Wedding help

I have a wedding to go to, it’s in Ireland and I’m lead to believe that Irish weddings tend to be dressy so the sack cloth dress from the guardian article isn’t going to cut it.

I feel so uninspired but what’s currently in the shops - I had a wedding recently in London and ended up pulling something out the back of the wardrobe because everything in the shops was awful. I high I’ve never done before.

I’m short (5’3”) currently a size 10, which is a bit chubby on me. Pale, blond, good legs and boobs, not keen on my arms. Carry weight on my stomach so very fitted dresses not a good look.

I quite like structure and drama, but need to be careful about being overwhelmed

has anyone seen anything amazing?

If I was going to a wedding I'd order a dress from nobody's child. I like the felicity. I haven't tried them on though, could totally be overpowering on 5 ft 3.

Have you any preferences for styles/colours that you know suit you best, and most importantly, what’s your budget?

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2025 16:41

I look great in white and cream but obviously that’s to be avoided!

otherwise, jewel toned greens and blues, most shades of pink and red.

yellow makes me look like I died and crawled back out the ground as does grey and orange.

i like a pattern but always worried it overwhelms my height and it needs to be bold rather than ditsy.

not too worried about budget, but for more than £500 it has to make me feel like a 27 year old super model even if I don’t look like one.

@HollyGolightly4 I also like the felicity but think the drop waist will make me look like a weeble - it’s a hard style to pull of I fear

That's fair enough! They do have some lovely dresses though, so I reckon you could find something to suit.

I usually like Oliver bonas too, but they look a bit dire on the website. I know what you mean about current trends!

Guardian sackcloth it is...?

northernballer · 07/06/2025 20:35

I got the Felicity from Nobodys Child and the shape of it was terrible on me, I'm a flat chested size 8 and it was way too big and looked awful, I loved the print so was gutted!

HollyGolightly4 · 07/06/2025 20:46

Was there lots of material in the skirt @northernballer ? I'd have thought that would have been the perfect shape for the dress!

Saxendi · 07/06/2025 20:55

Would you consider renting something? Selfridges do rental dresses.

Bulletproofmama2021 · 07/06/2025 20:57

From your description I'm a similar build to you....
I wear this in a size Medium and it's v flattering and smart ( easily dressed down with different accessories!)

I think it's the fact that I am so flat chested there was nothing to keep it up so it sat way too low, then it just sort of hung there! I got it to show off my shoulders and arms but I looked ridiculous. They are sized very generously, normally I'm an 8-10 from there.

I could have got it a size smaller but it put me off as there is a £5 charge for returns now.

Perhaps book a personal stylist consultation at John Lewis as they have so many brands?

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/06/2025 10:34

A vert sttliah froend of mine gave me some good advice when I had exactly this issue last summer.

A dramatic skirt with a plain top. I got this skirt and teamed it with a draped sleevless ivory top.

@Ginmonkeyagain I love that look, Queen Letizia & SJP do it amazingly.

im always a bit worried it draws attention to my worst feature - my waist - but maybe I need to try some options.

@Longhotsummers im not really interested in going to JL, I was hoping someone on here would have some fabulous out of the box outfit they could point me to and I could organise myself without so much as leaving my sofa.

@DancingNotDrowning it doesn't seem like it unfortunately! Hopefully someone will come along soon. In the interest of research I went along to my local m+s which stocks nobody's child. Didn't think the dresses were anything to write home about; washed out and overly flowery.

Do you have a decent Sainsbury's nearby? I feel like you might stumble upon a hidden gem in there 🤣
