on them is bliss!

Fulton umbrellas have the royal seal of approval thingy.

DoreenCorkhill · 14/06/2025 22:47

Fulton .

I know you said not fold up umbrellas, but you can get sturdy folding ones - look for windproof (with flaps so the wind goes through rather than turning it inside out) and with a lifetime guarantee. Mine is considerably heavier than the lightweight folding ones though.

There are some great name brand umbrellas, but I have one from boots that's over 20 years old and it has one of the qualities of the big brand umbrellas, which is that it has two layers of fabric. You'll notice that golfing umbrellas have these two layers.

LollyWillow · 15/06/2025 05:33

I have this Fulton and it has never blown inside out. It's great.
I also have a couple of Blunt umbrellas, both Metro and Executive. I've always preferred a walking umbrella to a fold up but the Blunt Metro is terrific. It sounds daft, but I actually enjoy carrying it rolled up - there's something about the size and weight that just works.

thanks all, will check out the Fulton ones.

My umbrella is London Undercover. It's slightly larger than a compact umbrella and has a curved wood handle. It's about 10 years old now.

tammienorrie · 15/06/2025 09:28

The London Undercover ones are double what i'd be prepared to spend. Blunt pushing it a bit but not out of the box outrageous. I can't see that a £160 umbrella would be 5 times better than a £35 one.

OP, I also have a Senz which you might like. I carry it everywhere in whichever bag I use. It has never blown outside in either...it's their selling point. I see they also do "full length" umbrellas which is what you were looking for.

If you're just looking for decent umbrellas, you should check out Citizen Rain Gears. It has a range that covers the basics and they seem to focus on utility.

Here’s what they offer:

  1. 22" and 29" Piano-style folding umbrellas (compact and automatic)
  2. 36", 40", 48", and 54" Garden umbrellas (great for patios or outdoor use)
  3. Windproof garden umbrellas with UV and water-resistant fabric
  4. Most of them come with sturdy frames and carry bags

Overall, if you just need something reliable for regular rain or shade without breaking the bank, Citizen Rain Gears is worth consi
dering.

Hi! I'm stuck between these two brands, based on your experience would you recommend Blunt over Fulton (or the other way around)?. Blunt seems to have better wind resistance which is a big plus for me, but the price difference is ALOT so im not sure if its worth it, since Fulton's wind resistance seems to be. pretty good too.

KakulasSister · 01/09/2025 23:12

I bought my Blunt when I lived in Australia more than 12 years ago. It still looks as good as new and it's never blown outside in. It's simple and stylish. It's a Blunt Metro. If I lost it I'd replace it immediately.

I have no personal knowledge of the Fulton brand.

LadyLapsang · 01/09/2025 23:29

I know you want a walking stick style, but I really recommend Repel wind proof compact umbrellas. I just checked the price on Amazon and it’s only 13.99 for a black one at the moment, slightly more for other colours -I paid double that.

I find the wind resistance really good for both and neither have ever blown inside out. If I have to come down off the fence, I'd say that the Blunt is my favourite, and on a windy day I that's the one I would take out with me - it just feels sturdier and somehow more storm proof. If I were to lose them both, I would replace the Blunt first.
I'm overthinking it now ... and can hardly believe that I've admitted to having a favourite umbrella Smile. They are both good, so I think it comes down to how much you want to spend and which brand has the best colours!

Blunt Umbrellas have 25-40% off plus free shipping just now if anyone is interested. They are excellent umbrellas.
