Bleached white blonde hair

I recently bleached my hair (because I was sick of the greys) and fairly easily achieved a white blonde. Except, it's too white and due to my age, just looks like old lady white hair rather than blonde.

Are there toners or dye that I can use to make it a bit less white and a bit more blonde looking? I don't want it to be too yellowy but I'd like it to look a bit more intentionally blonde.

All the blonde dyes I've look at are lifting colours and the last thing it needs is to go even lighter! I mean, natural blondes must use non-bleaching hair dyes right?

I like the Bleach London stuff, Boots and Superdrug have it along with the Shrine stuff my hairdresser recommended for changing things slightly.

Do you have any idea of what colour to go for? I guess anything purple / blue is out because it'll accentuate the whiteness (or look like an old lady blue rinse 😂).

Personally I'd go to a hairdresser to fix this. It could all go horribly wrong and you'll end up looking like a cauliflower.

Hahaha. No, I won't pay hairdresser prices (£125 for colour). I'll just get it all cut off if it goes too badly wrong. Luckily I'm not too vain and it's only hair.

@TheAmusedQuail can I ask what did you use to get white blonde, I have some silver greys in my hair I'd like to bleach white.

My hairdresser told me what to buy. Wella Blondor Multi Blonde, dust-free powder beach lightener and Wella Welloxon Perfect 6% vol creme developer.

She also told me to leave it for 45 minutes, which I did. Which probably explains why it's white now LOL. I had to redo bits twice where they were either yellow or I'd missed bits.

It definitely worked better than last time I DIY lightened it though.

Sorry @TheAmusedQuaili use the purple tones as I like it more grey/white! I’m not naturally grey yet so in a wee while I might be looking to add a bit more of the warmer tones. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the toners though, a bit of Head & Shoulders would sort you out if you didn’t like it.

Yeah, the actual colour is OK. On a 30 year old, it'd be good. Ashy platinum blond. But at my age, it just looks old lady white!

Could you ask her again?

I’ve been pleased with the shades eq range I’ve done myself at home. However I’m much much darker than you, so can’t recommend a shade personally.

But have a look at their shade chart. It lists it with the underlying tone.

If your hair is white now, with absolutely no yellow pigments, i would think you’d be ok for their level 10 shades. If you are avoiding the ones with blue/violet undertones that will give a super ashy tone then maybe try the 010N delicate natural? That’s very neutral? Or they have two others that have some gold in there? The 010GI or 010VG with gold iridescent or violet gold. Both look very pretty!

If it were me, I'd go to a hairdressing supply shop, I happen to have a great retail outlet near me (Sally Beauty) and ask what shade of toner would suit. I love toners personally - I have a Tresemme one for brown hair that gives me a more ash tone. One time when I went blonde I hated the colour as it was too yellow, and the hairdresser put in an ash toner which worked really well. A tube lasted me for several weeks & I just left it in after shampooing for about 5-10 minutes. You could also check in with a hairdresser as chances are they sell toners & will better advise which one would add a little yellow. A toner at the hairdressers should be under £20.

dollyblue01 · 31/05/2025 13:59

You need a toner but would need to find out from your hairdresser which one.

dollyblue01 · 31/05/2025 14:00

I always have to have one , but the hairdressing supply shop may be a shout.

TheAmusedQuail · 02/06/2025 08:58

I used a Shrine toner (mix it with conditioner) last night. It's definitely blonde now, but a sort of peachy blonde which I'm not fond of, so I'm going to try purple shampoo when I wash it, to see if the peachy tone reduces a little bit.

But definitely NOT white / grey anymore! Thanks for the suggestion.

I have the shrine stuff in purple sitting in my cabinet for 2 years, I dare not use it , don't want purple hair, I use purple shampoo which helps with the slightly golden bits, but it do wash out, was wondering weather to try the shrine in a different colour like white, but would it just lighting the greys and bleach, as I don't want all over white, I'm a dark blonde almost brown .
