Help! Love this dress, but it's not fitting right on top!

Hi everyone,

I recently found this gorgeous midi dress (see pic), and I love the style, colour, and everything! However, I'm having a bit of a dilemma. It doesn't seem to fit perfectly from the top
Is there anything I can do to make it fit better, like maybe a specific type of bra or some tailoring tricks? Or should I just give up on this dress ?

Thanks

Most people tend to move the top part across a bit then stitch it into place in the middle, mid boobs, or use a small safety pin

its a lovely dress and suits you

IkaBaar · 04/06/2025 14:47

The under bust seam looks too low, can you shorten the straps? That plus a stitch or two in the middle? Might also be trying a few different types of bras.

spoonbillstretford · 04/06/2025 14:52

I don't think it fits well and is not the right cut for you.

I think something this sort of shape would flatter your figure better. Easier to wear a bra with it.

Newnameformenow · 04/06/2025 14:59

Are you wearing a bra?
Looks like you need a supportive bra and then a couple of stitches to keep the crossover bit in place? Lovely dress

BreakingBroken · 04/06/2025 15:02

A seamstress could make and change the straps to wider and a modesty panel could be fitted at the cleavage. Which would allow a bra.
You could try a size up?
I don’t think it fits you well unfortunately.

This. You need a good bra.

I am not wearing a bra. I was wondering about a strapless bra, but the neckline is too deep for that

Sorry OP, I think it’s a shocker. It does nothing for your boobs and makes your tum look v rounded. You’ve got a lovely figure but this isn’t enhancing anything at all.

DrSnooze · 04/06/2025 17:41

No useful advice as I lack boobs but just wanted to say you look great and it’s a beautiful dress

SoScarletItWas · 04/06/2025 17:49

You need to put on a bra to lift your boobs and then cross the fabric over higher up. At the moment it looks like it’s crossing under your bustline so it’s too revealing. The neckline won’t be so deep if it crosses over in the right place.

FloraBotticelli · 04/06/2025 17:52

I don’t go for dresses like this anymore because they look like that on me too! I think they’re designed for small busts with no bra. They’re useless for wearing with a bra because you end up seeing too much of the bra - not very classy. I’d look for a different style to flatter your shape.

flawless234 · 04/06/2025 17:56

I think I agree with you that " they're useless for wearing with a bra because you end up seeing too much of the bra" That was my worry, or I was wondering if it’s worth getting a strapless bra, but I doubt it would provide enough lift for the boobs.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2025 17:57

The only thing I can think of is to wear a normal bra and then a white t-shirt underneath the dress.
However I don't really like the dress because it reminds me of those striped bedsheets.

stolenlullabies · 04/06/2025 17:58

You need a bra but it won’t work with the bust line. I think you could find something that suits your figure better tbh. I can’t wear dresses like this as my boobs are too big and my body is too short. The dress I think is the same for you, there’s not any definition to your waist it’s just boobs then tummy because of the cut of the dress. I think they suit a more willowy figure with a smaller bust. I’d look for something with a crossover neckline that allows a good bra, or a something with a bit more structure that shows off your figure a bit more in the right places.

I agree with this.

I don't think it flatters your lovely figure. The colour is a bit 'meh' on you too.

@flawless234 A strapless bra that fits you properly would do the job. The vast majority of the support from a bra, with straps or without, comes from the band and not from the straps.
The whole front of that dress is wrong, it's too low down.
I'd suggest you wear a bra and shorten the straps at the back so that the front portion of the dress sits higher up your body.

I was going to suggest the very same.

Plunge bra - and shorten the straps of the dress by an inch

love it. Wear what you want x

SheridansPortSalut · 04/06/2025 18:20

I'm wondering if it might be worth trying sizing up to give more fabric in the cups, then having the straps shortened and a stitch put in to hold the cups in place.

It definitely needs a bra.

EcruCardigan · 04/06/2025 18:34

@flawless234 ,you love the dress but it doesn't even like you.

Watercoloursky · 04/06/2025 18:54

What about turning the straps into more of a halterneck? That might give the front enough 'hoik' to make a difference with the fit?

IWillJustSayThis · 04/06/2025 19:00

That style is quite hard to wear IMO. Stripes can also be unforgiving and the colours are quite wishy washy.

I'm not sure that the style actually suits you, I am sorry. The dress is too tight and so it doesn't flatter your figure. I don't think that sizing up will help (it'll make the bust issue worse). Have you tried different styles / colours?

Harriethulas · 04/06/2025 19:57

I don’t think the colour or fit is right for your skin tone or body shape. I’d give up on this one and go for more of a wrap-style dress that gives better boob coverage and cinches you in at the waist.
