Should I keep the dress?!

Attending a wedding in October, it’s quite an extravagant wedding abroad where the ladies will be wearing floor length gowns.

I found a beauty from Self Portrait in the sale. NEVER have I spent this much on a dress (and what is even more annoying is that realistically I’m only likely to wear it for this one occasion!).

I have well and truly fallen for it and just think it is utterly stunning. However, would it be crazy for me to keep it (I had a further discount code so ended up paying £330.. still extortionate for a one time wear, I know!).

Black Rhinestone Fishnet Crossover Maxi Dress

Rhinestone-studded fishnet lends this dress its starry, sculpted feel, while an artful wrapped bodice and flared skirt work to flatter your form. Enhance its sparkle with our statement earrings.

It’s not something I would personally wear to a wedding and it’s not a dress I would imagine you would get a lot of wear out of so for that reason I voted to return.

That said, if you love it and can afford the big spend for one occasion then go for it.

stillavid · 03/06/2025 19:01

If you can afford it and feel amazing in it then keep it and just sell afterwards.

Kangarude · 03/06/2025 19:04

It’s not what I would wear for a wedding to be honest. I would avoid black and rhinestones, however, if you like it and can afford it - go for it

Newbie8918 · 03/06/2025 19:05

Oh WOW! Do it do it do it! only you can advise yourself on dress code. My wedding was quite formal/black tie so this would fit perfectly.

If you don’t feel you’ll wear it much afterwards, I’ve sold and purchased lots of self portrait online before. It’s easy to sell on.

Britpopbaby · 03/06/2025 19:10

Can you find it on a rental platform so that you get to wear the dress but send it back after the event?

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:12

Thanks all. That is very true re selling it on after. I haven’t worn black to a wedding before either, but it’s an arab wedding and a lot of guests will be wearing quite long, floor length gowns (a lot wearing black gowns), almost like prom!

I think it's the sort of dress you need to be tall and willowy to carry it off . If you are go for it !

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:13

@Britpopbaby ah I did have a look into this but couldn’t find it - there was one similar but I didn’t quite like it enough. Annoying!

Is the cutout bit appropriate for an Arab wedding?

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:15

The only other issue is that not many people i’ve shown actually like it! I know that shouldn’t bother me, as long as I like it.. but it does make you re think!

I love it but I just don’t think it’s wedding like.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 03/06/2025 19:15

You think it is stunning, and I agree.
I guess you have actually bought it ?
don't return it.

If afterwards you sell it or whatever - fine
but do keep it and wear it to/for the wedding

CurlewKate · 03/06/2025 19:16

Do you look amazing in it? Then go for it!

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:19

@MiddleAgedDread I think so, because the dress is black it really doesn’t reveal much at all. Guests at SIL’s wedding (another arab wedding) were wearing all sorts of gowns that revealed leg/cleavage, if the arms weren’t covered maybe but not concerned about the tummy area with the mesh part being black.

@Britpopbaby thank you for those links - will check them out!

Need a picture of you in it to decide!

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:23

I did end up buying it, it’s amazing! Just a LOT to pay… I never spend like this so don’t really know what came over me.

It’s annoying that I can’t think of another occasion where I would be able to wear it.

I think it’s glorious! Very suitable for an Arab wedding where the ladies tend to be full glam. If you feel amazing in it, keep it.

Luanaa · 03/06/2025 19:26

@YesThatsATurdOnTheRug haha I will try to get one tomorrow!

@Luanaa you only live once so good for you. The other dresses are gorgeous in their catalogue also especially the grey one in that line up! I’m sure also you probably could wear it again at a charity or NYE ball or party 🙂

I can! You need to go on a traditional cruise line like Cunard. Their formal nights are where you see everyone in their finery. It’s like stepping back into another time.

notsureonthisone · 03/06/2025 19:42

The dress is PERFECT for an Arab wedding!

Sassybooklover · 03/06/2025 19:44

I personally think it's beautiful. If the dress fits within the framework for an Arab wedding, then wear it!! I'm too short for such dresses unfortunately!

It’s hideous and not at all appropriate for an Arab wedding.
